GTA IV was delayed because of PlayStation 3

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 25 Jan 2008 5:47 User comments (40)

GTA IV was delayed because of PlayStation 3 According to Rockstar Games VP of product development Jeronimo Barrera, development for the Sony PlayStation 3 was a contributing factor to the delay of the upcoming blockbuster game GTA IV.
In his interview with MTV, the VP praised the game and explained why the game had been delayed so much.

"I don't see anything being bigger in 2008 in any entertainment,"
Barrera said. "We think it's that big, and we just have to get the word out."

The game was supposed to hit retailers in October 2007 but the game developer made the decision to delay the tile until April 2008. At the time Rockstar CEO Strauss Zelnick blamed "technological challenges" for the delay.

"It's really no surprise to anybody that the PS3 was definitely a contributing factor to that,"
Barrera told MTV.

"Now, we're neck and neck. That's not an issue anymore. But back then that was something we were taking into account."

"We wanted the time, and I think we made the right choice,"
Barrera added.

"It was very difficult to make the choice because everybody wanted it. But we thought, you know, what with that extra bit of time, it's just going to be that much better and there will be more systems out."

Barrera added that the PS3 version was now identical to the Xbox 360 version and completely denied that the 360 version will require a hard drive.

The official street date for worldwide release on both platforms is April 29th.

i bet their investors are happy with delaying the release for the 360 past the holiday period but a bung may have dried a few tears, if i was an investor my shares would have been sold by now as the revenue generated over this period would have been in excess of any pay off.

all i can say is, MEH..... no pc version rockstar ain't getting my cash! as consoles suck in comparison to a decent pc.

In no way is this a negative for Sony...They didn't know how to code for the PS3 so they took there time & learn how to.Thank you for not giving us a crappie port like some other studios *cough*EA.

so all them under financed 3rd party developers will be loving the complexity of the ps3 then!

in the end there will only be 3 or 4 large studios capable of funding titles for these graphics machines, and i though games were about the fun, gone are the days of populous and elite and all the real innovative titles expect ridge racer 63 in a few years time and more crappy sequels with the amazing new feature "better graphics"

It doesn't seem to be enough for Sony to screw up their own console but now even the godly xbox owners will have to suffer from Sony's idiocy. "Boohoo we have blu ray but our games suck." A GAMEING console is meant for GAMEING. All the other shizzle is just a nice extra. Sony really has to get it priorities straight.

You are an idiot, the PS3 hasn't been around as long as the 360, thus developers know how to code for the 360 better. Why don't you go preach your biased fan boy bullsh*t on a corner somewhere.

At least this clears up who was at fault for the delay. I thought the more plausible explanation was not being able to fit on a dvd-9 for 360. I'm curious as to the size of the game and if you will need a two disc set for the 360 version.

I know blu-ray is much more difficult to code for and it's really not all that surprising that it lead to the delay.

725.1.2008 19:47

@ville, last time I checked there was a no fan boy flaming policy on AD. Keep riding your 360 high while you can. Only time my brother...only time.

Doesn't that mean that the PS3 version was lagging behind (which was already known by most people), but is now "neck and neck" with the 360 version? So doesn't that mean that the game still wouldn't have made release date for the 360 either.

At least, thats my interpretation of these quotes, also note "contributing factor" not sole reason.

Blu-ray is merely a storage medium, and shouldnt provide many (if any) coding issues, the problem is the CELL and PS3's memory setups.

If you stop and look at issues like disc space and HD caching the 360 can be as complicated as the PS3,unless you go with a multi disc game and that destroies multi player.

no need to be rude, well i'm a fanboy of sony but i do agree on what ur saying i'm studying computer science, once u get used to a language it gets easy, i guess the same is happening with the ps3, but they probably want to push it a little extra cuz so far ps3-360-games look better on the ps3 like the one that just came out burnout paradise, way better on the ps3 .. just facts

nobrainer up there .. i dun really think u can compare a 400$ dollar console with an at least 800$ pc. so probably a pc can beat a ps3 but what's the tag? games cost the same and pc doens't get everything all ,plus the fact that u don't have to deal with video card issues with a n specefic game or an issue regarding closed ports on the router.

so beat it pc are for shooter games cuz of the mouse and i think a ps3 accsesory just came out wich includes a mouse and keyboard(not sure saw a picture don't remember where thought)

1125.1.2008 23:01

depnds on the code UT3 can run nearly full frames on low to mem on a 300-500$ PC.

