Well i think this is very good for those that soley want the PS3 just to play PS3 games and are new comers.
Just curious, but does anybody actually use the multi-memory card slot? and wat would be the optimal purpose for it?
Unfortunately for me, I have many PS2 games and i think my PS2 mite be dying so i guess this new model wouldnt be it for me.

if ffiv goes multi i won't even bother but by the time that is released the ps3 will drop down to £200 or even lower at the current rate of price cuts!

Can sum1 explain please: im sure i read that backwards capability was software based? how does not installing software cut costs?

I agree the multi card slot is not necessary. That was part of the reason why I was content with the now defunct PS3 20. The only beef I had with that is that it wasn't wireless. But i bought the linksys game adapter and that was that. My girl bought be a 120 GB HDD so I was happy all around.
These price cuts are great though. I didn't buy the PS3 to play PS2 or PS1 games so the backwards compatibility wouldn't bother me with these new models.

£299? that's a bargain. I'm not bothered about backwards compatibility, i have a ps2, in fact i have a two.
If it plays ps3 games and bluray in full hd then that's all i want tbh.

Why no ps2 compatibility
the compatibility was emulated
why not do it again?

british £ being worth more than US $ means the price needs to drop a bit more.

The underwhelmingly tepid reaction to this announcement speaks volumes.
Since when was £299 a bargain!?
That's the same $600 it was launched at in the USA last year and with a shed-load of the original capability removed.
Some 'bargain'.
Some folks just can't wait to bend over, smile and ask for more, huh?

Most of Sony Fan base has a PS2 so that mean its worth keeping around for a little bit longer. After GOD of War 2 released there wasn't going to be many big titles coming to the PS2.
Its good to see that the UK is getting there long over due price cut & not being bundled to death from both sides( Sony & M$)This is really huge because now Sony can say they have a console that is cheaper than Microsoft this should really get units moving this Holiday season on the console side & Blu-Ray.This will give a boost to the huge PS2 fan base that haven't got a Nex-gen system (which is a of lot people) reason to buy a PS3 now.Now Sony got to focus more on getting games out & on time.

yeah, but an xbox360 elite is £299, so they cost the same, only a ps3 has blu ray.
How big is your shed? 3 things is not a shed load.
And if you are going to compare it to dollars etc, it's £125 off, so that makes it $250 dollars off the original price

does this mean that you will lose the ability to up-scale ps2 titles now?

- I could care less about the XBox 360 elite.
Originally posted by DjDanio: How big is your shed? 3 things is not a shed load.
- The point is it is significantly lower in spec than the original 60gb PS3 released 1 year ago.

- No.
The original UK price was a laughably outrageous £425/$850.
It's now just an over-priced £299/$600.
The higher spec'd original US machine was $600 1 year ago in the USA, defend them all you like but you can wriggle out of the facts.
Bargain my a$$.

ok hughjars or w.e you call yourself.you have no life.you copy paste the same thing in every ps3 thread.i just saw the latest one and you wrote the same thing.and you always respond to everyone else's comments trying to make others look like jackasses and trying to make yourself look good.
get off microsoft's d**k honestly.atleast the ps3 doesnt break once every year as a "toast" like microsoft does for their customers.i personally cant wait for mine to get redlights error.i love my ps3 way more than my elite.thats why you dont see elite in my name.
hughjars here's a tip:everything that you say here, save it for the dinner table cuz nobody likes to listen to your ignorant crap in the ps3 news, fanboy!

How do you pronounce your name? is it huge arse?
Ultimately i don't care what you say.
there is a price drop and it does pretty much the same as an elite, and costs the same.
hence, by comparison to other similar products on the market, it is a good deal because it comes with a blu ray drive and plays games.

Nevermind, better luck trying to 'big up' Sony/PS3/Blu-ray without challenge next time, eh?
Your blinkered devotion is genuinely hilarious.

the 40gig is a complete backtrack by sony, and a slap in the face of phil harrison and his public relations bs, but a cheaper game machine is what ppl want. £350 ($700) imo is still too expensive when http://www.lik-sang.com/ were going to import ps3's to the uk for £300 at launch before sony destroyed the company so global price fixing could continue. the reason for the high price is because the ps3 is marketed as a next gen media player, not a game machine, so expensive means more in the eyes of the bs makers, but with the cut in b/c and there being very few games on the ps3 and certainly no aaa+ titles yet or this year because of the delays in coding ps3 titles, it is still an expensive "look what i got" keeping up with the Joneses toy with now even less "media hub" bs to drive sales.

