Samsung drops plans for mid-tier Blu-ray player

5 November 2007 18:49 by Rich "vurbal" Fiscus | 20 comments

Samsung drops plans for mid-tier Blu-ray player Samsung has decided to drop plans for a mid-tier Blu-ray standalone that would have been priced somewhere in between the $499 BD-P1400 and $999 BD-UP5000.

"Samsung assessed its product lineup and after discussions with our channel partners, decided to focus on the BD-P1400 and the BD-UP5000 to make its next-generation offerings more efficient," according to a Samsung statement. "As a result, the BD-P2400 was removed from the 2007 holiday lineup."

The BD-UP5000, Samsung's first combination HD DVD and Blu-ray player, should be available to consumers in mid-December, and will be BD profile 1.1 compliant like all players released from this point forward.

    Jeez,

Can someone just Grow some Balls and make an executive decision on what the format will be for Media content for about the next 30 seconds.

The longer they wait to figure this out, everyone is trying to jump on the band wagon and prolong this process. And as with everything, once the decision is made someone will come out and say they are working on such a format that is better and will be out in the next 5 years and then the war begins all over again. What does this lead to?

More waste going into the dump. Do we really need to be able to put 50 gig on a disc and do we really need 1 Terabyte of storage for home use. I just think we need a standard that will last for more than 30 seconds on the market and stop the Waste of materials and time on this constant crap and spend the money of more useful projects.
    Lol, capitalism.

Yeah, that's not gonna happen too soon.

It took 4 or 5 years for Beta to be weeded out of existence, so that VHS could take over.

But I do agree, who needs storage that large on an optical disc?
As far as I'm concerened, the DVD format is just fine.

Because of the ps3 and its price, stand alone players are going to suffer, unless there is a blu-ray player sub £200 very little other than sony hardware will be sold, and the ps3 will destroy itself because of sony's grab at total control.

the problem with trying to control the entire industry is that manufactures and consumers will get a little upset, arrogance is not appreciated!

I am not in favor of either format but this could be a good thing, by focusing money and time on getting the build down to 200$ they could launch a 200ish player in 20 months.

By then most HDVD players will be in the 100-299 range looking forward it could happen, still the longer BR waits to lower prices the more they will wane.

Even if thats so these are liquidation type things the new cheap drives will be a bit more than them as far as I have heard, if hey put more unit lines to 100 range the more power to them, if they do so then it should be interesting to see what BR dose to counter it.

I like how people resort to something related to politics if they cant either understand something or just don't get that I or others are frustrated with something. This was me venting my frustration with all the Format wars and nothing more. Its had nothing to do with any
"Politics" and for one I think Politics is complete crap as well. So I will sit back and wait for you to call that something else with your one liners. Instead try to commenting on the subject at hand and not people!
I do not see as communism and capitalism as being politics, the bloody human sausage making of local and federal goverment now theres politics :P

My point is that some people just don't answer the questions at hand and clout the subject. It was just a view that I expressed and his only response was a one liner.

communism and capitalism are goverment types but not very political unless you start crying the reds are coming,my point besides trying(and failing) to sound cool or listen to myself speak is that, the inner working of the goverment its people and policies are politics its the insane and sublime manner of it that makes it the endless bricking and feuding it is.

communism and capitalism are merely goals set out by the goverment to control overall growth.

capitalism is giving businesses free reign and thus is it a part of how a goverment grows and governs its people.

I am deleting all of my post in this forum for the simple fact that the topic being discussed has nothing to do with this particular forum.
If you want to debate on whether or not Capitalism is apart or effects Politics then send me a Private email. This has nothing to do with the post at hand.
