Canada introduces anti-piracy legislation

2 June 2007 19:11 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 21 comments

Canada introduces anti-piracy legislation On Friday, Canada introduced a legislation that would criminalize camcording of films in theaters and make the crime punishable by up to five years in prison.

Recently, Japan introduced a similar legislation and Mexico and the US have had legislations in place for a while. The MPAA and other groups estimate that piracy cost the movie industry $6 billion USD per year worldwide and recently Candada has been called a "haven for piracy".

"I don't want this problem of piracy to be seen as an American problem,"
said Kevin Tierney, producer of the Canadian film "Bon Cop, Bad Cop," who admitted that his movie had been bootlegged worldwide, "This is stealing."

Until Friday, it had only been illegal in Canada to camcord a movie if it was meant for commercial use. Authorities however, have had a terrible time enforcing that rule, as it is almost impossible to prove such recordings were done for commercial distribution.

Now, if you are caught recording the film, you can face up to 2 years in prison, and face 5 years if convicted of doing so for commercial distribution.

This is sad, but not really a surprise considering all the lobbying being done to Harper and his gang, that was even reported on by the Toronto Star.

Stupid MPAA and their global domination!

to be honest, can you blame them? it isnt really going agaisnt our rights as canadians, its to protect the people who make the movies... ive seen this comming for years and so did all of us, we had it easy.

Well all those Canadians can't gloat anymore about how they have it easy. This is only the beginning to the anti-piracy measures that will take place in Canada, expecially with all the lobbying going on.

This legislation should go ahead but not to the level of blocking file sharing.

That still won't stop the people from doing it. They get a rush from it and now it'll be more of a rush.

fgamer I have a lot more to "gloat" about still. ummm gee what's free medi-care?
Land of the Free in the US, well at least I can download a song without being charged a couple thousand.

medi-care dose not work I know I am on it ,the worst thing about Canada's system is the deley for surgerys and such, the US goverment needs to get off its ass and start heavily regulating the drug, insurance and health systems in the US by forcing it to be more aforldable and easier to get it will make things a lot more simple when they start up a full nationwide public health system.

sigh...sadly there is little reason for cams to be in a theater so havign a reasonable law against it is not so bad.

Well Canadians may have "free" health care, but they don't have much of a military. The U.S. could have "free" health care too..we would just have to cut some corners (axe the Special Forces program, anyone? Nah..)

Movie Piracy Claims More Fiction Than Fact

Well I'm not a Canadian and I have a lot of respect for your country. My country however is run by ignorant fuckwits who are backed by media organizations and financial institutions who control their every move. Please Canada, nuke the US, because we deserve it. k?

Not that this will actually stop cams from being released, it will only slow them a bit from Canadian sources. Looks like we'll just have to go back to stealing workprints & dvd screeners to enjoy the latest releases.

Well the Medi-care isn't much, but it is better than x number dollars it would cost going to a private clinic.

Windsong, before you start dissing our military think about how many wars the US have actually won! and hmmmm who burnt down the whitehouse back in the day.

The law is against using a camcorder to record a movie in a movie theater.....not against file sharing! Most cams suck anyway....I don;t know why so many people are upset.

There they go again misleading all of the sheeple. The majority of leaks come from the pre-release screener copies.
