Over 800,000 Wii consoles sold in October in US

13 November 2008 23:23 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 21 comments

Over 800,000 Wii consoles sold in October in US Nintendo sold 803,210 Wii consoles in the United States for the month of October, marking a large jump from last month.

According to figures from market research firm NPD, the Nintendo had better supply for its hit console and increased sales from 687,000 units last month.

Sales of the Sony PlayStation 3 fell again from 232,400 units in September to 190,000 for October. Because of a recent across the board price cut, the Microsoft Xbox 360 saw a decent sized sales jump from 347,200 units in September to 371,000 for October

“The price reduction on the Xbox 360 is paying dividends at retail as the platform realized a 7% unit sales increase over September,”
said analyst Anita Frazier. “Keeping in mind that September was a five-week month while October had four [weeks], the sales pace increased 33%.”

Even with diminished sales, the PS3 still made huge progress year-on-year selling 57 percent more consoles than in October 2007.

I don't under stand, it may just be me but the wii i feel is a gimmick. I own one and rarely play, besides mario kart and smash. Most people i know who have a wii and another next gen system do not like the wii much. Is it just the popularity of the wii thats pushing the systems or do people actually think this is IT system?

yeah i think that's what it is just a GIMMICK i got one too but hardly play it i think people get it because it cheap

its still 90 bucks more than xbox. The wii isnt a bad system but how the hell is it destroying the competition? There are like 10 good games only for the system. I think parents "think" its good for their kids to get "exercise" Im still fat and i play alot of wii, well did :)

For a serious gamer, the wii is a joke. It's not a SERIOUS gaming machine. It is aimed at the CASUAL gamer, one who wants to play a quick game of bowling once in a while. There are a lot more CASUAL gamers in this world than serious gamers, so the wii has a much larger target audience. It's all about the target audience.

For those of you who love the XBOX 360 or PS3, don't think the wii is clobbering your favorite console. Most of those people who bought wiis wouldn't even have considered another system, just because their games aren't made for the casual gamer.

My mother would buy a wii. She'd never even consider an XBOX (360) or PS3.

Nintendo restricted the amount of wii's shipped to different countries and called it a "console shortage". I know people who paid much more than retail price last year by buying from private sellers who snatched up as many as they could and turned a major profit on them. When people pay $100 more than retail price for a console because it can't be found in stores it sets a precedent as being unique and in high demand.

When wii's were finally available on a regular basis that retail price seemed pretty tempting especially if you were looking for one for a year and refused to pay more than retail. Nintendo was smart and by the time that MS and sony start hit their peak we’re probably going to hear rumors about a new nintendo console wii 2 for example.

I remember a few months ago I had a neighbor ask me to help get a wii working. When I showed up there was a women in her 30's who owned the wii and here parents who were in their 60’s couldn't wait to play it. Once I got the console working correctly they started playing wii sports bowling and claimed that they play about an hour a day every morning and enjoyed playing with their grand kids. I never thought I would see the day when grand parents would be practicing a video game to be able to beat their grand kids!

Why are people so concerned by Wii sales figures, the boys at Nintendo did a really clever thing and marketed to a casual audience. What does it matter if its selling more than PS3 or XBox, its targetted at other people who wouldn't play for 4-5hrs in one sitting.

Casual gamers are just that casual and aren't interested in flashy graphics or impressive online gaming.

    Live and let live.

You make a good point about their marketing here. Sony and MSFT never intended to reach (or at least never targeted) the wide audience Nintendo is capturing. I am curious to see what their response will be.

There are bad games on all systems but come on Nintendo. I remember when nintendo was elite and most games were great, but now people are being tricked into buying these games for this system where personally i think 10% are good . That might be pushing it too. I like the mechanics of the wii, but come on, there are so many systems sold, have a little more respect for the consumers and start enforcing stronger requrirments from these 3rd partie companies. Kidz sport games come to mind......wow, if you dont belive me, go buy one for the low price of $20, and im sure alot of parents have, and play this crap for more than 10 minutes..

I'd like to mention that the Wii is aimed at younger kids. My litlle girl loves hers, but the older boy doesn't care for it as much.

"Servicing" the casauls is everything to modern gaming, I always find it funny now other complain abotu nin...look at the rest of modern gaming with its rushed costly shtty games and tell me nin is that much worse?....

The whole industry has gone to pot over selling out to the casauls nin has been able to do it better than the rest and sell more software at that the industry simply dose not want to make cheaper/better games they want to push out top heavy shallow crap, and yes nin ain't any better over all quality wise but my point is if the industry was not so shallow the WII would have alot more "real games" on it.

The wii has a different target audience.. families and kids.. what a plan, sell to the people who don't have this "serious gamer" chip on their shoulders... and it obviously works brilliantly.

I love how the gaming geeks go on tirades about "casual gamers". Do the movie and music industries have have casual viewers/listeners? How do we gave the "hardcore" in those genres?

Personally, I say let the "casual" crowd in. Gaming is becoming big business: maybe it will be big enough where consoles cost the save as DVD players and games cost the same as CD's. Oops, that's wishful thinking. We all know there are millions in dev costs, right? It's not like movies don't have million dollar budgets and singers aren't making millions!

    Go Nintendo!

I love my WII. Though I don't play it too often, I absolutely love it. 35 years old. PS3 is only alright and kinda blows (hence their poor sales around the world) and XBox 360 just rocks..........but my computer beats 'em all. Gotta XBox 360 controller and can play pretty much every game available on 360. I do want to play Resistance though..........that PS3 game just looks phenominal.

LMAO... Oh yeah. Just classic. I really didnot see anything with the guys post and it was strange you posted first in a good mood and them seemed to be angry and calling the guy a retard. They do have a clinical term for that type of condition of sudden mood swings from happy to angry and sad as well as some prescription meds available.

The high sales are to be expected as the Wii truely isnot the console for serious gamers but a new trend with ideas has been opened up by the Wii. That is why is sells so much more than the others. That and it has a reasonable price.
