Apple reveals 64GB iPod Touch, 160GB iPod Classic, new Shuffles, camera-equipped Nano

Apple revealed changes to its iPod line-up during its media event today. Before this, at the event, Apple had also announced they have sold 30 million iPhones, served 1.8 billion Apps, and sold 8.5 billion songs through iTunes. Apple also announced the iPod market share is at 73.8 percent, 225 million iPods sold, and that there are more games for Touch than PSP & NDS. Apple has also introduced iTunes 9, with a full set of new features.

However, most eyes fixed on the Apple event were waiting to hear about what happens now for the iPod line-up. After weeks of rumors and speculation, here it is.

Apple iPod Touch 2009

Firstly, as previously reported the iPod Touch is now $199 for 8GB and $299 for 32GB model. A new 64GB model has been revealed with the $399 price tag, which sports the speed of the iPhone 3GS and OpenGL ES. The Apple show focused particularly on the iPod Touch' sales; over 20 million since it was launched, making it the faster growing MP3 player. It's gaming features also got considerable attention today, with announcements of Madden NFL 2010 and Assassin's Creed 2 headed to the platform via the App Store.

Apple also took the time to make a bit of noise for the gaming industry, comparing the total number of games available for the PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS and for the iPhone/iPod Touch. It touted that the PSP has 607 games available, the NDS has 3,680 games available, and the prices of the games for both platforms are easily higher than games sold at App Store. It then went on to point out that technically, 21,178 games are now available from the App Store.

The 64GB model is being advertised as being capable of storing 14,000 songs, 80 hours of video and 90,000 photos with a battery that can provide up to 30 hours of music listening or 6 hours of video viewing. All iPod touch models have Nike+iPod support built-in, are WiFi-capable and Bluetooth-equipped. iPod Touch 3.1 software is also now available.

Apple iPod Classic 2009

If there is one thing the iPod Classic is not short on after the 2009 conference, it is capacity. Apple has kept the same $249 price tag, but has increased its storage capacity from 120GB to 160GB, which it claims is good for up to 40,000 songs, 200 hours of video, 25,000 photos, or any combination. It also advertises up to 36 hours of battery life for the model.

No other major improvements were made to the iPod Classic, it retains its 2.5-inch screen and its three pre-loaded games, Vortex, iQuiz, and Klondike with extra games available for the click-wheel equipped model from the iTunes store.

Apple iPod Shuffle 2009

The iPod Shuffle is available in new colours, and also have a new headphone adapter that works with any headphones. It is available in Black, Blue, Green, Pink or Silver, $59 for 2GB capacity and $79 for 4GB capacity, and an additional 4GB model stainless steel model will be available for $99. Apple advertises the 4GB model as being capable of storing up to 1,000 songs.

A "Voice Over" feature will tell you the artist and song title at the push of a button without disturbing your listening experience. VoiceOver also tells you the names of your playlists, so you can easily switch between them to find the right mix for your mood. Without having to take your eyes off your run, or whatever you're doing.

Apple iPod Nano 2009

Over 100 million iPod Nano models have been sold, making it by far the most popular MP3 player available. The new Nanos also feature Cover Flow, Voice Over, Genius Mix and an FM Radio tuner. The Nano is available in Black, Blue, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple, Red, Silver, and Yellow. The models are available with 16GB capacity for $179 and 8GB capacity for $149.

The biggest change of course, is that the new iPod Nano players feature a video camera, with a polished anodized aluminum finish. A quick scroll through the menu takes you to the video camera. Then you�re ready to record video in portrait or landscape. A built-in mic lets you capture audio, too. And when you play back your video on iPod Nano, you�ll hear the recorded audio with it.

Fifteen fun video effects let you add a little Hollywood to your video. Just scroll through, choose the effect you want � such as film grain or motion blur � and start recording.

I am very disappointed that the rumor of a camera and mic for the itouch wasn't true. I was all set to buy one, not sure now, maybe I will get the 32MB version. Now I will look more closely at the Zune HD player. Putting video recorder on the nano and not the itouch? Not understanding that one. First time I've been disappointed in Apple. [ + quote]

I agree. $399 is steep for any mp3 player. Even $299 is still pretty up there for 32GB. Honestly, I didn't care for any of these iPods. I'm still content with my 3G Nano. The only thing I was excited about was that I was hoping they were going to talk about the next iPhone, but I guess not. [ + quote]

Disappointing news. I had the money saved for this. I was ready to purchase a new 32GB Touch with a camera and mic included. I was looking forward to possible skype capability and a nice portable organizer/camera with the occasional game. There probably would have been some sick apps that would have incorporated the camera and mic. It would have been a nice slim device to bring to concerts. I already have a 120GB Classic with most of my music. I would only have put a few of my favorite albums on this one. I guess I am $399 richer as of this announcement. I'm very disappointed in Apple over this. So according to Job's, the touch is officially a handheld gaming machine? I don't need or want one of those, otherwise I would have bought a DS or PSP already. Over 2,000 games to choose from! How many of those are regurgitated clones? Popcap anyone? One copy of bejeweled is enough for me. I'd rather buy a PSP for $170 and deal with the "limited number of games", and keep my iPod classic for my music than drop $400 for a handheld "gaming machine." Well the 160GB wasn't out for very long... Apparently its very buggy or whatever so they pulled it sooner then later and introduced a revised 120GB and advertised that. I'm sure you could ask most people and they wouldn't know there was a 160GB Classic before the 120Gb lol [ + quote]
