Time To Start Editing

Before you go any further, I need to explain a couple of things about how the rest of the guide is worded. Technically, items aren't actually removed in DRM, they're just replaced with dummy titles or menus so that any commands associated with them can still be processed. This preserves the basic structure of the DVD, and ensures that it will still play.

If you see a reference to removing an item, this is what it really means. For most people the distinction isn't important, but if you're trying to understand the process, that's what's happening.

Going Straight To The Main Menu

Since you already know that the FBI warning, Movie Rating, animated studio logo screen, and two previews play before the main menu, you already have a starting point. Now you need to figure out where these things are so you can remove them.

Since the VMG (Video Manager) has several menus in it, at least some of that is probably there. It's unlikely that the two previews are there, because the VMG can only hold menus, and previews are rarely authored as menus.

Highlight Video Manager in the DVD Tree and you'll see that there are several blocks shown in the Blocks List. Highlight each block and preview it by moving the slider on the Block Preview, and you'll see that these contain the studio logo, movie rating, and FBI warning menus, as well as some filler blocks with plain black screens (they're not blank, just plain black with no movement).

If you wanted to remove only some of these menus, you could right-click on each one you wanted to remove and select Hide Block. Since you want to get rid of all of them, it's easier to go back to the DVD Tree, right-click on VMG, and select Hide All Blocks.

Now you need to find the two previews. Select each Video Title Set, one at a time, and preview each block. When you do this you'll find the first preview (Hellboy) in VTS 14 and the second (Resident Evil: Apocalypse) in VTS 17. Each of these Title Sets has only a single preview and another filler block that's just a black screen. But wait - you still need to keep previewing, and when you're done you'll know why. The last VTS also has the previews (both of them in a single VTS this time) so you have to figure out which ones to remove. Since you've looked at all the other previews on the disc, you should have noticed that this is the only VTS that has more than one. Since the only VTS with more than one preview just happens to have the ones that play before the main menu, it's a very good bet that they're the ones you want to remove. In this case I can tell you for sure that this is the case, but if you're not comfortable making your decision based on that, you can always remove them and then export the project as a new DVD to test. The directions for that will be later in the guide, so I won't go into detail here. Remove them by right-clicking on Video Title Set 21 in the DVD Tree and selecting Hide All Blocks. If you expand the VTS, you'll see that the only menu is another filler block. Since the filler block is only .03MB, it doesn't really save you any space to remove it. Before you go any further you should save the project. You need to be careful of when you save, because once you've hidden a block and saved the project you can't restore it, but in this case, we're removing things we know we don't want, so saving is a good idea.

Trim The Movie

Before you start removing extras (and maybe menus) it's a good idea to see if there's anything you don't need in the actual movie. Looking at the size of each VTS, you should be able to tell that Video Title Set 3 has the movie. That doesn't mean there aren't other titles there as well, but since it's the only one bigger than 1GB, it has to at least have the movie. Highlighting this VTS in the DVD Tree, and looking through the blocks in the Blocks List, you'll see that it only has the movie. However, you'll also see that there are two blocks at the beginning of the movie with studio screens, and the movie doesn't actually start until the third block. You have to be careful about removing blocks like these, because the second one might actually be where the music for the movie starts. You can find out for sure by either playing the movie in your DVD player (or with a software player) or to go back to DVD Shrink and preview it there. When you do that, you'll find that the second block is, in fact, where the movie's music starts, so you won't want to remove it. To remove the first block, simply right-click on it in the Blocks List and select Hide Block. I recommend saving the project again at this point.

The Rest Of The Disc

Now you need to find the two previews. Select each Video Title Set, one at a time, and preview each block. When you do this you'll find the first preview (Hellboy) in VTS 14 and the second (Resident Evil: Apocalypse) in VTS 17. Each of these Title Sets has only a single preview and another filler block that's just a black screen. But wait - you still need to keep previewing, and when you're done you'll know why. The last VTS also has the previews (both of them in a single VTS this time) so you have to figure out which ones to remove.
