According to Nintendo UK general manager David Yarnton, the company will most likely phase out the DS Lite handheld if the upcoming DSi 'thrives.'
Yarnton would not commit the company to any such plans, but did note that if enough buyers purchased the updated handheld, the DS Lite would most likely be discontinued, just like its fatter brother, the original DS, was.
"We’ll let the market decide," he said. "We expect some people will upgrade, but we also anticipate that we’ll win over people who were still undecided on DS -- the extra features will help convince them. There’s an extra incentive."
The DSi is slated for an April 3rd release date in Europe followed by a North American release two days later.
The system will cost $169.99 USD in North America and will cost around GBP 149 in Europe, both 50 dollar premiums over the current model, the DS Lite.

If they do that then they better still have games that don't REQUIRE both Touch Screens.
I wouldn't mind shovelware being the case, but if something as awesome like Elite Beat Agents requires DSi...

While I don't believe this system has two touch screens? If that were the case elite beat agents would most definitely be impossible, considering how hard it is already ...
Back on topic, It only makes sense that it would. The only thing that I can see that would slow sales is the lack of gba compatibility. That and just that it seems incredibly gimmicky with the cameras. Until some games come out that utilize the one on the inside I don't see a point in buying it. That and I has to be white -_- WHY IS THERE NO WHITE ONE!

No, just no, "dual touch screens" are just rumors, and theres ONLY ONE TOUCH SCREEN, as well out-side camera is 0.3mega pixel, and dsi supports sdhc(to 32gb) cards

The cameras are a mere novelty addon to the DSi. At first, I was skeptical about them but now, I moved on to the mind set of, "Eh, it'll be fun to mess around with them".
All in all, come release date, I will be buying one and I have to find the biggest SD card that I can find. Will the DSi actually support SDHC?

I dont really see these as taking off and getting rid of the DS Lite.
The DS Lite supports GBA games. Customers typically like their backwards compatibility.
The DS Lite has longer battery life.
All this traded for a camera and features you can have by picking up a M3 card.
Nintendo can keep this upgrade.

Either way, as long as no important DS games can only work on DSi then the Lite should be fine
