Microsoft E3 summary: New motion control system and Metal Gear Rising

2 June 2009 2:47 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 38 comments

Microsoft E3 summary: New motion control system and Metal Gear Rising Microsoft had a pretty big day today at the E3 Expo, unveiling an entirely new control system for its Xbox 360 console among other notable announcements.

Dubbed Natal, the system is a fully hands-free control system which uses facial recognition and multiple motion sensors to allow users to playback games using their body motions and not buttons.

The system is still in early stages, but Microsoft has sent full functioning prototypes to all big game developers.

Showing off the technology, developer Peter Molyneux said the system could recognize facial expressions as well, determining the mood of the player or players and "reacting accordingly."

Will Natal be successful however? Piers Harding-Rolls, senior analyst with Screen Digest, says it will depending on a number of factors.

"I think the technology looks very interesting but its success depends on the content and how easy it is to use," Rolls added.

"The other aspect is cost and how they will get it out to the user base. That said, I think Microsoft would like to get it out sooner, rather than later."

"Sales of the Xbox 360 hit their peak in 2008 and are now in decline, in terms of console sales, so you would expect them to get it out as soon as possible to rekindle interest in the platform."

Also notably at the show Microsoft announced they had made deals with Twitter and Facebook in an effort to make "full integration between three of the largest social networking sites on the planet." The third being, of course, Xbox Live.

In a move that will certainly rile up both Xbox and PlayStation 3 users alike, legendary developer Hideo Kojima took the stage and announced that a new Metal Gear title would be headed to the Xbox 360, and that he had already started development. The game, "Metal Gear Rising," will mark the first time a Metal Gear Solid title has been developed for a system not created by Sony.

Kojima's own site has now been updated with a new picture of character that resembles Raiden, from Metal Gear Solid 2. You can view it here: Metal Gear Solid Rising

Motion sensing with a 360 would be cool cause obviously it has better graphics then the Wii but I really don't like how there's no controller at all... I mean if the Wii made people look stupid this would probably be even worse lol

MGS:R from what I've heard is supposed to be like a prequil to MGS4 or just kinda MGS4 in Raiden's point of view, what he did while Snake was doing that, etc. I highly doubt that will be as great as MGS4 though, and that's what many people want on their 360s, MGS4. Now their trying to take MGS into a new direction...

Motion Sensing is cool for certain games, like Zelda and kiddie games. But for hardcore games, we gamers would prefer a physical joystick.

Thing is Metal Gear Solid 4 was used on a BluRay Disc, and they used every single bit of space on that 50GB BluRay Disc... XBox 360 uses a HDDVD which can only hold up to 30GB if dual layered.

So I am going to assume that this game will either be short... or the graphics arent going to be like MGS4.

Don't get me wrong I love the Metal Gear Franchise. Just think they should have stuck with PS3, there i said it.

Doesn't the 360 only read DVD-9? I thought you needed a HD DVD add-on, and it only played movies, not games.

Perhaps the 360 version will be multi disc?

Sorry I had to lol :P

Even within MGS4 they make a joke saying you have to switch the disc and then its like "Oh yea the PS3 has Blu-Ray!" Now their makin' Xbox games anyways :/

I don't mind having a multi-disc game like Blue Dragon instead of one 30gb plus disc game. No big deal to me.

    ROFL....
I doubt they would market it like that anyway. They would probably make double sided DVD-9's, halving the total number of discs to 10, then ship 2 per case, halving that to 5 cases.

    lol

my bad, i thought i herd all 360 games were made with HD DVD's

I highly doubt this is going to be MGS5 or equivalent, plus with the disc space issue, its going to be tight, but Kojima must have a way or getting the utmost quality on a console that WILL need to OC'd to play.

Maybe software overclock possibly much like Crisis core for the PSP.

Also maybe it will be mandatory to install to the HDD, Would suck if you havent updated to the new dash XD

Kojima will prevail through these many problems and bring out a kick-ass game

It's amusing that nobody mentions the motion control system coming from Microsoft. Sort of reminds me of the Wii Sensor Bar.

natal is amazing it makes the wiis item look primative! and thats hard to do, but IMO the new thign is the sony motion, the perfect fusion of the uttlery amazing netal, but with a wimote for games that need a trigger or buttons!

Natal looked good until I realised that it only works on games made specifically for Project Natal, like small, arcade games.
Still looks decent though. Maybe MS would implement a feature on all 360 games that Natal would work but from what I've heard, it's pretty pointless.

Now.. Sony's new Eyetoy sort of thing. That looks amazing.
Maybe not a good thing for FPS, but it would work for God of War, possibly Uncharted, inFamous.. You know, about everything. Especially for sword games.
The new motion sensitive thing is great, bringing movement into hardcore games where MS and Nintendo failed to do that.

Well the thing is I have a PS3 and i actually wanted a 360 for a while, its just everytime im about to go out and buy one, i hear another commotion about someone getting the red ring of death, and how its a big problem. I'll eventually get a 360, its just i dont want to get the rrod and get screwed over. (Yes I know they have warranty's for the rrod)

The newer model 360's are better. It uses less power.

I agree wholeheartedly... the last thing I feel like doing is flailing about the room like an freakin noong, mugging for the camera. Especially not for hours on end.

