Blu-ray drive coming to Xbox 360 later this year?

1 April 2008 17:49 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 16 comments

Blu-ray drive coming to Xbox 360 later this year? Although unconfirmed, industry sources are quoted as saying that Lite-On IT is currently developing Blu-ray Disc-(BD) ROM drives for the Microsoft Xbox 360 console and that they will begin shipments in the 3Q 2008.

Lite-On is one of the suppliers of the current Xbox-360 INTERNAL DVD-ROM drive but Lite-On and Microsoft have not commented on the speculation.

The sources continued by adding that Microsoft decided to switch to BD after the demise of HD DVD and that the new BD-drives will be fore next generation Xbox 360 game consoles.

Lite-On already ships BD-ROM and BD burners on a steady basis.

i call this another April Fools joke.
It was barely a month or so ago M$ said they would not go Blu-ray with the 360. They feel downloadable content from the Live! service is the future.

No I think I'm going to trade in my xbox360 for the Wii if this is going to happen.

d/l HD movies to 20gb/60gb hdd for keeps along with all the other stuff that gets stored on there? Now thats a joke!

I'd love to go to that Playtest study and watch BR-movies at MS and give them my opinion about that, as in...DO IT ALREADY!

Blah Blah Blah....When Microsoft announces it, I will believe it. The "insiders" regarding this matter have all been worthless.

That would be pretty ironic... M$ licensing hardware from sony to make their system a little more like the ps3... except for the catastrophic hardware failures, of course

I hate these rumors, Microsoft using Sony's format in its 360 has been shot down in January, in Feburary, and again in March.

I don't see Microsoft paying Sony to use Blu in its console this year, if ever. Microsoft representatives have stated multiple times that MS doesn't want to use Blu in its console. That should be enough to keep rumors away but apparently its not.

    Peace

Ok how many times does these rumors have to come up? Microsoft obiously aint gonna put a Blu-ray drive in their 360, heck they didn't even put the HD-DVD drive in the 360. I don't think Microsoft even wants an Blu-Ray drive add on thingy just for the simple fact that they're pushing their downloadable content on Xbox Live. I think Microsoft will possibly consider Blu-ray next-next generation for the next Xbox. Until then don't even think about Blu-ray anything popping up for the 360...cuz it aint gonna happen!!

Big Deal unless the drive supports Blu Ray 2.0 it isn't going to help anything and worse it leaves many consumers out in the dust because we would have to purchase a new xbox 360 and gamestop won't take the older 360 if the new one supports blu-ray.
