Netflix separates DVD and Streaming services, will cost much more now if you want both

Netflix has announced today that it has separated its DVD and streaming services, which means if you want both, the price just increased substantially.
1-DVD-at-time unlimited plans will cost $7.99 per month, the cheapest it has ever been, but if you want unlimited streaming you will need to pay an additional $7.99.

Currently, a 1-DVD plus unlimited streaming plan costs just $9.99.

The plan is now effective for new members and will become effective for existing members on September 1st.

Netflix has 24 million subscribers in the U.S. and Canada and is set to expand to South America and Mexico later this year.

The company explains its move:

Last November when we launched our $7.99 unlimited streaming plan, DVDs by mail was treated as a $2 add on to our unlimited streaming plan. At the time, we didn’t anticipate offering DVD only plans. Since then we have realized that there is still a very large continuing demand for DVDs both from our existing members as well as non-members. Given the long life we think DVDs by mail will have, treating DVDs as a $2 add on to our unlimited streaming plan neither makes great financial sense nor satisfies people who just want DVDs. Creating an unlimited DVDs by mail plan (no streaming) at our lowest price ever, $7.99, does make sense and will ensure a long life for our DVDs by mail offering. Reflecting our confidence that DVDs by mail is a long-term business for us, we are also establishing a separate and distinct management team solely focused on DVDs by mail, led by Andy Rendich, our Chief Service and Operations Officer and an 11 year veteran of Netflix.

Now we offer a choice: Unlimited Streaming for $7.99 a month, Unlimited DVDs for $7.99 a month, or both for $15.98 a month ($7.99 + $7.99). We think $7.99 is a terrific value for our unlimited streaming plan and $7.99 a terrific value for our unlimited DVD plan. We hope one, or both, of these plans makes sense for our members and their entertainment needs.

Netflix is REALLY sticking it to long-time loyal users here. Sad. I'll see what I want to do the closer it gets to September 1st...

212.7.2011 13:50

I'm not that surprised about this, nor can I really blame them for upping the price of their services. What do you expect them to do? If the studios weren't such pricks about the content netflix is allowed to stream or rent by mail and charging them a king's ransom just to have rights to it, then this wouldn't have to happen. Under the circumstances, I'm willing to give netflix some credit for still being as afoordable as they are. Granted, any netflix plan can't compare with an "anything I want, when I want it freebie plan" through torrents, but in terms of a legal offering I can't personally complain. If you want to blame someone, blame the content owners for diliberately making choking as much life out of netflix's business model as they can, Don't blame them. Unless of course you'd rather they start defying the studio's demands and just do whatever they want, which would just end up costing them in litigation, they're not being all the mean at least in my view.

312.7.2011 13:52

Looks like my netflix bill is gonna be cheaper.

412.7.2011 13:53

Until they get to stream new releases I do not have much use for their streaming selection at all. The kids use it but, even then their options are limited.

512.7.2011 14:04

Their pricing is beginning to look more and more like a cable bill.

612.7.2011 14:15

Question for our readers...

How much would you pay for the streaming service if Netflix began streaming ALL new releases day-in-date with their physical DVD release? Would you cut your cable bill out?

712.7.2011 14:29

This is a sad day for any Netflix user. I use both services and if they had all their dvd selection available for streaming this would not be a problem but since its not possible then i might have to cut my netflix bill and i really used to brag to everyone about their services and how i loved being a member but now it seems like they will be raising their prices every year its so sad it would be different if i only used one service but seeing as im using both THIS SUCKS!

812.7.2011 14:34

Don't say I didn't tell you so.
Going on month four without Netfux.
Don't need it or their low quality streaming crap.
Jeff

As a die hard Blockbuster hater for life, it's pretty big news when I say Blockbusters new "redbox" .99 a day rentals business model is looking better to me now.

with cable companies bandwith capping their networks to choke off Netflix streaming, and studios bending them over with royalties Netflix is a really hard place. But that's not our problem as consumers, we'll just move on to the next better deal. And the fact i can walk into a blockbuster store and rent stuff on the spot for .99 works for me.

Not me because I watch lots of tv shows that Netflix doesn't have yet. Also Redbox charges 15 cent extra now and I wish Redbox does streaming as well.

the article said it will cost MORE if you want BOTH. it didnt say that the cost of both services separately are going to increase.

jeez.....

