PSP 2 is coming, soon

25 February 2009 22:32 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 13 comments

PSP 2 is coming, soon According to Kotaku, the oft-rumored dual-analog, UMD-free PSP 2 handheld is coming, and could be on store shelves this fall.

David Perry, chief creative officer at Acclaim, had this to say:

"I spoke to a developer who is working on it right now. I know this developer is already working on it, so that means they have a prototype. That would sound like a fall release to me."

"I've been pounding on Sony for a long time to make the Playstation Portable relevant and not to let Apple stroll away with the portable game market," he added. "Look at what Apple is doing now. Why are so many investors investing in Apple game development? Trying to pitch a PSP game to investors right now is brutal."

With the removal of UMD will come the expansion of digital downloads through the PlayStation Store and more interestingly, sales of the games on Memory Sticks.

We will keep you updated.

With anti-piracy now top priority at Sony. See how well they succeeded with the PS3? Still cannot run burnt games and it has been a pretty long while.

Wait... what? I know you can get a ton of games for the iPhone and iPod Touch but isn't the main competitor to the PSP/PSP 2 the Nintendo DS/DSi?

With how insanely anti-piracy Sony is (well, I guess all of big electronics corporations, really) I am surprised they are going the Memory Stick route because it would make the piracy of the PSP2's games a bit easier since it's on a store-available storage device once the encryption is cracked/emulated.

Of course, the "Memory Stick" is yet another proprietary Sony-created format which hasn't bowed to well for them in the past.

    Peace

I think this is awesome, especially the high security (possibly)! Yay :)

I really hope that it has high security, the same security as the PS3, because then all the PSP devs will be working on the PSP2 and once they crack that then maybe it could be a similar method for the PS3 :)

It's a possible 2 for 1 deal... Everything is hackable, I just think the PS3 isn't really hacked because I don't believe there are enough people really interested or working on it. That or everyone is undercover and it really is impossible :/

The PS3 really can't be hacked (yet). There are many people trying to exploit holes and nothing has turned up. People are working underground and they still have yet to come up with anything really positive. PSP2 will use some type of hardcore security like the PS3 because Sony can't afford to let a new PSP turn into the old PSP.

Oh yea I was hoping that the PSP2 would use mini BR discs but I guess not... Flash memory will be stupid unless they come out with cheap 32GB cards, assuming the games will each be like double in size. Mini BR discs hold up to almost 8GBs I think, it would be cool to have a PS2 that fits in my pocket :)

Thank god they'll sell the games on memory sticks. You know memory stick is just a fancy word for game cartridge for the psp2.

My little brother has some hack done to his psp where he just loads the games off of the memory stick. It's nice because the battery life is greatly extended since the UMD drive doesn't have anything physical to spin, and no laser to move and focus either.

Also, you know those notorious loading times the PSP has? Well they're basically gone once you load off of the memory stick.

PS3&PSP both about as good as a doorstop for sony than anything, if the PSP wasn't hackable i would not own one.

adding a hardened encryption will make it that much harder to develop for.

i believe apple is supposed to be making there own gaming handheld.

although Sega could probably blow them all away if they wanted.

I waited for the PSP to be "modd-able" before purchasing one. I'm sure this move by Sony isn't just to indtroduce a new model, but introduce one that's a little tougher to hack.

So you'd rather re buy all the games to play on it?
The need to do something about that, I don't care if its wired or wireless something needs to be done about it.

Its tiresome having to "black market" all the best features in retail gear.....

thats not what i said, UMD is about dead as aTrac. only fitting sony would want to dump it too.

i don't think i've even taken some of the wrappers off my UDM games, as i had already downloaded them to see what they where like. out of the whole there are only 5 games i like.

Sad isn't it. great device, but a bigger hype

Now all we Need is a WonderSwan.

They better include dual analogs. A Bonus would be playing ps2 games on the psp2, but I doubt they will let us. As long as we have a hard drive on the new psp its possible.
