PowerDVD Ultra supports NVIDIA PureVideo HD (VP2) architecture

Cyberlink Corp. has announced that its PowerDVD Ultra software, the only retail software to support playback of Blu-ray Disc, HD DVD and DVD media now has support for NVIDIA's second generation PureVideo� HD (VP2) architecture on NVIDIA's latest GeForce 8500/8600 series graphics cards.

PowerDVD Ultra uses the PureVideo hardware engine to power superior H.264 decoding technology, providing owners of NVIDIA GeForce 8500/8600 series graphics cards the benefit of dramatically reducing CPU utilization when executing high-definition video decoding and playback.

"With our ongoing collaboration with NVIDIA to drive high-definition video technology, CyberLink is now able to provide both PowerDVD Ultra and NVIDIA GeForce 8500/8600 series graphics cards users with an exceptionally smooth high-definition video decoding and playback experience," said Alice H. Chang, CEO of CyberLink Corp.

"We are ecstatic that Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra supports the new PureVideo HD processing engine on NVIDIA GeForce 8600 and GeForce 8500 graphics cards," said Scott Vouri, NVIDIA General Manager of Multimedia. Cue another round of new cards. The 8800's are due a change to incorporate this VP2 as well as the new G90 stuff. VP2 looks very very handy, I've seen reviews saying it takes CPU load down on HD content to under 10%. Incredible. It's beginning to look as if ATI are getting stuck one step behind (good as the 2900xt cards look they are not exactly a vast leap). [ + quote]

No mprh, VP2 is currently only supported by the new 8500 & 8600 Nvidia cards - even the mighty 8800 Ultra hasn't got it yet (but I expect to see new Nvidia 8900/8950 cards in the next few months with it included). Until new drivers appear (IIRC June has been mentioned) there isn't any VP2 support in Windows XP either yet. Right now it's Nivdia 8500/8600 & Vista only.