How many times must I state this...
Eventually you will not be able to rent a hard copy. You will be stuck with streaming. I don't want streaming so I'll have to purchase a hard copy.

That's some bold speculation.

Time will tell.
If you think about the cost Netflix pays mailer stuffers it makes business sense.

Why pay workers X amount of money when suckers will watch low quality streaming?

This is such BS... they changed the price from $8.99 for unlimited streaming and 1 DVD at time to $9.99 over a year ago. I said to myself that sucks but it's just $1 extra a month... ok I can deal with that.

Now your telling me you are going to charge an extra $6 a month for something I have been having for over 2 years now for a total $7 extra a month for sticking it to me and everyone else.

I would always praise Netflix and how much I love it and I really hated Blockbuster video and tired of using Redbox, I definitely plan on going back to both locations for my movie rental and probably will cancel Netflix all together. The Netflix streaming collection of video sucks and trying to screw all of us by keep raising the prices and your Chief officer gimmick comments are not going to fool me.

Who knows, I might even give Hulu a try and see how that works out.

BTW - if you try to call Netflix right now, you can't even get a ringtone and their website says waiting time is 17 minutes. I guess I'm not the only person out there who is pissed off from the Netflix email we just received about their hike price change.

**UPDATE**
I finally got a hold of a representative after finally getting a ringtone and being on hold forever and the person I spoke to said it's been crazy because a lot of people are voicing their opinions about the price increase. I even told them that I plan on canceling my subscription to Netflix after being a member for 2 years.

Someone has to take a stand, last year they raised it $1 extra month (no big deal), this year $6 extra month, next year will be what... $10 extra a month. I'm tired of these people taking advantage and keep increasing their prices.

I switched to the "Streaming only" plan about two months ago. Redbox is on the corner, so it just made sense for me to save a little since my Netflix DVDs usually sat unwatched for weeks at a time anyway.

... find a agreement to stream some of the cable channels (Spike, History, Discover, CNN, FoxNews, MSNBC, and more)!
Release new DVDs over streaming.

Id drop DirecTV and pay up to $30 bucks a month even with some reduced quality.

1912.7.2011 17:12

I have DTV. Show me where I can find the Speed channel, Military channel, Comedy central, ESPN 1 and 2.. The list goes on and on.
Satellite video and audio quality is second to none.
Jeff

2012.7.2011 17:39

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm out.
Streaming sounds good on paper, but the HD stuff is not HD and there's no surround sound, usually and I HATE streaming! If I could get a Local copy to be played later then fine.
Netflix has been groundbreaking and I've been very happy with them. But they just priced themselves out of my market. It's just not worth that cost for me. Maybe for others, but not for me.

Thank you Netflix. It's been fun.

2112.7.2011 17:41

Bad move since they don't get new movies til 2 to 3 weeks later while blockbuster get new releases on the same day it comes out of dvd even though it cost more than Netflix.

I think if you own a PS3 5.1 is available. I'm not a big enough gamer to justify purchasing a console even if it has a Blu-ray player.

I play racing games on my PC using a Logitech G25. Not quite like racing my car but close enough.

No PS3 or other console for me. I'm an XBMC user on my Windows PC. I was considering getting a Roku player but it would pretty much only be for Netflix.
I just don't see the need right now. I can get pretty much anything I want to watch and I have a very large library. Netflix was really only to fill holes.
Netflix is great for what they are. But streaming is only good if it is your only choice.

Your reasoning makes sense but that could only be profitable if they can match their streaming catalog with their dvds. If they strictly went to streaming with their current catalog I'd imagine they wouldn't be in business for very much longer.

Another hurdle is streaming availability. Ruling out the computer and phones (since I think its safe to assume the average consumer does not wish to sit in front of a computer or squint at a phone screen especially those with families.) Your limited to game consoles and newer blu-ray players for a streaming service to be of any true value. You could connect your pc/phone to your tv but again I believe those consumers are in the minority.

All this is really moot anyways because I firmly believe exclusive digital distribution is inevitable, although far in the future.

