You should just spend the extra $12.00 to buy a 60GB PS3 while they're on sale. You might only get 5 DVDs but you get a lot more features(eg. playing games, using it as a computer[Linux], ect.)

You could, and this could be part of Sony's plan.

However, with the life expectancy of a blue laser (I think its something like 3-5 years right?) I wouldn't buy a PS3 to watch movies. Occasional movie watching maybe, but if your buying it to watch movies I would just go with the standalone.

Free movies are always good and could help the Blu-Ray camp greatly. But, I wouldn't be surprised to see HD DVD's camp do something similar if Blu Ray starts getting a "real" lead over it due to this promotion.

The war is just beginning and I don't think a "Winner" will be drawn within the next 3 years, if ever. Something else may come along and wipe Blu-Ray and HD DVD off the map before either one gets a real steady foothold above the other.

I have a feeling that Blu-Ray will win the war because both single and dual layer discs have a higher capacity then HD-DVDs, which only means more space for uncompressed video which in the end means a higher quality...

And I've never heard of that Blu-Ray laser life expectancy... I think if it was from only 3 to 5 years, they would be a lot cheaper.

there are a few deals going around for both formats. if you buy a ps3 from amazon you get a free bd remote and 1 free movie + 5 free movies from the promo.

on the 22nd, i believe, toshiba is releasing an hd-dvd player for 99$ for one week only that will come with 3 free movies.

edit: the toshiba deal is actually a limited promotion only to those attending some expo in las vegas. ridiculous.

I am surprised Walmart isnt trying to offer their own brand as they always do with stuff.

they cant the chinese HD-DVD players they ordered aren't ready. maybe they are trying to get rid of BD players to free up room.

me neither. I think it would be pretty dumb. Isnt the HD-DVD also using a blue laser? so that would mean that both the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players would be dead in 3-5 years.

This format war is looking like it won't have a winner. Space available on disc is always great but money rules and the format that can shell out their hardware for less will end up appealing to more consumers. Looks like HD-DVD will be reaching the sub 200 player first.

If you read the update for today in that blog entry, it says that this is bogus and a poor attempt to get people to sign up for the event.

LOL... my thought exactly... I already have a Blu-Ray player... game console, media center, browser, among other features... its called a PS3!!

These are crapp movies and i would not invest in the player for that sort of deal.

Blu Ray could be the clear cut winner if they would just bite the bullet and sell the player for $200 or less. The increased sales will more than make up for the perceived loss of profit.

It worked for VHS all those years ago.