PS3: A smokescreen for Blu-ray?
Originally posted by hyperlink: The Guardian interviewed Sony Europe VP Matt Brown and read between the lines to conclude that Sony is propagating the storage format using the PS3 as the Trojan horse to carry the drive that will help win the war against the HD DVD.
"The PS3 is going to help us do the job," says Brown. He explained that by selling the PS3, they bring the number of Blu-ray owners up. That way, even if consumers actually prefer the HD-DVD format, they'll have a Blu-ray drive by default and that gives them a compelling reason to use it and buy Blu-ray discs with games and movies in them.
consume and be sheep ppl. don't read books just play your games, take drugs, drink beer and get stupid!

thats a good one actually!
and btw, atleast sony is always making improvements.maybe microsoft should fix the stupid 3 red rings of death and system overheating.oh yea cant wait for my 360 to go on fire !!!!!
this will def help the sales of the ps3 which is slowly gaining.a yaer ago the wii outsold the ps3 12 to 1 and now it is 4 to 1 so thats a pretty big improvement and this 40gb will help even more.

Naturally not one of the supine fanclub give a seconds thought to the timing of this new model.
Does this new sku coming out now mean that Sony have no immediate solution for profile 1.1 for the PS3?
Is it really accidental that they get it announced and out there, not just in time for Xmas, but in time for the 1.1 deadline?
Some folks are far too busy shouting their blind football-like support (yeah, like whatever Microsoft is doing is the relevant point to consider. FFS, pathetic) to actually engage their brains and give this a little thought.

The PS3 is a console that promises the world and fails to deliver.
All I hear is WAIT for the games,WAIT for developers to get used to the CELL,WAIT for more HD movies,WAIT for a BLU-RAY format win and WAIT for PS3 Home online network.
F##K WAITING and buy yourself something worthwhile.

Quote: In making the 40GB model so cheap, Sony cut a few features. There is no multi-memory card slot, two less USB ports, and no backwards compatibility with PS2 games.
They just lost my money due to this cut backs. I went the other day and looked at the difference between the quality of both the ps3 the xbox and the wii and i found that the Xbox 360 was the best in graphic quality not soo much in controller use however that would just take time to get used to.

First off, I'm glad to see Sony had some sense in the price area. This drop was and is extremely needed. I'm not too fond of the 40GB cutbacks but it's enough for the casual gamer. I would want the 80GB only because it still plays PS2 games.
Secondly, it's unbelievable, to this very day, to see someone say that the X360 has better graphics than the PS3. It's been proven that there is BARELY a difference. Wanting to see which console has better graphics by comparing two different games is pathetic. Compare two of the same game and you'll see there is no standard noticeable difference. You might see a FPS difference (DiRT on 360 has a little worse FPS than on PS3) but that's about it.
Also, games are being delayed on the PS3. I suggest bribery but there's a million other suggestions that could be right or wrong.

Makes you wonder if the prices would be the same as last Xmas if gamers had fallen for Sony's 1st price trick. :)

LOL oh n0ez its the extremely old argument "my system has better grafx than teh y0urs" Pffft. It's the f***ing games that matter dudes! Look at Metroid 3 on Wii. That has some sweeet graphics. Comparing that with some current 360 games, it looks better. Sonic the Hedgehog comes to mind. And PS3, well it could atleast beat Enchanted Arm and Dynasty Warriors: Gundam. So there! Wii graphics are now better than 360 and PS3. hahah
the games, dudes. Remember the games. I don't give a flying **** if one system has better graphics than the other. The games matter. If Assassin's Creed comes out looking like @$$ on one system vs. another, it's because of the programming. But I believe that game will be awesome. So if one system doesn't look as good as the other, trust me, one of the devs will screw up and make that system look good vs. the other on a cross-platform release.
Mario Sunshine + Fire Emblem = >> many PS3 games right now. Games sell systems. Not how many terraflops of graphics/second can be sent by bandwith.
/rant
*i got Folklore mixed up as a 360 game, sorry edited!

Well I'd hate Sony for them to make another price "screw up"... hint hint E3...
That's kinda what I was saying. The Wii is cheap and I assume the game library will be bigger and better by 2010 of both the PS3 and the 360 (maybe even combined). I guess that's why I bought a PS2 over the Xbox. It still has a growing game list which is great! Not crappy games either.

Yeah i think the price drop is good BUT sony should have lowered the price of the 60gb to the 299 price instead of introducing the 40gb model.
To say my thing about some of the childish "ps3 is better than 360 or 360 is better than the ps3" comments, its F****** stupid.
The name given to a person who loves one console over another is "fanboy".
Im a "fanboy" of ALL Consoles.
As it says above.
"David Reeves, the president of Sony Europe noted as well, "The introduction of the new PS3 has been the result of extensive research into the entertainment needs and preferences of the next-generation PS3 owners".
Lousy research in my opinion.
Sorry for that rant just had to get it of my chest.
My comparison to the two consoles.
299 ps3 Blu-ray 40gb hdd 1080p via hdmi.
299 360 HD-Dvd 120gb hdd 1080p via hdmi.
When it comes to blu-ray versus HD-Dvd there is no difference in picture quality they both produce crystal sharp 1080p images.
The only difference between the two is the capacity of data they hold.