Consoles only have exclusive titles and locked hardware, when it comes to options from setting to control the PC is just better, and if you put 600-1000 in it it will make for a better entertainment center than a console at half the price.

Now with this said if Sony saw the light can put full control mapping in the next frimware and let people use keyboards and mouse as they wish then the only thing the PS3 lacks is more software to run various media and that is coming.

Sadly in order to nurture sales of their perhpails they never will unlock control that on top of a lack of cheat devices to play he wealth of poorly made games that are on the consoles theres lil reason to put up with it.

And one final nail in the consoles rocking chair....new games suck its all about theme, style and look and lil about gameplay and game "design", not to mention 50+ for consoles games that depreciate 4X slower than PC...no thanks the price is not worth the cost.

I don't think that there ARE any multi-disc games for the 360 are there? And I highly doubt that GTA IV will use even 80% of a DVD-9... there aren't many games that have even been that close.

1326.1.2008 00:29

I would have rather had the game released first for 360 and when the PS3 version caught up, then release that one. I could care less which came out first as I have both consoles.

1426.1.2008 00:36

the only thing that really interests me, is how the game will look and play on the 2 systems. if they are both comparable then the ps3 version will be the one i pick up. however, if there is a noticeable difference in quality which favors the 360, then i'll take that version.

Blue dragon for 1.... some of the 360 RPGs and non online leaning games are multi disc... and the main reason for NOT using multi disc games is because the 360 was not built to handle it sure it works great for SP but anything that has a lot of online content not so much, they didn't think space would be a issue didn't think they would be selling 3-6GB movies through live either...face it the 360 was poorly built from day 1 and since a lot of the issues are built into its foundation it can not easily correct itself to adapt to the issues it finds itself easily...look at UT3 its been delayed due to size issues, PGR was halved in size and these issues are not going away..

The PS3 has code issues that make some games run poorly so it comes down to some ports working better than others and this dose not give me good feelings for the exclusive titles....

hade
Really depnds on the game and company some take the time to port them some do not take the time to deal with each systems quirks.

Opinion. I prefer a game if it is on PC because to me it is superior. In most cases the graphics are better provided you have the graphics card, the KB&M setup makes for flawless controls, and online gaming it far better and consistent than online console games. I don't find that obtaining and installing drivers to be difficult, I actually feel bad for console gamers because they don't get the opportunity that we PC gamers get to improve our graphics and game performance with simple 1st and 3rd party updates. If a console gets updates its always going to be first party and its usually a copyright scheme thats being updated, not graphics performance. This is my opinion though and I don't expect others to agree with it.

Sadly most "PC" games have become console like due to the fact they port the titles to it AFTER they build and prune them for the consoles, look at C&C 3 or Bioshock or any other once upon a time PC only title, quality in general has suffered so really the only thing you have on a PC is the ability to have better control..even if you have to rape the ini files to get it (bioshock),even cryis as well put together as it has some key bind issues but at lest its stable and not watered down of the kiddy pool.

I guess what I am getting at is that the PC only has upgradeable hardware and software to wear you can make a game better easier than on a console, but the sad thing is they don't make many "PC" games any more.

IMO the PC offers the most bang for your buck for 500 of them and can havle your software exspensinces, consoles tend to be locked and one sided and looking to "bukkuka" on the consumer personally I have had enough of short sighted 50+$ games locked 300+ hardware, I'll get the games in time but they are losing money not treating the PC as a equal player in this, hell if they would up the quality on the control(full button mapping) and let me use a KB&M when I want then thats worth 200$ to me right there putting the total price I am willing to spend on the new consoles to 300-400$.. but until they do this....I wont spend more than 200 on it.....

