Split with DVDXGold

This section will show you how to use DVDXGold to split your DVD-9 into 2 DVDR's.

DVDXGold Main Window

This is the main DVDXGold window. It gives three options, Backup DVD, Settings and X Software. The X Software button will launch your default browser and go to the X Software homepage. Settings allows you to change some simple settings (we will see in a moment) and Backup DVD will start the DVD backup process. First however, we will take a quick look at the changeable settings.

DVDXGold Settings

The settings are very simple. First there is Select DVD Burner, which allows you to select the program's default DVD burner. It will only list DVD Burners, no other drives. Temporary allows you to specify a temporary folder that will be used to store files in the backup process. Please make sure there is enough hard disk space for these files (9.4GB is recommended by X Software). You now have two extra options, Suspend Screensaver While Copying A DVD and Play Sounds when Reading and Writing is Completed. You should definitely keep both selected, as Screensavers could slow down the backup process and it's always useful to have a noise played when the process is completed. Now that you have configured your settings, click Backup DVD.

From Folder or From DVD Drive?

As mentioned at the start of the guide, some DVD's are protected with CSS. For this reason you may have had to rip your DVD to your Hard Disk Drive with DVD Decrypter. If you didn't then you can still rip from an unprotected DVD with DVDXGold. Wait a few seconds and it should read the DVD for you. If you ripped the DVD to a folder, use the Browse button to locate that folder. If you get a CSS message and you already ripped your DVD to the Hard Disc, then remove the DVD from your DVD drive and click Backup DVD again, then click Browse. If you get the CSS message and you haven't already ripped to the Hard Disk, then go back to the last page and rip your DVD first.

Select Titles to Keep

Even though you will be splitting the DVD into 2 DVD-R's, you can still pick and choose whichever titles you want. You can use the Preview Video button on the right to watch any selected title. Tick the tickbox beside any of the TitleSets. You will notice the Compression button will probably become clickable when you have selected them all. If it doesn't then you have a DVD-5 and can go straight to Write DVD.

Since we won't be compressing, just splitting, untick the Use Compression checkbox and you will see the Compression button changing to Splitting. When you have selected the Titles you want to keep, click the Next button to decide which titles will be on which disc.

The Splitting Window

As you can see you can decide what titles will appear on which disc. You can use the Disc 1 and Disc 2 buttons while a title is selected to move Titles. As you can see, some titles will appear in both, like TitleSet1 in the pic. This happens because TitleSet1 is over the size of the DVD-R and will have to be split onto both discs. When you changed anything you want here, click the Next button to begin the Process.

Write DVD

Firstly, the program will read your DVD, then begin writing it to your blank media. If your blank media is re-writable and already has data on it, it will be formatted before the writing process begins. The time this process will take, depends on the speed of your computer and the speed of your DVD burner. When it finishes with the first disc, you will have to enter a second blank disc.

Finally

This guide should have shown you how to quickly backup your DVD-9 movies to 2 DVDR's using DVDXGold. If you have any problems or questions, please visit our Discussion Forums and ask them there.
