Sony America will focus on current PS3 models

Sony America will focus on current PS3 models Following Sony Japan's decision to drop the 20GB and 60GB models of the PlayStation 3 in favor of the backwards compatibility lacking 40GB unit, Sony America has implied that they have no plans to change their current focus and are satisfied with the models available.
"This morning SCEI made an announcement in reference to Japan no longer shipping the 20GB and 60GB PlayStation 3 configurations. We have already stopped shipping these in the US and have been focused on the 80GB and 40GB configurations which are currently at retail," the company said in a statement.

"As we've said, we will also continue to read and evaluate market trends and communicate with consumers to determine appropriate configurations for each territory."

In North America, the 20GB model retailed in short supply before being dropped. The 60GB was discontinued in favor of the higher capacity 80GB model in July.

I am glad i got the 60GB model. Even though the BWC isnt a issue for me some people take it seriously that the 40GB model doesnt support nothing old and the 80GB does partially. I think if Sony didnt make that decision when they did they wouldnt have had a great holiday season but maybe just a average one.

The biggest problem I have with the 40gb ps3 is the marketing used to sell it. "Now starting at $399," may not sound misleading, but that leaves out the important details. In lieu of a price drop sony introduced a new model with $100 worth of equipment missing, knowing that price was just under the consumer threshold.

I guess you can't blame them for not mentioning lack of features in commercials and the like. I noticed that nowhere in newspaper ads did they mention its lack of bwc, nor did I hear about it on tv in any way. Reading afterdawn and the like is the only way I found out.

What are they gonna do? Make a 5 minute commercial explaining all of the 40GB's faults? lol

I have a 60GB, and I am happy with it's BWC, but I could have gone for the 40GB because once you have the BWC feature you realize that you don't really need it :P

Not unless ur the kind of people that like me traded up their ps2 for a ps3. So all those ps2 games can be played on ps3 and i wouldn't have to worry about that sort of thing.

Some stores allow you to trade in old video games or systems for store credit. He may have not gotten much, but a few $$ off a system that expensive is nice. Now that there is no BWC, people who did that would have to either buy a new slim piece-o-crap paperweight PS2 or buy one used on ebay in order to still play the PS2 games they want to.

heheh

Just some fine print at the bottom of the screen during the regular spot would have been all right with me. It's a matter of principle, especially considering the ad I'm referring to was part of that "largest ever" ad campaign.

Don't ever trade in your stuff unless your going to die if you don't >:(

I had a PS2 slim(boxed and everything, like barely a year old) and like 6 games(all complete with bills inside them too) and a controller and some other stuff and they're like oh no 10 new games only and then we'll take off a couple hundred, so I took the chump change and some extra cash(bastards) and bought a PSP.

That was so cheap, I've downloaded every game I wanted since then and modded my PSP. They gave me like $90! I kept 1 game because they were only going to give me $4 dollars for it, and I payed like $45 for it like 8 months ago(because they already had 3). With all my bandwidth, I think I've recovered >:D

They need to do this because of the fact that the games are going to get better and they require more space even for saving so hence the storage space have to expand and be able to handle the requirements the new games will demand.