GTAIV for consoles only!My heart bleeds for aniquated PC gamers out there.....hehehehehe.All thanks to the wonders of piracy eh!
That and having to upgrade your graphics card, drivers and fixing Vista....makes me larf :P
I was a PC gamer once,Team Fortess Classic,Quake,Counter Strike all paid for,not downloaded....them were the days.Just thinking of gaming with Vista gives me grey hairs and a migraine.

ppl will just use a 360 emulator, simple really, and at the end of the day who loses out, ppl that have to pirate to obtain something because of restrictions like anti consumer DRM or studios who restrict content having to pay huge amounts of cast to the likes of sony for secuROM? Hmm hang on sony make DRM they lobby for tighter rules, use scare monger tactics, omg they get money from both ends, who is benefiting exactly!

unfortunately this sounds like the console makers rhetoric to justify spending $/£xx on a system to only play games when you can spend very little more and have a pc that will play games to the same quality and a whole lot of other stuff too. if ppl are so incompetent they are not able to research and READ INSTRUCTIONS, quite frankly they are a danger to themselves or are immature kids with 0 patients.

updating drivers involves knowing who made your bit of hardware and maybe google, click system info button, type dxdiag into the run command, but that's obviously far tooooooo difficult for some!

BTW. vistas lard is because of the MPAA/RIAA using the DMCA to force HI-DEF DRM into the system but XP is still ok for games or XPlight for slower PC's

Schneier: Why Microsoft Sold Out Consumers in Vista

So when Hollywood demanded that Microsoft lard Vista with restrictions to access high-def DVD and digital cable content, the software giant was in a weak bargaining position.
or if you prefer this one from Prof. Peter Gutmann;
A Cost Analysis of Windows Vista Content Protection

its all because of Drm-Ray and HDCP and HDMI all because of the big studios. apple is having to do the same, open source is being blocked from Hi-Def, what a surprise but they don't want any debuggers looking at their dubious code, i mean if it wasn't for debugging sony's xcp would still be infecting ppl's pc and sending personal data back to sony!

@ChromeMud

If you are saying you cant make pirated versions of x360 or ps3 you are wrong.. It is as easy as playing pirated pc game.

Graphic card upgrades are still better way to go than play with 5 years old hardware and graphics. Pc:s are for those who want to do creative work, not just play mindlessly. So if you just want to play with your toy go ahead. I can use my pc to make reports and do 3d modeling etc. Im sure even you have a real computer (not some old hw they call console) you use in dayly basics so why not put that ps3 money on that... most games wont require most modern cpu so if you uprage your videocard with 400 you get really bad ass machine... and games are cheaper.

If r* wont release it on pc... no worries there are plenty of other games i can go with. Im more into a multiplayer anyways and r* doesnt seem to have a talent to make decent multiplayer.. if i heard correctly they might have 4 players multiplayer on gta4.. Wow really i wonder how can i avoid all those 4 players in such a "small map"

2126.1.2008 12:14

It's frankly absurd to think all console owners are kids with no brains that can't use a PC to it's full potential.
I choose to game on consoles because I can,not because it's the best,or because I'm too dumb and I'm sure there are a lot of us out there that don't want to waste all our time in front a computer.
My other half hates my computer because it gets too much attention as it is and no,I don't think it's time to upgrade her...........just yet! :P

2226.1.2008 14:31

sorry its easier to soft mod a 360 and play ALL360s games via a back up than it is playing a new PC game with unbroken protection!

I hope the PS3 is a easily cracked!

nobrainer
there are no 360 emluators and looking at the Xbox ones.......its going to be another 5 years....

Oh man. GTA was born on the PC. I played GTA, GTA 2, GTA: London 1969, and GTA III on the PC exclusively. GTA: SA I played on my cousin's PS2, but I don't have a gaming PC anyway.

They will port GTA IV to the PC soon enough, no worries.

Contradicts the early reports that the 360 was the cause of the delay.

