More DivX support for consumer electronics

The DivX Networks are working hard to make their MPEG-4 video compression codec an industry standard. They have now signed a deal with India based Ittiam corp., in order to produce DivX compliant portable devices using a Texas Instruments platform. The planned DivX supporting products include digital cameras and video cameras as well as other portable devices.

BANGALORE, INDIA and SAN DIEGO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 06/26/2003 -- Ittiam Systems and DivXNetworks, Inc., the company that created the revolutionary, patent-pending DivX� video compression technology, today announced a partnership to deliver solutions that will enable DivX Certified digital still camera (DSC), digital video camera (DVC) and portable products in time for the 2003 holiday season. The target platform for this range of digital video products is the TMS320DM270 from Texas Instruments, an official DivX Certified partner company. In the future, solutions will be available on a wider range of platforms depending on the application and market demand.

Hard to see it happen that DivX would replace DV in digital camcorders as the perfect quality always wins hands down the amount of data per storage unit when speaking of "capturing memories" -- at least for me. I can't seriously imagine anyone owning 4Mpix or better digital camera of using it constantly at 1Mpix/aggressive compression mode and I think it is a pretty good comparision to this one. Then again, miniMV is already making its way.. Anyway, one things is sure: resolution will grow, quality of video will grow and ultimately at some point I think that virtually all lossy compression specs will pretty much disappear once we get to the point when its reasonable to use lossless video and audio compression (i.e. storage and bandwidth is so ridiculously cheap compared to current situation that it doesn't make sense to compress). I agree completely, lossless is the method of the future. Storage will only ever get cheaper and cheaper so compression shouldnt be needed as bit rates get higher and higer for the recorded formats. With Digital Cameras and camcorders, the amount of data stored isnt the only consideration. There is only a maximum optimal usage for the lenses they use, so everything will end up being replaced. We may even see Blue laser technology in camcorders in 5 years or so. Who knows....??
