Sony lists PS3-compatible older titles

Sony lists PS3-compatible older titles Sony Corp. has moved to soften worries about backwards compatibility issues in the European PlayStation 3 (PS3) console, set to launch in PAL territories on Friday. The hardware (emotion engine) that provided support for PS2 titles was removed and replaced with a software emulation solution instead. Sony had previously said the console will support 1000 older titles at launch.
"If your game is not listed here, emulation is not yet supported on PlayStation 3," The backwards compatibility website, which can be found here, reads. "We will be adding additional titles to this list in future firmware upgrades," added David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment.

get your facts straight please b/c God of war 2 works perfectly on european ps3. And yes, ps1 is still supported.

As of now, 72% of all PAL PlayStation 2 titles will run on the PlayStation (1,782 games out of the 2,451 titles that were released).

PlayStation 2
Total games: 2,451**
Total games working: 1,782 (72.7% of all games) (Google Docs Spreadhsheet)

* No known issues: 1,093 (61.34% of working games)
* Minor issues: 254 (14.25% of working games)
* Noticeable issues: 435 (24.41% of working games)

1,093 PS2 titles without issues. That's between the 1000 - 1200 mark promised. They got there.

Technical problems

Sony has published a website which contains a list of all older games that will work on the PS3 and states if there are any known technical problems when playing the titles.

There are three levels of compatbility for the games that will play - no known issues, some minor issues and noticeable issues.

Recent PS2 titles such as Pro Evolution Soccer 6, God of War II, Final Fantasy XII and Fifa 07 will play but there are likely to be some technical glitches.

Classic games such as Ico, Metal Gear Solid 3 and Grand Theft Auto will also play on the new machine.

In order to play the older games, PlayStation 3 owners will have to update the console's system software, called firmware, either online or via a disk.

More than 115 million PlayStation 2 consoles have been shipped worldwide, and almost two million of its successor were shipped between its launch and the end of December. More than one million PS3 will be available for the European launch.

The link said there may be glitches not there are glitches in GOW2.I was willing to bet that this game was going to run smooth with all PS3 systems its a major title.

I'm not buying a ps3 until it can be modded and all my ps2 games can be played on it.

Sony needs to get their act together.