That of course never made sense as the ps3 is a bitch to code for!

hey little man have you got glasses?..seems you need em! The vast majority of games released on both 360 and ps3 look better on the 360! Go read the reviews at IGN to prove my point. I haven't seen Burnout Paradise on either system yet but if it looks better on the ps3 then it would be one of the very few that do...now that is fact!

more like around half mainly do to immature optimization code, this should not be a problem with year.

Also the 360 has issues with space witch will only get worse so meh its like being fickle over the hard liquor you drink...its all piss anyway :P

2827.1.2008 15:31

yes the cell processor is to blame but to put it all on the ps3 meh.

Also the 360's are getting an os upgrade that allows Page file Index support. Somthing that should speed up game development while MS decides Blu-ray OR HD-Dvd.

Somthings Fishy and i think rockstars Not telling us what the real problim is

It's good to get the fault of the delay cleared up. I was under the impression (until this article) that it was mostly the space issue for the 360. Now, i know better. :)

Either way, can't wait to get a hold of it, and play it.

I'd have to agree with you on the consoles allowing full KB&M support. They would steal many gamers from their PCs if they would just realize this. I would probably have a 360 by now if that was the case. I would still consider my PC as my primary gaming machine, of course, especially for the original content and games that are natively meant for the PC such as Blizz and Valve games, but it would be nice to finally experience games like Dead Rising with proper controls.

You know, they might have needed more time to test and add content. Regardless, I would rather have a game released that is coded and tested well instead of something released that was half baked. It might suck that it has been delayed but it will benefit us. I am sure if Rockstar could have released it in October they would have. I am sure they would like the money has much as us wanting to play the game. :-)

there are a lot of reasons why its delyed but I am happy it is...would rather have the game finished and polished and not released as a buggy mess...

3631.1.2008 13:22

First i heard abotu it beign delayed because fo the 360, i always thought it was the coding for the ps3 which was why they were taking their time, and whislt they waited they were makign the360 dc packs!

Yeah its not a surprise the ps3 is clearly a peice of hardware which is too advanced for its time and peopel do not have much experiance with coding for it (i.e. the cell processor)

3719.2.2008 19:48

Smart decisions by rockstar this delay will make the fans happy because it is well explained and has good reason to it and now its up to the game to live up to expectations.

382.4.2008 09:14

odd, someone else at the top of rockstar said that this was untrue and that the the real reason for the delay was to ensure the multiplayer was brought up the original expectations. It does seem odd when you think about it that a game originally intended as exclusive to ps3 then gets delayed because the ps3 version takes longer to program for when it goes multiplatform. eh ...

Are you so sure the graphics are WAYbetter on the PS3??? Some fanboys fanboys minds are so shallow that they exaggerate things and dont have enough sense to be an unbiased gamer. That sounds just about as bad as the xbots who use to say the graphics are WAYbetter on the xbox 360. I have seen recent games like Call of duty 4, Devil may cry 4 and yeah there is some diff in graphics but i would hardly call it a way better experience on one console than the other. Go to youtube and compare some of the games. The graphics are not way better on either console. They are pretty close and if some one was playing Devil may cry 4 on a tv and you walked into the room, YOU COULD NOT TELL WHICH SYSTEM THEY WERE PLAYING WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE CONSOLE OR THE CONTROLLER. Now i agree the xbox 360 has an advatage over the ps3 d/t the release date. It is easier to program for the xbox360 at this time but i also believe that sometime in the future the ps3 games will start to outshine the xbox360 but as of now no one know how much better they will look graphic wise. Just stay unbiased untill then. Once the graphics look like comparing sega saturn graphics to psx, then you can say WAY better concerning graphics.

Haha ill agree with that, lxhotboyHowever The PS3 Does render darks and shadows a bit better. but when your playing a fast pace action game who really looks at there own shadow or how dark the room is when there is a flicker of light,i do.

the XBox has better Flare&Glare. like when i look at a sword the reflection and dent pits are a lot better drawn out. then again who has the time to obseve the dent on the wall or there gun there shooting, i do.

But as of now there is little or no Difference between the two in graphics prowless.
