R.I.P 60GB PlayStation 3

30 August 2007 13:57 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 39 comments

R.I.P 60GB PlayStation 3 Last month, Sony announced they were killing off their 20GB model of the PlayStation 3 and dropping the price on the 60GB model. At the same point, Sony introduced an 80GB model for $599 USD which included Motorstorm the game.

The price cut ended up giving Sony a sales spike on the console, but reports and rumors surfaced that the 60GB model was being discontinued and the end of the road has finally come for the 60GB model

Sony has stated that all inventory for the unit is now either on route to retail shelves or already sitting there. "We no longer have any inventory in SCEA warehouses. All inventory has been purchased and shipped to retailers," said SCEA communications officer Dave Karraker.

"We don't have visibility as to if that is on their store shelves or in their warehouses at this time. However, based on inventory reports from our retailers, there is ample supply still left in the channel."

Once the remaining stock finishes up that will be the end of the model and leave the 80GB unit as the only remaining PS3. At that point, Sony should have a dilemma seeing as how the price drop on previous models helped boost sales so much. We wont know until that day hits however. "We won't be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated," said a Sony representative.

Apparently all of the haters here haven't actually played any of the remarkable titles. MotorStorm, Resistance, Ridge Racer. Just wait till GTA, Metal Gear Solid, and Grand turismo come out. Then check the consol war status.

    is bad

the little 499 reprieve was temporary as everyone can see
so sony get smart and keep it 499 or lower. just cause u put in
a hard drive thats still as cheap as the one u replaced it with doesn't mean u can charge 100 bones for it extra
the 60 and GB units for for 50-90$ so its only over charging 30-60 which is not bad,the problem is their mindset on selling this beast.

NOT BAD??? Sorry, but it IS bad!

They still want you to pay higher and higher prices for this thing.

They drop the price on one model, discontinue that one... and then keep it high on another that they keep selling...that's Sony!

They are making more stupid mistakes with this console everyday... when if they priced it reasonably, they COULD have had the market share, but they think they are still on top when in fact Wii is tromping BOTH Xbox 360 and PS3 in sales!

The next year and a half should be good for $ony and Microshaft. Halo 3 is sure to sell some xbox 720's. GTA4, Warhawk, Socom, Lair, etc will surely get the rest of those dust gathering boxes on the shelves. Both companies need to realize it has become a right now society. Launch titles have got to be decent not the fecal matter that has been served up lately. Halo3 or gta4 ready at launch would have set new sales records.

It's so simple....lower price = more sales. Wasn't this last price drop any indication to them? More console sales, means more game sales. Even though we are still waiting on some bigger titles, the few that are out there now will get purchased.

you forget the PS3 is 300-500+ more costly than the 360(wich is about 500-700 to make),hell MS is worse by giving faulty hardware and a 100$ 20GB HDD.

Also there is a bit of give and take with console prices by make losses in the short run you may not make them back, sony has a year or 18 months to lower the price to a better range if they fail to do it the PS3 is toast.

Don't get me wrong the PS3 is doing nearly everything wrong and the 360 is far from perfect as well and the WII needs more polish.

The trouble with sony they are putting off the losses that will come with a real price break, they already incrued 3 billion might have 2 more coming up, but right now they do not need a price break on it because theres no games on it they need to take this to the wire and wait till MGS and FF are out then do a 150$ price drop.

PS3 compatibility dropped about 30% when they removed the chip but it also added filtering and other smoothing options, kinda wish they would add save states and other things to make it worth while, its better than the loss of REAL BWC on the 360, however sony started and proved to the world solid BWC is a great thing, with out it you are merely 2nd thus why the WII is kicking their asses.
I really wish nintendo would build a GBA and DS player for it.

Time to go to the drawing board, how about an 100Gb for $599 and lower the 80Gb to $499?

the HDD is not a issue since you can plop any notebook/laptop sata drive into it, the trouble comes with the whole things price, making a 2nd version just adds production costs ,they need to get the PS3 to 450 and leave it there,at 450 its at the best price point the monolithic beast can get.

I was being a little sarcastic about the way sony is marketing and trying to make us believe that we got a good deal of an overpriced console.

How about they really mess with our heads......release a 300GB version bundled with every accessory for $1,200. That'll make the $599 version seem like a sweet deal :-P

But the DC was popular and sega had to back out because they screwed up to much,(btw anyone have any articles over the real cause of sega backing out?)

Anyway Sony is caught in a rock and a hard place, I think so far they do not need a price drop because their main titles are not out, by staying the course they can force a good amount of consoles to the used market and expand their market share lil by lil with the 60GB liquidation and the such, they can nudge market share and control losses incred getting the beast the market, however they will need to lower the price to under 500 to get it in homes in any real worth while numbers..

Sony has enough cash flow to let the PS3 become the 3rd wheel this go around the question is will their ego let them.

But define popular...apparently it didn't meet sales expectations...it had to compete with the PS2...read the wiki

In some areas time will tell about the PS3...right now they are dropping the ball, compared to M$ and Nintendo...and in some ways M$ has dropped the ball, but phasing out different priced models is not one of them.

It was a solid system and sega could well have toughed it out they let it live in japan even after they stopped production, the DC and well sega itself had more issues that just not meeting expectations a lot of arrogance and ego played a hand in destroying them.

    However
