Europe gets Skype for PSP

30 January 2008 17:08 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 16 comments

Europe gets Skype for PSP Sony Europe has released the latest firmware upgrade for its popular PSP handheld which allows gamers to make and receive phone calls using Skype software.

Users of the new PSP Slim and Lite can use the very popular communications package which, for those unfamiliar, allows free calls over the internet to other Skype users and the option to pay to make calls to cellular phones and landlines.

The update also added the Go! Messenger icon to the icon in anticipation of the launch of the service next month. Go! Messenger allows for video calls, instant messaging, voice messaging and voice chat.

Sony announced the addition of Skype to the PSP at CES early this month. There is however, one catch. To use Skype you must have the PSP Headset plugged into the Slim-only remote control which does not come included with the unit. Therefore you must buy it for $30 USD.

So this feature wont work w/ my older ver. psp? or will it.
Either way it sucks that I should have to buy a new PSP just to use these features.

You do need the psp slim for skype. I wouldn't just go out and buy a psp slim just to use skype. It is a nice feature but not nice enough to go out and buy a slim. stay psp phat and never look back.

As for now in America is not been yet decided this type of servive for the PSP, Europe is a test lab for the American market.

More likely this update will work with both types of PSP, surely is a nice feature to have, but I would not buy another PSP just for the Skype, for now the "basic" service Skype peer to peer is free (only).

When Skype becomes popular will charge you Up to the bones with expensive services. it has been always this way.... GREED. Keep it in mind in order to get around from SKYPE service you'll need a software hack hotspot network in order to get connected.

Only I may consider to buy another PSP, "IF" this PSP have features alike as to the iPhone.

Like I said earlier, skype works just fine. Skype is free p2p and to psp to psp. I don't recommend to go out and buy a slim just for the skype feature either. skype is not going to work on the psp phat. not enough ram. As far as for the hot spot hack, you can use your own wifi hot spot or any hot spot if you got the wifi wep keys. Skype does charge you for calling to landlines or mobile numbers at 2.1 cents a min which comes out to roughly 4.76 hours per $10 increments. This is to any and i do mean ANY land line or mobile number in the world. As for greed, well I do not see it, at least not yet. I would only use skype if I need to call to another country.

Skype is not for everyone. If you need skype on your psp, then go buy a slim psp. As for me, I would not buy a slim just for the skype or possible iphone features.

Here's the catch. Why can they not just bundle it together.
