Gates: Xbox 360 will be most reliable console

13 January 2008 20:14 by James "Dela" Delahunty | 58 comments

Gates: Xbox 360 will be most reliable console It is no secret that a large portion of the first shipped Xbox 360 consoles were defective. Microsoft Corp. has admitted to this problem and set aside a mountain of cash to repair or replace defective units for customers. In order to prevent more problems of this nature, Microsoft introduced a revised cooling design with heatpipe and heatsink to cool the GPU and used 56nm chip technology in newer consoles (for CPU).

Bill Gates never really spoke out about the matter until now. Speaking with the BBC, Gates revealed that Microsoft is now determined to make the Xbox 360 console the most reliable gaming hardware for consumers. "Well, we certainly had to apologize to our uses about a number of boxes that had to be replaced," said Gates. "We did that for free for all of those people, we've gotten a lot of positive feedback about the way we handled it."

"We've got incredible reliability on the new work we've done," he continued. "Our commitment is that it will be the most reliable video game box out there. People really love the Xbox because of the content, but we've got to make sure that the hardware never stands in the way of that."

why do ppl don't get pissed of, a company should test a product before selling it , they just dind't care abot they failure rate they wanted to be release it first (Cuz think about it a whole year it's a lot ppl just couldn't wait.)
, that's the main reason of their sales or cuz of xbox live(wich is not free) not cuz it's a great console, give me a break how much time will dvd be able to hold

don't come to me with most reliable speech , not true mr.gates microsoft should have stayed with pc.

plus your new os suxs xp is way better and the only reason ppl use it's cuz it's pre-installed on pc's and regular ppl can't downgrade or just don't want to spend a couple of hundred more on a technician

the xbox 360 had a large dreadful problem but is the best console by far ask anyone who plays on xbox live they will tell you.i got red rings and was upset but i wouldnt trade my xbox360 for a ps3 & wii combined.BILL is still smarter than all you people bashing him and his awesome console everyone seems to forget the ''cant read disc ''problem that everyone had with their PS2 .If your a real hardcore gamer you have and love your XBOX360!!!

Yeah, the PS2 was no walk in the park either. Mine stopped reading most discs and that's why I got a HDD. But then it just stopped working altogether and I got a new one.

But the new one was only $45. So I'm not complaining.
    --

I think it all comes down to the fact that so many 360s have failed and this is practically the first official statement from Gates. I understand that they have been fixing the things for free, but he really should've said something when it started. I don't like that he's basically kissing everyone's ass when people are like "Damn should've bought something else". I mean, he's practically bribing people to stay with their freely fixed or refurbished consoles.

But whatever. At least he finally admitted it.
    --

And by the way, you don't need a certain console to be a hardcore gamer. You just gotta play video games and be good at the ones you do play. I don't need flashy equipment or enhanced graphics to have fun.

yeh i had ps2's,3 old ones and 1 slim model and sony denied fault in it at all.yet if you search the issue in wikipedia you will see it was a widespread issue in which sony was forced via class action lawsuit to fix the issue.keyword forced ms did it cause the problem was out of hand so they manned up. sony has the worst customer service out there , i had called them telling them my ps2 had broken and i had it fixed at starland video which costs me a assload of money and that it had broken again and they should fix it(cant read disc was my systems issue) and so they said ok all i had to do is pay shipping and sent it out to them and they would repair it for free. so i paid the fifty bucks and sent it out to them and 2 weeks later they sent my console back untouched and still broken with a letter stating since my console had been worked on by someone other than them it was no longer their product and they werent going to do anything for me.so all you MS sucks fanboys need to check out your own stomping grounds before you go complaining BOUT ANOTHER COMPANIES PRODUCT...

Microsoft is terrible about shoveling their product out the door, barely ready for mass consumption, then waiting to fix it. They are in such a hurry to make money off the product that nothing gets properly tested. What a sorry state that company is in. Look at Vista: What a nightmare! It's another Millenium Edition piece of trash. MS wanted it out the door so fast, that hardware and software vendors are still trying to catch up. I have several clients that had me take their brand new PCs backward to XP (no samll task, BTW). Same thing with the 360, which is why I won't touch another one. My first exposure was with one of the first ones released which actually drove the laser into discs, scratching them up! Get with the program MS!

