SAN FRANCISCO--Aug. 16, 1999-- DVDPro Conference, San Francisco, Booth #101 -- At DVDPro today, Spruce Technologies is demonstrating powerful new media solutions made possible by using Spruce Convergence to merge the rich audio and video content of DVD with the timely interactive content of the Internet.

Spruce Convergence, an option for Spruce's DVDMaestro and DVDConductor authoring systems, is a unique Web-DVD solution that gives the author incredible freedom and flexibility to create titles that have all the rich media of DVD and the interconnectivity of the internet. Only Spruce Convergence provides full-duplex communication between DVD-based video and the Web, allowing web pages to be invoked directly by button clicks on the DVD title, as well as letting the internet browser control the DVD video.

Early customers are already discovering the benefits of Spruce Convergence for their businesses. Muzic. To (www.muzic.to) has been developing a hybrid web-DVD portal that uses Spruce Convergence to showcase their collection of music and videos at the highest video and audio quality while enabling instant online ordering through their web site.

The combination of DVD and the Web offers customers many options. Sales catalogues can be created with the highest quality video representation of products and services while simultaneously providing the user with an instant connection via the web to check current product availability and prices. Educational titles can be created merging lessons with testing. An exam can be administered after each segment of the lesson, with scores being sent to a server which then sends a key back to the user's player to unlock additional video lessons.

Spruce Convergence greatly simplifies the authoring process for web integration by allowing the author to easily embed the URL of the web content directly in the DVD title during the authoring process. This lets DVD creators enrich their titles with web connectivity without resorting to any web programming whatsoever. As a result, authors can spend their time focussing on developing the title, rather than struggling with technical issues.

In a related demonstration, Spruce is also showing Spruce DVDonCD(TM). This feature of Spruce's DVDMaestro and DVDConductor authoring systems allows DVD content to be recorded on low cost CD-R and CDROM. These titles are playable on most high-performance PC's, even those without a DVDROM player.

Together, Convergence and DVDonCD provide authors with a solution for delivering web-enriched DVD titles that can be distributed and replayed on the over 100 million PC's that are ready for high quality video playback and internet access.