2612.7.2011 20:26

That's why I said eventually. Can't really put a date stamp on it. With Sony and other movie distributors dictating when Netflix can set in stone a release date of current movies, the hand writing is on the wall.

I liked Netflix for what it was in 1996. I was a subscriber from that year until four months ago. It is my option to stay on board or kick Netflix to the curb.

Seems the new price structure has raised some questions from users if it is worth it or not.

With Netflix's huge users base they could give a crap about what people think. Fine, I exercised my right to cancel them.

i love Netflix... dont really know what next, but really unhappy with this change... Will wait and see, will be looking for other options, thought i wouldnt say this but maybe is time to go back to cable or satellite.

2812.7.2011 21:48

I just purchased a Roku XDS box about two weeks ago from Amazon.com Looks like I will be returning it tomorrow. It's OK, and works, but some video's stop and start again, some are blurry, others are excellent. The movie selection is limited so I can't see that paying extra for the service is justified. Maybe a buck or two, but certainly not twice what I pay now for one DVD out at a time.

In your case it maybe your internet ISP limiting or slow xfer rates..

The Sh*t has definitely hit the fan. i tried to call customer service to cancel my account and voice my dissatisfaction at being charged more for nothing.

Netflix isn't taking ANY calls anymore on their 24 hour customer support number 1-866-716-0414. They simply tell you in a recorded voice "they are too busy with higher than normal calls" and then tell you to "call another time"....then they hang up on you.

Now i'm really pissed off. What if i had a legitimate problem with my service? If they can't handle the wrath of the consumer...then they shouldn't have gone along with this totally stupid plot to begin with.

3112.7.2011 22:49

"The Sh*t has definitely hit the fan. i tried to call customer service to cancel my account and voice my dissatisfaction at being charged more for nothing."

You can cancel your subscription from the Netflix website.
https://www.netflix.com/
I would wait a while to verbally insult them :) Too many people are trying to do the same thing.
Jeff

3212.7.2011 23:02

Your right about streaming, although Netflix seems to crap out more than any other channel on my unit. Anyway, I might reconsider, as Roku has many other channels (More than any other streaming media player) that I like. I'll just probably dump the Netflix streaming subscription and just go back to one DVD out at a time. Thanks for the info though!

3312.7.2011 23:16

Nope, I kept calling back till I got through, the guy was hoarse probably from taking all the complaint calls. I didn't want to cancel from a computer...I wanted them to KNOW why I was leaving. It's all done now.

Why would I pay 60% more for the same service when BB blu-rays are .99 cents a night and $2.99 for new releases? And with Blockbuster I don't have to wait them to come in the mail, and I can get games, and i don't have to wait 30 days for new releases. Netflix is now at a financial disadvantage to Blockbuster. It's now cheaper to go to BB than to rent from Netflix or watch their crappy pixelated streaming service.

Facebook groups boycotting Netflix are exploding. I would imagine the guy that thought this up probably will be unemployed tomorrow.

Holy Sh*t!
Are we all so addicted to this "media" that we can't find something better to do?
Maybe we've all been sitting on our couches too long being "entertained."
The fact of the matter is that all the people b*tching here will pony up the extra money and get their media.
Netflix knows this... and your all f*cked.
Look at a group of young people sitting around hammering out text messages on their phones. They can't even carry on a conversation.
The majority, regular people, could control things again... but we are too busy being entertained.

3613.7.2011 02:54

Your actually very wrong about that. Netflix doesn't hold a monopoly on video rentals. That's their biggest mistake. If Blockbuster went totally out of business and Redbox never existed then, and only then would people "have" to "pony up the extra money" But what sucks for Netflix is people have options. So what Netflix really did is corporate suicide.

Nobody is so addicted to media that they would bend over and take in the arse from Netflix when there are tons of better/cheaper options available. I think they are "assuming" people will but putting your whole company at risk over an assumption is about the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

I know it sounds completely stupid jooky, but lets see what happens. I'll bet the money they make from this outweighs the few subscribers who give them the finger. People in general are creatures of habit, and we've been taught well.
No where in my comment did I say netflix had a monopoly, I was making an observation about the convenience, and a persons reluctance to change. Its been happening to people for generations, once you get comfortable even if antagonized, you'll stay where your at.

