BREIN claims to have shut down Demonoid

28 June 2007 14:43 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 52 comments

BREIN claims to have shut down Demonoid BREIN, the Dutch copyright protection agency that has gone on a crusade to rid the Netherlands of "illegal" torrent sites, has claimed that they have taken down Demonoid, a private tracker that has grown in popularity the past few years.

Last week, BREIN got another victory when the site Everlasting.nu was forced to close down and the owner's personal details sent to the group. Apparently, BREIN was not happy enough and demanded that the hosting company, LeaseWeb, shut down Demonoid as well.

Users trying to log in yesterday could not as Demonoid was offline, and BREIN was quick to claim victory.

"This outcome demonstrates that the content on offer on large international p2p-sites such as Demonoid is mostly illegal. These kind of sites make use of content supplied by its customers",
says BREIN director Tim Kuik. "Sites like these do take the responsibility to refuse illegal pornographic material, but they do not care about the offer of evidently infringing content. That carelessness is calculated because they know that is exactly the content their users want. Many of such sites are hosted in the Netherlands and mainly by Leaseweb. Leaseweb is seen as a safe harbour for these sites. That has to come to an end. We have shown repeatedly that such sites are illegal under Dutch law and jurisprudence. We will continue to do so until none are left."

Demonoid however, give a different reason for the site being offline.

"We had a system problem which will force us to restore everything from backup,"
a post on Demonoid.com reads. "The disks are pretty much empty right now and until we are able to upload the backup and set up everything up, we have to close down. We'll be back as soon as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience."

Demonoid posted another message this morning that once again said the downtime was temporary and that BREIN had nothing to do with it.

"We were planning on returning online in the next few hours - probably tomorrow afternoon. But due some recent events, and following the advice of a lot of you, we will make a few more changes that might take a few days longer. As always, thanks for you continued support and patience. For the ones wondering, the timing of the downtime was coincidental."

These messages have lead many to believe that Demonoid is switching hosting companies but BREIN still feels that LeaseWeb will be held responsible.
"If it turns out that Leaseweb does not have reliable information about its clients' identity then it attracts the liability for such damages."

UPDATE: Seems Demonoid is back up, just as they promised.

I am going a little nuts without howard tv... can someone pm me with a site I can get the new episodes now that the demon is down?

I thought Demonoid was a great site.

As with most sites everything is catigorized, applications/movies ect....but the best thing I thought was the comments from the members. Before you downloaded a movie, you could check the comments just to make sure the the movie was in sync and so on.

If you downloaded or were going to dl an application, you can read the comments to make sure it worked propperly or leave a comment if it didn't work propperly for you.

Just my opinion, but I thought it was/is an excellent site and hopefully it's back up and running soon.

Ok guys, lets keep this little flame war to a minimum please :)

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and Stang has his. I happen to agree with him for many reasons.
    1. There is NO privacy at that site.
    2. Demonoid links can be found on any public tracker.
    3. Speeds are slow :P
    4. Variety is decent at best.

    @Weirdname,
He made those abbreviations because the sites are so private that they send spiders out to find anyone who writes their names in public forums, then they ban them from the site. TRUE story.

And yes, I agree Stang has a nice sig, i wonder who made it :P
WierdName (Senior Member) 29 June 2007 15:11 Send private message to this user
Lemme guess... you?(EDIT- about who made the sig)
And can I at least get a PM about the names of those, or at least one of those, sites? Even if the PMs can be tracked, they could just split the name up or put dashes between words or whatever. Also, what about ISOhunt? I use it when I can't find something on demonoid.

Isohunt is just another public tracker, similar to demonoid. Dvd is 100% right, he knows very well that naming those sites is forbidden, and will result in an instant ban when (and trust me, you will get caught) admin from one of the sites finds out you are spamming their site.

Bottom line is, to each their own. I have listed reasons why I feel the tracker sucks, take it or leave it. You guys can continue to use trackers such as demonoid, I prefer to use much more private and secure sites (for non copyrighted material of course!!).

    @Dvd

Stop taking credit for the awesome sig I MADE!!!! :P Hahahaa im sure I will hear about that one later on :/

It is within the forum rules ddp, i swear!! :P

Well can someone at least give me a good hint? I am a good uploader as I have at least a 3 ratio. Anyone, please?

Doesnt expecting the unexpected make the unexpected expected and therefore mean your expecting the expected which was the unexpected until you expected it?

It's the condescending attitude that you project, stang. You are entitled to your opinion but don't belittle people because of theirs... Also, don't tell me how to use quotes, thats the pot calling the kettle black. :P Now I offer you my peace pipe.

This is apalling, a flame war? There has been very little meaningful conversation going on in the last few days. I'm sorry for expressing my opinion and I didnt realize it would be such a problem, I request this be shut down, or at least have all offensive posts such as "The Dutch are cheese fuckers" removed. And furthermore, SVTSTAND we all expect more from you as an addict please dont be getting into meaningless fights wih noobies.

Ok, that doesn't need to be there.

Its SVTstang, with a G. As for getting in fights with newbies, no offense SVT but I kinda agree. The newbs seem to be fanboys so the only winner of the inevitable fight will be the one that doesn't get banned.

    List of private trackers.
It is pointless to try and keep these things hidden.
    I prefer Demonoid or thepiratebay.

quote]LOL look a little demonoid fanboy! "Put up or shut up"....that doesnt even make sense in this scenario! Ok, cause obviously you are not too intelligent, here are better trackers.

    TL
    ScT
    scn
    ftn
    A-L

Have fun figuring out what some of those are. And yes they are all real trackers....

    @Dvdback

Can you believe how some of these people stand up for that POS? Kind of funny![/quote]Actually that line..."for this scenario"...(whatever that means) makes perfect sense...sorry that it confused you so. If you complain about something, give a replacement...simple...but if you get confused easily..then its ok. We understand your needs.

Joshewah is correct... If something works for someone, then they are happy. Let it be. State your opionion and don't brow-beat those who disagree. There are some of us that don't have all the time in the world to research every little detail. If you do, then good for you...takes up all that time that you could be trying something important....like dating perhaps.

He didn't say anything about girls. Although you should take up dating instead of starting the next business their acne covered face will be working at :D
    Just kidding... sorta

Not that i use bit torrent anyway bit i think your right mate, its moved off leaseweb and onto a company called teleglobe.net who appear to be in Montreal.

I can smell a large rotten fish there, as the sites owner wont even comment on brein let alone given a good reason for the down time or the move from hosting company.

    I would keep well away.

Just noticed myself that it is back up, but like the lot of you, i doubt i will use it again, only because it seems a little skeptical about what is going on. kind of fishy like everyone's been talking about.

but it was good when i used it, found stuff i couldn't locate elsewhere, but oh well, hopefully all info will come to light.

I don't understand the negative attitudes towards Demonoid. It's a great clean bittorrent site that offers a lot of special content that other sites like mininova or the pirate bay don't. Especially their comic section is superior to everything else I've seen.

Also, the negative attitude towards the Dutch is easy to understand. I live in Holland, so I am Dutch, but the people here are real bastards. They have one of the biggest free societies in the world, but they simply can't handle it. All they do is use and abuse. They are spoiled and decadent, but in the end it will bite them/us in the ass.
