R.I.P 60GB PlayStation 3 model in the UK

6 October 2007 11:34 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 15 comments

R.I.P 60GB PlayStation 3 model in the UK Following yesterday's official announcement by Sony that a 40GB PlayStation 3 would be offered for £299 in the UK, Nick Sharples, director of corporate communications for Sony Europe, said that the 60 GB model would be going the way of its American counterpart, into oblivion.

Just like in North America, the 60GB has stopped being produced and when the current stock is depleted, that is the end of that model in the UK. The 40GB model will then be the only unit available for purchase in the UK. The new model however, lacks a multi-memory card slot and PS2 backwards compatibility which could presumably be an issue for some potential buyers.

"We are looking forwards, not back,"
Nick Sharples said "It was clear when Sony first launched the PS3 in the UK that backwards compatibility as a feature was an issue, it's now becoming less and less important."

When asked how much stock was left, Sharples would not give an exact number but figured there was 2 to 3 months of stock left.

"Anyone who wants to buy a 60GB PS3 for Christmas is not going to have a problem",
he stated.

What is still unclear is whether a new model will replace the 60GB SKU or if the 40GB model will remain as the sole SKU available in the UK.

This will definitely drive up sales. The PS3 uses the HD to store saves. The memory slot refers to the flash-based slots, like CF, SD, and Memory Stick Pro Duo.

at least they are sticking to one sku now, seems pointless that they bothered to make ps2 games up-scaling on the ps3.

No memory card slot? So how do I save? Do I take the memory card and put it in my head to save?

Ummmm dude did you even read the article coz I'm pretty sure a HDD whether it be 40GB or 60GB is mentioned at least once per sentence.

I have the XBOX 360, and would like to get the PS3 but only when the price comes down. Any move to lower the price is a good thing. And I wonder if the PS3 will finally shine next year with better games?

1 year after the US launch they're selling a far lower spec'd version of the PS3 in the UK for the self same £299 (= $600) they were selling the higher spec'd 60gb model for in the USA.

How they must be laughing as the fanclub (desperate to lap up anything served up to them without a hint of critical thought) proclaim this a 'bargain'.

    Too funny.

I have a 360 and a PS3 I would stick with the 360 untill the PS3 comes down in price to like £150 and there are some exclusive games. At the moment everytime I turn my PS3 on I have to update it. And the sony shop is a joke! there is like 7 demos to download. On Xbox live there is 100's of playable demos. Sony are more worried about Blu-ray being the next format than games.

Thanks for the info nptwenty. I had no idea that Sony shop was a joke like that. Maybe I will wait indefinitely until the price is right.
Plus I think Sony likes to make processes confusing just for a laugh. Take the Sony mp3 players that only use their arcos (sic) system for managing music.

Actually the PS store has far more than 7 demo's, but its nowhere near XBL's 100+ demos. I'm not fully sure why the ps3 can't do ps2 games on the 40gb version, the did BC with emulation on the 80gb version why can't the do it with this one. Its a good thing I got a launch 60gb version.

You really don't own a PS3 because if you did you would know that there are far more Demos than 7.Just another Xbot trying to down play the good moves Sony is making now.
