'Snow White' to hit Blu-ray seven weeks before DVD

Disney, ever the Blu-ray trend setter, has announced that they will be re-releasing the classic "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" on Blu-ray on October 6th, a full seven weeks before it returns to standard DVD on November 24th.
The only times a similar move was made was in the last month when Disney released "Bolt" and "Bedtime Stories" on Blu-ray two days before its standard DVD cousin.

However, it is important to note that the Snow White Blu-ray will include a standard DVD in the package, following the current trend.

“We are thrilled that the consumer has clearly recognized the value in our Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack releases and will have another opportunity to maximize their viewing options in October with Snow White,”
Disney president Bob Chapek added. “With today’s technological breakthroughs found in Blu-ray, we are confident that this version of Snow White will easily become the reference point for high-definition home entertainment libraries and family collections all over the world.”

Personally I don't see the point of movies like Snow White, which were originally done via hand-drawings (although they have been re-mastered with computers), on Blu-Ray in HD.

With completely computer animated films (i.e. Bolt) or films that have a decent amount of CGI (Bedtime Stories) than yes, they could be "worth" picking up on Blu-Ray.

snow white has been out for years, on VHS and DVD.

Snow White has been in the Disney "Vault" since January 2002. Yes you can find used copies, but new copies cannot be found.

They want people to get the BR version with the DVD in it, then release the DVD version in 6 weeks? WTH? Doesn't make sense to me either. Why not release it seperately, especially since the BR version will see improvement (not much) and won't see it at all in the DVD version. I call this marketing BS!! If anybody get the BR version, they're going to give the DVD version to their grandparents so that when their grandkids come over they can see this movie. Young kids probably won't see the difference anyways. . .

While I don't care for movies made by Disney, other companies should also start including a DVD copy. I find it annoying how I can watch Iron Man (BD) in my family room but not in my bedroom. I rather have an extra physical copy on DVD, instead of a digital copy (for ipod). Why would anyone want to spend 2+ hours holding their ipod inches away from their face? Not the movie viewing experience for me, that's for sure.

The only reason companies do things like this is to up BD sales numbers without separately helping DVD sales numbers. That way they can say BD has proliferated the market even faster and remove DVD from the market as soon as possible. It's also useful for those that have BD players in their living rooms and DVD in other rooms.

I don't think so. The President of Disney thinks that. He must be a little clueless on what consumers want. My kids (4) could care less about Snow White with today's stories, animation and soundtracks. They wouldn't even sit thru it on DVD and Blu-ray's not going to make a difference.

I think releases of this sort are geared toward collectors ... people who already own this film on the previous 2 formats.

So this is how they will force us to convert to their overpriced format. Soon it will be "only on Blu-Ray", at that point i will stop purchasing movies.

thank god for hackers!

yes there is a difference and there not forcing us to do anything. prices will drop eventually it will be slower than the drop from DVD but they will be in the affordable.

BD-R is what i'm worried about.

I bet there were thousands of people saying the same when DVD came out and they still wanted it on VHS!

They are not forcing you to convert to anything just giving preference to Hi-Def.

I think it is good though that they are including a DVD in the box because as 1 poster mentioned not everyone has a Blu-ray player in every room, the same goes for a HD Tv so gives you the option to watch it else where.

I bought Sleeping Beauty on Blu-ray, incredible difference between that and the original DVD release. Even the DVD copy included in the BD version looked better than the original DVD release.
These Disney releases of classics onto Blu-ray is more or less for collectors.

They release the BD + DVD version first hoping anyone who just wants to buy the DVD version will buy that one to future proof their collection. Smart move by Disney.
