Apple freaks out over iGasm promotion

24 May 2007 19:02 by James "Dela" Delahunty | 10 comments

Apple freaks out over iGasm promotion Apple Inc. has set its sights on high street adult retailer Ann Summers over a sex toy that is intended to be used with iPods and other MP3 players. The iGasm connects to an MP3 player and gives the user erotic vibrations in sync with the beat. Apple is furious, but not exactly at the toy itself, more-so how it is advertised.

According to the News of the World, Apple is demanding that all posters for the gadget be taken down, under threat of legal action. The neon-pink posters depict an underwear-clad female silhouette holding an oval white device with two cables, one which is connected to a pair of white headphones, the other is heading towards.... well, you get the idea!

The sales pitch encourages users to, "Go at it hard and fast with a pounding drum 'n' bass track or chill with an ambient classic." Apple's problem is with the these advertisements, claiming they are an abuse of the silhouette-based images it uses in its own advertising for its music products.

And what's wrong with that? This way people instantly associate with the iPod, and it may lead to more iPod sales in the end, maybe those who haven't considered buying one will do it now, just to use with this 'fun device' ;)

Um...I'm no marketing guru or anything, but wouldn't this be a really good thing for the sales, especially if a female doesn't have an ipod...what's she going to do...she is going to march right out, buy one, then pick up that little "toy"...

Hmmm, just can't find anything wrong with that picture...who cares about the silhouettes, since when are they copyrighted...last I checked people have been making silhouettes of themselves for years.

I agree they are bugging with this article because damn near everything on TV to the radio and internet is sold through sex. So why is this such a horrible thing.

Would Apple rather see a full color illustration of this add on? Perhaps a diagram of suggested "insertion" techniques?