This was enough for me to cancel. And I did and went to BlockBuster and rented 2 Blu-rays and a game it cost me $9. One of the movies Netflix won't even have to rent till the middle of next month. They really screwed the pooch. Not sure if you are on Face book....but Cancel Netflix FB pages are filling up fast.

I totally get what you mean how people are total "Sheeple" and they get into something and stick with it because it's easy. But this is not something that is that easy. It's just as convenient and easy to drive to Blockbuster or hit up a Redbox as it is to do Netflix...and you get instant satisfaction. I think it will be more disastrous to Netflix than you think, but we'll see.

4013.7.2011 07:53

I find this unacceptable. I have been a subscriber since 2003. What I do not like is not only is the streaming not that great at times, but movies that were HD are not always on streaming HD. Plus, I have to pay extra to get BR. Really?

I know for sure I will not continue with streaming and I will voice my opinion soon, after the first wave of pi$$ed people call.

I will not cancel my disc delivery though.

4113.7.2011 09:26

Well if you guys are so unsatisfied with netflix new pricing strategy I suggest you spend your money on a decent vpn service instead and then torrent all the movies and tv shows you could want. There are some decent vpn services out there for 10 bucks or less :)

Actually, I would be willing to pay, say $12 a month, for Netfux if they streamed new releases with roughly 5 minutes of commercials that you COULD NOT fast forward through, and 1 minute of commercials you COULD NOT fast forward through if you pause/stop, then resume the movie. To me this makes sense as they would be able to gain additional funding through advertisement, gain more content and be able to provide MORE original programming. A little bit of commercial is worth it to me. Honestly, would you actually sit there watching them, or would you just do something else for 5 minutes?

4313.7.2011 11:58

This doesn't seem fair to subscribers.

Hmm..Im surprised KillerBug hasn't voiced his opinion on all this, especially with all his boasting about nexflix is the best. Not that I'm saying it is or isn't but I thought I'd see a comment from him by now.

With this stupid move made by Netflix, they might just become the next "Hollywood Video" that files for Chapter 11 in the next year or two.

I'm surprise they didn't creep up the price slowly like they did last year with the $1 increase for single DVD and just raise it up $1-$2 this year, but instead they raised it straight to $6 this year... wow they got balls.

If you are one of the lucky ones like me who actually got hold of a Netflix representative on the phone, I asked them why do they increase the price year after year. Her response was, "We really see the Streaming and actual DVD copy being a separate thing, so that is why we charge it separately."

I then asked her, "Are you serious, you guys just woke up and realize this now, why didn't you do something like this years back, why should I pay extra for something I already have... I'll tell you why, because you are just doing a Marketing scam and think people won't go back to BlockBuster or Redbox."

I'm going to make a prediction what Netflix will do next after the wave of phone calls they are receiving from all of us piss off users and message board forums that are blowing up. They will send an email stating that we have increase our library selection for Streaming by adding more New Releases to our catalogs. We all know they are just going to add New Release movies that no one cares about or that goes straight to rental. In other words it's going to be another Marketing gimmick they are going to pitch and some people will fall for it, but I'm tired of the games they are playing.

If you are going to increase your prices every year, then offer a more incentive for us to stay with you... don't increase the price and nothing for us to benefit out of it other than filling your pockets with our money.

Hmmm...hard to say because I am not one to rewatch old movies much so would be buying only for the new releases. Prob cheaper to just buy the DVDs as they come out...

Far as cutting cable? Hell no! Not by a long shot! My family watches tons of stuff on TV and new stuff comes out all the time. Movies are a small percentage of what I watch. Unless you meant cut out movie channels like HBO,,,I could see someone doing that. I don't think they are worth the $10 a month either though...

4713.7.2011 13:46

When Netnuts upped their subscription on me $6 and tapped my bank account without my permission; which is how they glean their funds I know, I immediately put a halt to the whole thing. They didn't give me more than a weeks notice. Just plopped it in my lap & had me grab my ankles.

Sure, it was only $6 bucks, but look where they have taken it now. Not that I'm any kind of soothsayer either, but I too saw this coming. Looks to me like the 'mom & pop' video shops might be having a comeback after all.

As for video streaming? That service can place its lips firmly upon upon my bulbous keister & make with the artificial flatulence.

