Hulu becomes number four video site in the US

According to the latest data from comScore VideoMetrix, Hulu has jumped up to fourth place among the largest video sites in the US, drawing an audience of 34.7 million for the month of February.

Those users watched a total of 332.5 million video streams, a giant 33 percent increase from January.

In just one month, Hulu surpassed Viacom and Microsoft in viewers and total steams viewed, and is quickly gaining on Yahoo in third place. YouTube (Google) and Fox remained the clear leaders, with 5.3 billion streams and 462.6 million streams respectively.

Since comScore first started measuring Hulu, its unique user base has grown by 410 percent and its overall streams by 277 percent.

I watch shows on hulu all the time, I only with that they would add more content. I love the way they have it set up to watch full length shows and even movies. It is awsome that the comercials only average 30 seconds on hulu, while on a regular tv it can be 4 min. [ + quote]

I bet I know at least one reason why their growth jumped so much. Naruto..... Dattebayo quit doing subtitles for the Naruto series due to the fact that Viz Media started doing their own subtitles and releasing them on Hulu. With an average of 400,000 torrent downloads per episode, one episode a week on Dattebayo, if 25%(guessing here) of the people started watching it on Hulu instead of switching to the other fansub group, that's alot of new viewers. I don't live in America so I tried watching material on hulu using HotSpot Shield. Sometimes it works well, sometimes it doesn't. Why can't they just cut the crap and offer free streaming for viewers abroad? Is there a reason why they can't serve viewers outside the US? [ + quote]

Most of the American companies in their ads probably operate in Canada anyway so I can't see why we shouldn't be allowed to watch their stuff. Hulu should consider getting advertisers from other countries so that they can offer their service outside the US. [ + quote]
