Panasonic planning cheap 37-inch OLED TV

24 June 2008 13:46 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 10 comments

Panasonic planning cheap 37-inch OLED TV Panasonic has announced that it is in the final stages of drafting plans for a new, cheap 37-inch, OLED-based HDTV that should have a price comparable to today's plasma and LCD displays.

The company says the actual designs and development have still not begun, but the TV should be commercially available in 2011 and will cost about $1300 USD.

Panasonic also noted that it hopes to enter the OLED TV business soon but that decision would mean releasing a smaller TV at a higher price.

Currently OLED TVs are still in the growing stages, and the only commercially available TV is the 11-inch Sony XEL-1. OLED TVs could be more mainstream in the upcoming years however as prices drop and the technology matures, especially given its advantages over LCD and plasma technologies. OLED displays will have much stronger contrast ratios, usually 1,000,000:1 or higher and produce true blacks as well as a lag-free image.

I agree with him. $1300 for a 37 inch tv in 2011. I can buy a 1080p 37 inch for less than that today... and its 2008. Unless this is 2160p or something amazing, i'll pass.

I was expecting them to say something like in 2011 $1300 will buy you like a 52inch 1080p from a hq brand (Samsung, Sony, etc).

lol i dont see it worth my while waiting 3 years to pay 1300$ for a 37 inch tv 1080p no matter what aleggedly is so amazing in this technology if i can buy a 50 inch lcd/plasma for the same price in 2008...buy the time its worth buying TVs equipped with iths technology LCD and plasma will be like CRT slowly fading i presu,e but that a long time away so i suggest you stick to them for the next 10 years..or for less if your rich i suppose

    Ya'll are craaaaazzzzy.

37" for 1300 bucks relates to the possibility of a 52 for less than 3 grand. THAT'S AWESOME!!! Right now I'm looking to buy a Sony 52" xbr4 for 2700.00 and the picture on OLED just puts LCD and plasma to shame.

Its true, for a TV that is so thin, has such vibrant colors, true black and huge contrast ratio, $1300 is nothing. Now the real question is can people hold out three years to get one?

I think the real question is will be people be able to convince themselves that every HDTV sold before 2011 has a poor quality image. When they can buy a 52 inch 1080p for $800 or less with the quality equal to or above whats top of the line today, will they spend $1300 for a 37 inch 1080p TV.

The price to size on this is silly I don;t care if the resolution difference is the difference in a 23inch crt computer monitier and a shobby 100$ 15 inch 700.1 or lower LCD TV, only once you get past 5 or 10K to 1 ratio you can tell the diffrance in them anymore 0_o.

BTW how dose one up convert SD content(old game machine, ect) to look better on a HD TV?

They should put cheap in quotation marks or at least have an asterisk beside it ^.^'
