Ripping MPEG files from CDs

You have two options here, VCDEasy and VCDgear, we'll work with VCDEasy first. Basically we will be extracting MPEG files from the SVCD discs i this step. SVCD's generally come on multiple discs for one movie, so repeat this step for each CD you have to rip. Remember, that you cannot store more than 4.36GB on a DVDR.

Ripping with VCDEasy

When you first open VCDEasy, it looks a bit strange. But all we are going to be doing here is converting a DAT file to an MPEG file. Click Tools --> MPEG Tools. At the end of the program now is a program called CDXA2MPEG (see pic with this text). In the DAT field, browse to your CD and go to the MPEG2 folder. Select AVSEQ01.mpg and click Open. Now in the MPEG file field, select somewhere to save an MPEG file. Now click Convert and after a couple of minutes the file will have been ripped to your HDD. In some cases, there will be more than one file in the MPEG2 folder on the CD. Check these files with DVD software to make sure you are ripping the right files. If multiple files are the same movie, then rip them all, we will be merging them later. Remember to repeat this method for all the CDs from each movie.

Ripping with VCDGear

Some people prefer to rip with VCDGear, so to stop flaming lamers I decided to show how to rip with it too. First select dat -> mpeg conversion. Whether or not you tick Fix MPEG Errors is up to you, I always select it to be safe. Now click the load button and browse to the MPEG2 folder on CD. You wont be able to see the file because it's extension is .mpg so you will have to change File Type to All files. Select AVSEQ01.mpg file and click open. The program will now ask for a location to save an MPEG file. When you have that done, click the start button. There may be more than one file in the MPEG2 folder. Check the files with a Software DVD player to make sure you rip the right files. If multiple files need to be ripped, then rip them all with the same method, we will be merging them again later. Use the same method to extract all the MPEG's from all CDs you need to extract from but remember, a DVDR will hold only up to 4.36GB of data. As I said earlier that's a maximum of five full CD's. If this seems confusing just read over it again and you will probably understand it better this time around.

After Ripping

The next step you have to take now is to merge the MPEG files with MPEG-VCR or TMPGEnc. However, the next part of this guide is mounting CDs onto Virtual CD Drives with Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120%. If you have just ripped from CDs then you don't need to read the next part, unless of course you have another movie on your HDD in Image files which is very possible. If you only have the movies on CDs and just used one of the methods about to rip the MPEG files then go right ahead to the merging part.
