Elementary Streams
These are basically video and audio streams that are not multiplexed together as one file. An MPEG-2 elementary stream usual has the extension .M2V. If you are authoring a DVD, most authoring programs need you to demultiplex any Program streams to Elementary streams before the DVD is authored.
