Sony sells 1.2 million PS3s during holiday season in North America

10 January 2008 1:57 by James "Dela" Delahunty | 22 comments

Sony sells 1.2 million PS3s during holiday season in North America Following a price cut, improved game line-up and availability of a lower priced model, Sony managed to move 1.2 million PS3 units in North America during the crucial holiday shopping season, providing a significant boost for the gaming platform and - Sony claims - the Blu-ray disc format. The PS3 rivals Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii in the multi-billion market for video game content.

The PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld console also had a decent holiday season with 1.4 million units snatched up by consumers. To remind us that the previous generation of gaming is still alive and well, the PlayStation 2 (PS2) was very popular during the holidays in North America also, managing to sell 1.3 million units.

Adding up the figures for the three common PlayStation-branded items; PS2, PS3 and PSP, you get a figure of 3.9 million unit sales in North America during the holiday season for the devices. Last year, the PS3's launch was negatively affected by a high price tag, lack of attractive games and of course, the consumers' fascination with Nintendo Wii and DS Lite.

"The PlayStation brand ended the year in a very strong position and clearly indicates more positive momentum going into 2008," said Jack Tretton, president and chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America. "The strong PS3 sales also further establish Blu-ray's dominant position as the high-definition medium of choice for games and movies."

well good for them i guess. as cost keep coming down and the big games come out 2008 will be their best year yet i think. of course the same could be said for 09 and the year after that but i think their fortunes are turning never the less. they took a heavy punch at first but they manage to get those blu ray diodes in many consoles and made them cheaper because of the manufacturing en masse. what would we be or what would technology be without the early adopters right? ha. this can only help extend blu ray's reach. i wonder for a ps4 if they would use (im assuming they will) blu ray as well. imagine it blu ray and the cell without the high costs. a next gen console looking even better than now (if thats possible or if theres something better than 1080p) and the a.i. being even smarter and so on. hopefully since blu ray will be established by then it wouldnt cost as much. if they learned from their mistakes this gen then they know not to go more than $300-400 max. and imagaine the next step in inovation. we'v already got the eye's card game and everything...wow... man dont pay atention to me, im just daydreaming hehe

    my 2 cents. peace ^_*

It is a news article about Sony's sales, not a comparative sales article.

Wii pushed over 5 million? Even with the shortages? Their strategy is working well for them.

Seems a little late to play too much catch up, but at least they finally got the hint. Lower the price + some decent games = sell more units!

They probably were not concerned with trying to catch up. Just improving from the previous and gaining some more customers. A positive trend this past holiday season is great. It's probably a combination of the price reduction, people buying into blu-ray and people expecting a good year for the exclusives in 2008.

I bought one just for the Blue-Ray capability alone. The loading seems to be quicker on a PS3 than a stand-alone player. Also, if Blue-Ray went under, I would still have a game system. I agree with 7thsinger that they need to make more games. I'm looking forward to Burnout Paradise this month.

LOL nice way to put it zippy, alot nicer than normal.
Anyway, its good to see PS3 is doing well, but how many of those were sold as Blu-ray players alone. It would be an interesting stat i think. I ain't bashin, just curoius. Although I doubt theres anyway to track that.

they wil push 70% or more of PS3 sales as stand alone players, presonaly I think 25-35% is a fair number.

    7thsinger
and it can get worse :P

Microsoft threw its best punch this year with Halo 3, 2008 will be Sony's turn, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Gran Turismo 5 coming out this year (and if we are really really really lucky FF13 and FFvs13). More consoles sold though the better the quality of games will be as there is more money to be made for these companies.

EDIT: And I was one of the 1.4 million people buying a PSP. Needed myself some entertainment for a 13 hour road trip to the relatives. =(
Got the Silver Ratchet version of the PSP along with Hotshots Golf and Final Fantasy 1&2, and boy was it a life saver.

I assure you that if you know who was here writting, he would have said..."the article was incomplete, the 360 sold x more than the ps3 and the wii and ds sold x more than the ps3 and its still firmly in 3d place even with the price drops and all that"...

possibly the best console ever, but when you have only 1 console in the race its going to be great, as exclusives aren't a problem.
