SanDisk praises new DRM-free Amazon store

This afternoon, SanDisk, in a surprising statement,
praised Amazon's DRM-free music store and EMI's support.

The company praised the "embrace of a universal format" (MP3) and said it was crucial "to establishing the digital music business."

"This is the first time a major record label and a major retailer have come together to offer consumers the freedom to buy music compatible with all MP3 players," said company general VP Daniel Schreiber. "As consistent advocates of consumer choice, we believe this is an important step forward."

This recent statement contradicts SanDisk's previous comments in which CEO Eli Harari attacked Apple and Steve Jobs when he suggested a DRM-free approach for iTunes.

At that time, Sandisk claimed that music stores should not suggest changes to the way music labels offered their music. Harari suggested that "store-independent" DRM formats were a better alternative.

one step closer to slowing piracy and having consumers gain a cheap fast and legitimate way to gain music without us being told how or what to use to play the music [ + quote]

I agree AlmostOz, the sooner we get the ability to purchase DRM-free music the sooner piracy will be slowed. I would purchase music from my favorite bands online if I could get them DRM-free. [ + quote]

The only thing I am bummed out about is the fact that mp3 is now the universal format, FLAC or ogg vorbis is so much better , and open-source ! [ + quote]

Flac and Ogg Vorbis are both better for different reason but the problem is how many mp3 players out there support either? [ + quote]

MP3 format will always be the universal format cause it is playable on other devices and even in-car systems. This is great news once again it wont stop piracy but yes slow it down it will. [ + quote]

Yes, it will slow down piracy(though it will never stop it). But the others are right...mp3 is universal....Ogg Vorbis and FLAC are great, but they are not as universal as mp3...even though they are better. Now if they can get a decent price, because 99 cents compared to free is way too much, they may just have something. [ + quote] This message has been edited since posting. No No no, you guys didnt get what I was saying. I wish that mp3 never had notbecome the universal format, I wish FLAC had, that means its supported by all players and in-car systems. [ + quote]

Sandisk owns they even where in talks with roxbox or whatever that hack is to get it compatible with there e200 series ;p. Also they don't mind people using hacks to change the looks of there players. I like them a lot. [ + quote]