You are living in a dream world if you think anyone would fix that. Why would you ever get someone else to fix it, that was your own dumbass fault.

If it's under waranty send it back to them, when someone else opens any sort of electrical equipment it voids the warranty. PS2, CD deck, dvd player etc, the warranty beomes void. The PS2 has a sticker on it ffs.

And think about the consequences if that sort of thing didn't void the warranty, every fool who has messed up a mod install will be trying to get it fixed or replaced.

i didnt do anything they didnt know before i sent it back,is ignorant logic such as yours that keeps sony like customer service in the business. Their console was faulty not my fault and it was the second one that broke so when u see they wont do anything for you 1st time why would i call them immediatley the second time. Think before you speak SON. I spent money to get it fixed and even after that the sony piece of trash broke down again. the only thin im gulity of is being stupid enough to keep buying their product knowing the have the worst customer service in the gaming industry hand down.yet again read before you reply it didnt matter if it was under warranty or not which it was sony was honoring the warranties as pertaining to the mass probelm of disc read errors hence i cited the article in wikipedia about them being sued and losing. Its sad seeing one trying to lash out and be so uniformed!!!The ps2 disc read error was on par with the rrod issue ms is having now their just wasnt the community of online babies out there blogging so it didnt catch as much press. But if the supreme court has got them addressing it clearly it was pretty bad.

Maybe now that the ps3 is becoming a serious contender in the console market MS is finally getting off their ***** to fix the damn 360. I was hopeful when I began hearing rumors about the new falcon chips last summer. I waited to buy a 360 even after they released the new chips, sure enough the halo edition 360's started failing.

The next rumored "fix" (not upgrade) isn't supposed to take place until this September. Hopefully bill's claim to make the 360 the most reliable system isn't more hot air. Maybe MS is actually going to speed up plans for the reliable 360, something like before 2009.

Thats like saying Windows 9X was "reliable" sorry...but until MS overhauls the 360 it will forever be poorly built..........

PS2 side note it had ALOT of lens issues through 3 or 5 revisions, and the Xbox had heating issues.

This is good news for Microsoft, I don't think they will be able to get down to a less than 2% failure rate like the PS3 though.
varnull (Senior Member) 14 January 2008 18:21 Send private message to this user
Where does the 2% failure figure come from??

Now here is an interesting little snippet about how seriously M$ have taken the overheating issue with the 360...

Back in a previous incarnation I was admin on a well known xbox modding site. A member worked out a liquid cooling system which worked and cured his red lights issue. I was contacted by the head of M$ console division asking if it would be OK to contact the member directly to inquire about his mod, and it's effectiveness..

That was back around the March after it was released.. It seems nothing came of it, and I didn't keep track of what happened..

The cooling arrangements changed a little, but it didn't seem to solve the core issue.. which I believe is.. the temperature sensing element buried in the cpu or gpu has a nasty habit of latching up in fault setting...

That would be a 3rd party chip manufacturer problem rather than anything directly within the control of M$. Maybe they should look a little more carefully at where the assemblers source the components.

Still no excuse for the high failure rate that ms originally said was lower than what was being reported over most forums in regards to overheating,it still came down to poor testing & should never have happened, sadly ms are'nt the only ones guilty of poor testing techniques even lawnmower manufacturers but that's another story.

I had no intention of buying a 360 off the bat simply coz i want to wait till it drops in price significantly, especially since i own two xbox 1's which i thought were well constructed right down to the controllers so far they've been reliable as,i'm really disappointed with the crap that the 360 has put people thru,ok so you expect a few teething problems however this heating issue is beyond a joke, worse yet if you send your console back you may not get back the one you bought instead a refurbished one,can you imagine putting your car in for repair & then getting a different one of the same make that someone else had.. wtf..