4813.7.2011 14:08

Costs "much" more?

Only if you're on a current cheapskate plan.

I currently have the primo plan (3 + streaming) and am only seeing a $4-5 change. Not happy, but it's not as big a deal to me as those on the bottom plan.

Smart to separately price the mailer and streaming plans. That way, they can be priced according to the market for two very different services and manage costs for each operation separately.

How can you say that's smart to separate it when we have had it this way for years. If it was so smart they would have done this a long time ago.

The only solely purpose for this is to gain profit and probably to get people off of hard copy of DVD's. I'm sure they would rather eliminate their employees stuffing DVD's for us users, which means more profit for them because they could just focus on Streaming. To keep their cost down, they have to keep increasing extra charges onto us consumers.

Sure some people can afford Netflix to keep raising their prices, but I'm tired of prices going up and the economy is still down. If they see that people are just willing to go with their new price increase, then the jacka** that sits around the office will just increase again the next 2-3 fiscal quarters.

How does it feel to have the Eiffel Tower shoved up your ass?
I for one saw it coming. That's why I cancelled my Netfux account four months ago.
Quiet is kept, this latest increase is just the beginning. Now that Netfux has such a huge user data base, the powers at be can just blow people off.

Like I said I was a member since 1996.. Not anymore............
Jeff

5113.7.2011 14:58

I was a member since 2003 & had the $50 full bird plan till it flew up my arse... Haven't had Netnuts for going on 6 month and don't miss it in the slightest. My moronic 20 something knows more than I do though (has his own plan on his PS3) & I can't tell him black from white (like he knows the difference between pussy & corn flakes)... his money & already he's finding that he can't get the movies he wants either. Same arguments the folks have here.

Funny how the world works that way...

5213.7.2011 19:13

If I were still a Netflix customer this would probably drive me to cancel. I had the five dvd and streaming plan and had to cancel because it wasn't convenient enough for me. I had to remember to send my dvds back in time to get new releases sent out on time. the streaming quality just wasn't good enough. They didn't have the movie selection I was looking for along with the new dvd releases. Now I just use Directv on demand. I can rent new release movies when I want. It costs more but it's about getting what I want. If Netflix could do the same thing I would have Netflix.

It is amazing how many Netflix customers have either cancelled their accounts or are threatening to.
It has become a worldwide general hate for Netflix.
Trying to justify the increasing costs for paying off the movie industry and their paltry collection of streaming costs is bullshit.

The only show I streamed was Weeds due to Weeds being a Showtime production and Califonication staring David Duchovny. Other then then that I've either watched what is available or not interested on what Netflix has to offer. The video quality is not that great. No 5.1 for anything other than a PS3. Hmmm, who distributes the PS3? Sony of course. They don't make the console in the first place.

Well I just lowered my bill $2. I never streamed anyway. The movies for streaming were the pits. Put the new movies on streaming 'cause you sure can NOT get them for weeks on DVD.

The big question is: Has Netflix done anything to improve their service and/or help consumers with their montly spending? NO. Then how can they justify their new renting plans? THEY CAN'T.

Has Netflix invested in creating their own private network, so that streaming subscribers can recieve Netflix signal independent from any ISP? NO, why invest when they can exploit ISP's bandwidth, for their own benefit without paying a cent for it. Has Netflix come to some agremment with ISPs to remove bandwidth caps and overage fees? NO, they don't care if subscribers spend more for Internet monthly, nor that ISP want to monetize internet.

If Netflix cared, they would have lowered prices for streaming and/or encourage consumers to request more DVDs/Blu-rays monthly, so you decrease downstream monthly consumption, therefore spending less money monthly for internet. Instead of that, if you want both streaming and DVDs/Blu-rays, you have to pay more. GREEDY.

Has Netflix done anything to improve audiovisual quality for streaming? NO, actually they admit will be compressing it more, resulting in a fussier pixelated picture with average sound. Has Netflix done anything to increase their streaming availible titles or add day-to-date new releases? NO. Then why would anybody even consider keeping such defficient service? For me would be 8 bucks monthly flushed down the drain.