Anyway, the better alternative is the new sensitive ECG devices like the Emotive EPOC neuralheadset. Motion sensing seems like such a backward step... anyway, they detect body movement too. Ah well.

    http://www.news.com.au/technology/story/...5014117,00.html

I known about this thing for a while now, over a year at least.

On a new Metal Gear for the 360... meh! Especially the thought that Kojima insists on resurrecting his awful boy-girl Raiden again, ugh! All those hours of pre-rendered HD character exposition accounted for at least 80% of the Blu-ray's content in the last game. Talk about JDS! Kojima probably thinks he will do it in-game now, like much of RE5. If there's multiplayer that will possibly go on another disk (that's been done before... hmm, I seem to recall that might have been done with MGS3).

Besides, it doesn't happen to everybody. I've only ever bought one X360 and I've never had a problem with it. With the NXE the games just play off the HDD now- it works fine for me.

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.

Meh Motion Sensing can emulate a mouse and keybaord setup and take it to new levels of control the trouble is the WII didn't refine its control and precision much that's why it feels like its going backwards it just was not made for precision...

And I would argue that Zelda is not a kiddy game it has more depth in its design and gameplay than halo and COD combined....

Ah modern gaming its like modern film only the watering down of fiction and characters is replaced with shallow and watered down mechanics, gimmicks and shiny-er "people".

Bah to your meh Zip... whatever you say, motion sensing is old tech mate. Are you seriously suggesting waving your arms/fingers about beats just thinking a command? Let's see... an example, twiddle my fingers or just instantly have the pointer move to and "click" on a screen element? And that will be basic compared to the level of control and the endless possibilities when it becomes more refined.

I'll take the BCI (brain-computer interface) thanks. Your looking at the future here. I know people that are actually worried about these devices... that just makes it more intriguing for me tho. Gad, I'm glad I live in these times!

Btw, juaneryle didn't actually call Zelda a kiddy game Zip. You misread the sentence- i.e. "Motion Sensing is cool for certain games, like Zelda and kiddy games..."

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.

What I am getting at is that the interfacing for the controller is under developed, take a PS2/3 dual shock controller cut it in half, adjust the buttons some, give it more precision than the wii crap and you have a refined and truly gamer ready motion senseing setup, the problem with the WII is they made it for casual non gamers.

The stuff your talking about wont be in the consumer market for 10+ years if ever for mainstream consumer video games....

    DOH!

I just got up and my brains are not fully functioning yet...... and yes fully functioning for zippy is half functioning for the average fool :P

Also yes Zelda is a kiddy game and sometimes it can be to casual but as a game it has more depth than 90% of other mainstream titles.

Don't see why disk space will be an issue. Metal Gear Solid: Rising will probably have much less pre-rendered HD video content. And besides, the Xbox 360 is no stranger to multi-disc games. Lost Odyssey is on 4 DVD-9 and M$ stacked three discs on a spindle on one side of the game case and then put fourth disc in a paper sleeve. lol. Cheap bastards.

Not sure what to think about MGS Rising. Never got around to MGS 2 or 3. Only MGS1 on the Playstation and that "game" (it's almost as much of a movie as it is a game. lol) was awesome. I liked the cinematic style of the game but I bet if I re-watched all the MGS cutscenes now I'd probably think the story was over-rated. I was like 13 when I played MGS and the whole cinematic style of games was new and novel to me at the time. I might try Rising. But I'm getting tired of Japan's obsession with pretty boy video game protagonists. Even the ones with masculine personalities like Yuri from Tales of Vesperia could pass for a chick. When I saw the cover art for that I was like, "cool, you get to play as a hot purple haired chick!" Then when I looked at Wiki, found out Yuri is really a dude and I cursed Namco for pulling that stunt. If I didn't already know Raiden was a male beforehand, I probably would have been fooled by him too.

I've only played 1 and 2, I didn't care for 3+ it was more of the same with a stranger plot and more cut scenes. One thing I loath about the transition from 1 to 2 is they dumped all the great musical scores from 1 and went with generic and bland tencho music for the series even the GC remake suffers from it....

All in all MGS could have better/smoother gameplay and less

Microsoft charges developers extra if they go past 2 discs, so I'm not expecting much from this game at all.

"...10+ years....if ever..." ROFMAO Nuh-aah Zippidy, don't you ever follow links? Even your giant brain has to learn something new occasionally (jk). You can reserve a Emotiv EPOC neuralheadset NOW! (max four per customer). Final beta testing is going on in San Francisco to be available in the next few months for the public at $299US.

    Home- http://www.emotiv.com/
    To reserve- http://www.emotiv.com/corporate/2_0/2_4.htm

Which sh!t's me considerably because the gadget is only available to Yanks only. Especially because it was developed in Australia!- I saw it on the tube about a year ago on the "New Inventors" and the "Catalyst" shows here.

And yep, it will work with any PC game or app ("...by mapping certain thoughts to keystroke patterns"). So blast off to Saturn, the future is NOW!

    EmoKey- http://www.emotiv.com/corporate/2_0/2_5.htm

So, you can imagine there is a considerable software component to the device. So refinements in drivers and third-party programming etc etc.

Emotiv SDK (Software Development Kit)- http://www.emotiv.com/corporate/1_0/1_3.htm

Even though you don't really believe it exists... can I get you to buy me one and send it over mate? Pretty please... with rocket fuel on top?

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.