Let's just hope that they also walk the walk, not just talk the talk this time. But finally some good news on this console too. I propably would have already bought one if the failure rate wasn't so high, but I've also been thinking of getting a PS3 because of some very good exclusives on it, (MGS4, FFXIII, Ratchet & Clank, Drake's Fortune, God of War III) but the price is set really high here in Finland, it was almost 700 € (that's over 1000 USD) for a half year after the release, and atm the lowest price is 399 € (590 USD). Guess I'll wait another year and see where the HD-format war is going, and also wait for a price-drop on the PS3.

the PS3 seems to have a standard 2-5% fail rate, for now thats reasonable, it will take another 2 years to really know how well the PS3 is built but so far so good.

As for MS...come on...there is no excuse for the instanity regarding the hardware issues the 360 had, they have played a good game with consumers offering a top of the line system at a premium yet giving them a system tat has a 50/50 chance of going poof or eating a disc.

I really find myself cluster fcked in this 7th gen of gaming, the new systems are not that really new, the hardware is over priced the games are lacking and seemingly worse than ever do to lack of over sight in gameplay and to top it off they are not offering as much control/interface options as they did.....at one point and time it was a default option in FPS console titles that one could completely remap them completely and now adays its "options? wha? GFYN!".

Yes it is abit late in the game, but its not impossible they could redesign the motherboard to improve airflow. or perhaps they could redesign the case to not have so many holes, this is basic common enginering sense. you see take a tube stick a fan on both sides the flow will more than likely reach the other side take that same tube polk holes in it and the airflow will be greatly reduced. the thing is it has no room for fans. people think great amount of space when they think xbox. but the xbox360 is really compact its worse than a laptop. but just my two cents

    360 is that a circle
    1. Buy the console
    2. Get the ring of fire
    3. Send it to get repaired by Microsoft
    4. Get a refurb. one back
    5. repeat steps 1-5 once ring of fire appears once again(or another problem occurs)
this is called the microsoft lifecycle...i have a ps2 slim and yes it only last a year laser problems galore won't read discs had to mod it in order for it to get working with a modchip that protects the laser from overburn...so ps2 problem solved.
I own a ps3 and its hads loads of problems(no modchip available yet) no custom firmware like the psp(can't play super mario/donkey kong in HD yet) can't read certain videos(custom firmware could fix this issue) and linux on ps3 can't hear sound, can't use blu-ray and graphics card in linux. Ok the ps3 is very limited to its functions because of copyright protection it has... x-box 360 was cracked with a firmware upgrade within weeks of release(copyprotection non-functional) at least that works on the ps3. This is to show x-box 360 was rushed they did'nt care that people could compromise there system oh heck they even charge for online gaming(i though all i needed was an isp whats this x-box live(which does not work half the time, ex halo 3 takes forever sometimes to find matches and i can't customize them to have rockets only). I am a ps3 fan because of square enix(kingdom hearts 3, ff13, ff13 versus) those are the games i am interested in. I would like to have bioshock but its much better on a pc anyways with directx 10(oh yeah microsoft screwed this up where is directx 10 sound my x-fi sound card has problems on vista)

Wow i've gotta say i've bought well over 12 xbox's, had 2 original playstations with mod chips, 3 ps2's, modded over 20 xbox's now and i've had 3 xbox 360's.

first one i bought refurbished and it got the rrod after 3 hours of halo 3. Second one was a replacement from the company i bought it from and that got stolen new years day. My third xbox is a 360 elite and it's probably the best thing out there. It gets a little warm after being on for hours on end but if you go to llamma.com you can see the difference between the new setup and the old ones.

All in all if i were to review the xbox360 it would probably get a mid level score due to reliability issues. It really sucks calling up microsoft and having them ship you a box. It's all free and yes if you have a gold account they will give you a credit if it's not a trial period. The old xbox's you could throw against the wall and they would still work fine, they were like a armored tank. You could easily take them apart and switch components, clean them, do whatever you needed and they were the most reliable thing out there as far as i'm concerned.

Bill gates finally fixed the problem but that won't stop people from buyin used xbox's that haven't been fixed. My advice to you, if you buy an xbox 360, get an elite or premium and make sure it's brand new.