If you're all smart, you better off not using Netflix streaming at all, and saving extra money from ISPs overcharging for internet, while renting solely DVDs and Blu-rays, after all both provide audiovisual quality superior than streaming. Thankfully you have more choices to rent DVDs/Blu-rays at your convenience, so if Netflix's new DVDs and Blu-ray plans aren't good enough for you, you can go to RedBox or Blockbuster for your rentals.

I do hope your right. I have had a subscription to netflix off and on in the past, but cancelled when the newer releases where delayed for a month. Although I'm a bit skeptical of it happening, it would be very nice to see this bite them in the a$$.

Red box is looking good... and it's cheaper. I will keep the streaming and red box my dvd's.

The only problem with that is the commercial time would quickly balloon to 20 or 30 percent of the veiwing time just like what has happened with TV. And for crying out loud, isn't there enough advertisement in the movies themselves! Some movies play more like an infomercial with all the ridiculous product placement.

Netflix has been a great service that I enjoyed for several years. While it is true that I was beginning to stream more and enjoy the DVD service less, I still needed the DVDs to get the latest movies. Unfortunately, I can not justify a 60% increase in price so I am going to go with their 100% reduction in cost. So long Netflix it was a good ride.

6115.7.2011 10:32

The 3x plan plus streaming did go up by $2 which was not as bad however it did put me on the fence to start looking for options.

We do use streaming service a lot for cell phones and other devices. I don't really want super high quality on a cellphone as well it is a small screen (about 4" or so), however when on the bus or waiting in an office, etc it is worth it.

The one thing I have been rethinking though is cancelling the DVD by mail service and considering other options like the redbox kiosks.

This is the 2nd increase in 2 years, anymore increases and I may be pushed over the fence.

6215.7.2011 10:41

As a home built HTPC user for 7 years I have found I no longer utilize the DVD side of my subscription. I have pretty much gone to purely internet sources for my viewing. Boxee has been a great assist in this. Over all i would have to say Netflix has found a way to save me 2 bucks a month, or short change themselves how ever you wish to look at it. Be interesting to see what the future brings.

I've been with NetFlix for six and a half years, I get 8 DVD's at a time, and I have never used the streaming. My bill was reduced by a nice chunk of change.

6515.7.2011 11:40

Just heard on TV local news this morning that Blockbuster is offering "angry Netflix users" 1 Month of FREE rentals if you can prove you are a Netflix user by either showing your red DVD envelope or an email from Netflix.

Now that is a good incentive to switch over and forget about Netflix all together and let them become the next "Hollywood Video" and file for bankruptcy in the next upcoming years.

6615.7.2011 11:42

Well, looks like I'm back to just Netflix DVDs.

I see no reason to pay extra $ for streaming when the selection is 95% nostalgia movies, 4% TV shows that i never watch even when aired on free TV, and 1% current movies that were box office failures.

I agree with the theory that Netflix will eventually stream everything and shut down their hardcopy shipping division. When that happens, I'll likely just switch my movie rental focus to DirecTV PPV or maybe add on a movie channel. I'm sure that when Netflix gets permission to stream more current movies that HBO, Showtime, etc will also get earlier access to those same movies.

Frankly, I'm surprised at how long the DVD and especially BluRay rental business has lasted, because it kept me out of the theaters. Back in the day of VHS tapes I used to watch a lot more movies in theaters because tape quality movies suck. If only low-res streaming is available, I will likely start watching more movies in theaters again. Now? I can rent a BluRay movie for chump change and watch is it in inexpensive comfort of my own home theater with my own snacks and drinks. I can understand why the movie industry would still sell DVDs/BluRays for $30, but I don't understand why they're still renting them out because they're losing money on people like me.

I look at this as the beginning of the end for Netflix. I'm in a tech career, so I've been a Netflix customer since about 4 months after they opened the service, and most of my friends/coworkers/family use Netflix. None of them (including me) are going to pay extra/separately for the streaming service. It was fine when it was "free", but otherwise I have zero interest in it.

6715.7.2011 11:42

Well, I cancelled the dvd 1 at a time and am now just going to do the streaming and see how that goes. I really added the dvd option because my son wanted to see a certain movie. and then I just ordered movies that I wanted to see, but don't feel compelled to keep ordering movies. I do enjoy some of the movies and tv shows I am able to stream, and really prefer that we don't watch too much anyhow. I am disappointed by the price increase, but do understand that Netflix probably has good reason to increase prices, unfortunately for us consumers.

