'Slim PS3' revealed in leak?

14 May 2009 22:44 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 44 comments

'Slim PS3' revealed in leak? Yesterday we reported that rumors were flying that a 'redesigned' PlayStation 3 was to be revealed by Sony at the upcoming E3 event.

Today, pictures of a possible 'Slim PS3' have been leaked, showing off a 120GB hard drive, two USB ports, and a heavily redesigned body that is completely slim-lined.

Sony has added that "We don't know anything about the system in the photos, we currently don't have any plans for a redesigned PS3".

The pictures:

If they do release a slim version, I'd love to see the size of the power brick! I wonder if it will be bigger than the 360's?

I heard that the PS3 uses a lot more electricity than the 360 in some article that compared electricity usage of all 3 consoles (wii uses a lot less than both) so the power brick will be huge probably.

If that's the top of the regular PS3 than they must be changing the font on top as right now it is spelled out Playstation 3, and the picture just says PS3.

Not entirely correct. The original 60gb mb was 180 (watts) whereas the current 80gb is 110 directly because of the 65nm CPU/GPU. Plus when idling, browsing & other minor usages it is definitely lower...now during gameplay it *might* be higher but I have to double check the 360's power consumption stats. Either way, it shouldn't be drastically more IF it is.

nice slim hope they have have a slimer harddrive

The harddrive is already a 2.5 slim laptop drive, the only other option for them would be to go to solid state or flash etc...but that would be MUCH more $$$$$

Personally, I hope this pics are fake because it looks UGLY. Hope I never have to replace my 60GB model with one of these!

This biased statement is relevant to the article because...?

Anyhow... It's most likely to be fake, unless this new Slim PS3 comes with some giant power brick and some other stuff.

Looks pretty cool, and coming out sooner than I expected. But not interested in it unless it has an internal PS; which looks unlikely.

These are very early pics of which are not the final product (as I stated earlier)

+1 on relevancy...it is not 100% confirmed but as of right now it's pretty close to it from what I have gathered. But we'll see. As far as the internal PSU I hope so as well but going by previous "PS Slims" I would bet not.

Oh, I know. I saw the pics several days ago elsewhere. Even though the mobo is smaller, the case almost looks like a LARGER footprint compared to the current model. I don't really care if the power supply is internal or external as some others have commented on...internal PS devices tend to go bad faster than external PS ones. And by the way, it looks like the mobo comparison pics are showing the old 60GB w/ hardware PS2-compatibility mobo as the old mobo. KINDA fishy.

I think it MIGHT be a legit pic of A proposed prototype new model case, but I kinda doubt it's a final new case design. I know Sony mentioned a redesigned PS3 as a set-top box component ('box' case?) back in 2007, which kinda seems more realistic to me.

Also like some have said (at least elsewhere), Sony's USUAL response to rumors are "No comment"-type responses, but for these pics, have said, "Totally bogus," which seems like a more weighty denial.

I'm still waiting for one of these "A PS3 price cut is imminent" claims to come true ("imminent" meaning within the next 6 months...Hell, _I_ could be THAT accurate on a lot of things!).

For the record, the Falcon revision of the 360 cut the power usage from 165W to 90W and they kept the power brick the same size. In Microsoft's case they're focusing on keeping the system reliable rather than saving space. I believe the Jasper revision which uses even less power still uses the big power brick.

From what has been "estimated" over at NeoGaf the case is actually smaller in all dimensions using the size of the DS3 and a BD disc a reference

And it is a 60gb MB for the reference so I don't understand what would be "fishy"? It is intended to show how much smaller the old vs the new size inside of a standard PS3 case (as of today) to help provide an idea of how a PS3 Slim could be easily possible...

I also like the external (for the slim models & the 360) as it does give you the fall back option to easily replace if something goes wrong with it. The price cut is a bit of comedy already but it is going to happen this year (it HAS to as the timing is right).

Thanx Sam, I had no end of trouble for some reason trying to find recent valid info to add to the comparison. I did find some tests showing how at different stages (idle, browsing, watching, playing etc.) and it showed varied results but for gaming the PS3 definitely consumes more. The only other thing I forgot to add is how the PS3's PSU is a universal one so anyone can use theirs just about anywhere with just a simple prong adapter without the need for a power/voltage converter; but I wonder if that would affect it's consumption in any way? Probably not, plus will it be the same feature if a Slim is released is what I would like to know.

Switching PSUs tend to have a higher leakage current, but power usage should still be pretty indifferent.

Back to the topic at hand in discussion...here is some more info of which supports the probability of the Slim

Looks like others are believing the validity of these pics...First LevelUp, then Spong, now Engadget and another. If they where fakes why issue cease and desist orders via lawyers? Especially with the odd kicker of "asking" for the C&D letter to be confidential?