Correction, this is actually the 2nd increase within 1 year. They increased the price $1 extra last year... although it wasn't much but it was a increase, and this year they increase $6. So within 1 year they increased the price $7 a month.

6915.7.2011 12:04

when i first heard about this i was like "you gotta be kidding me" considering i only just joined 1 month ago.

Then i realized i have nothing to worry about as far as prices b/c MY price remained the same.... $7.99 for streaming.

For ALL the a**holes on here who keep trying to put down the folks that stream ONLY... kiss my A**. I don't want hard copies of any thing. I don't want to drop stuff off in a mailbox. AND i don't watch movies that way. I am very random with it... so i prefer to just have it on my queue.

On the other hand, i can definitely agree with the fact that the quality is sh*tty and the movie selection is a travesty. But i don't want hard copies b/c i never know what i want to watch at any exact time.

Everyone can be opinionated but the only one you need to put down is Netflix... for being a**holes while at the same time doing what EVERY for-profit entity does in this capitalistic country. It sucks. If you like dvds only, great. If you like streaming only, great. If you like both, i'm very sorry.

Peace.

Although, since they've done this, I could save by dropping the streaming entirely. I don't use it often enough to justify. I'll have to consider this.

Honestly, I don't think this effected me much at all. I see the option to save money now :p

It's such a large percentage increase for some of us. I am constantly trying to leverage the best combination of entertainment on my fixed income. This increase is just going to make me reevaluate my choices again. Netflix might still be the best deal, but the increase will force me to cut something else. BYW ... NO MORE FREE ADVERTISING FOR NETFLIX. They will have to pay me for referrals effective immediately, like DirecTV.

Hogwash! The ONLY reason we still order DVDs is because so many selections in the Netflix streaming catalog are listed as "DVD-ONLY" . Netfix should realize theres a huge difference between "wanting" DVDs and having no other choice. If this is how Netflix rewards customer loyalty, one can only hope that what they think will be good for the bottom line will instead hurt them. The Redbox & Blockbuster kiosks are suddenly looking much more attractive.

NO!....it's not. Please read the FINE PRINT, as the 'unlimited' is really a tiered offer. Unlimited 1 at a time is not my idea of unlimited. I'm baling ship as soon as my current month is over. I loved the streaming, despite the buffering issues with a fast connection. I knew this day was coming

7916.7.2011 19:57

Well mine IS cheaper :p There's no denying it. It just is. I can even save if I desire to drop certain options :p

I don't need to read the fine print. Last month was 64.99, next month is 60.98...

No problems here with fast connection buffering mine works seamlessy, no problems.

There is a limited 1 DVD tier and 1 at a time unlimited which makes sense to me.

dude, I literally laughed out loud. Netfux, haha!

Yeah, these guys are following the Blockbuster method. Changing the rules for existing members. No one is grandfathered in anymore. If your going to change the rules make it effective for new customers. This is why I dropped blockbuster. I got rid of Netfux months ago when I started spending my dough on Redbox. F them. Consumers really need to believe that companies NEED customers, not the other way around.
Their streaming selection is garbage anyway. I literally get the shakes when browsing the low-budget amateur movies they offer.

Well, I just checked out the BlockBuster deal....it's going to take 5-6 days to get my first two DVDs and 3-4 days JUST TO SHIP (meaning, that doesn't count the transit time from my mailbox to BlockBuster's distribution centers) for every DVD after that...?

Netflix DVDs have a 2-day turn around from the time they leave my mailbox to the time another one is delivered. I'll just stick with Netflix 3 DVD service and cancel streaming.

Man, the movie rental industry has completely gown down the $hitter! Then they wonder why pirating is at an all-time high...?

8318.7.2011 17:54

Hmm, I tried blockbuster once upon a time. Their shipping hub closest to me was ~180miles away. It averaged 2 days to them, and 2 days to me. But getting the new releases was trying. Although I may have figured out the loophole. I only gave them a shot, because they had a dvd that netflix did not. Haven't had the need to try them again. Guess I'm loyal to netflix. Though I really don't like the one month delay on some of the new releases ;) Which is where the local video store comes in handy ;)
