Japanese consumers prefer Wii

Written by James Delahunty @ 30 May 2006 8:16 User comments (59)

Japanese consumers prefer Wii According to a survey by Famitsu magazine, Japanese consumers are anticipating Nintendo's Wii console much more than Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3). Readers voted the PS3 release date and pricing information as the biggest news to come out of this years E3, but 88.4% believe the price is far too high for a gaming console. Only 10.9% believe the price is about right and a mere 0.7% actually believe the PS3 price tag is too low.
A huge 68% of respondents revealed they are most interested in the Nintendo Wii console. The support for PS3 is crawling behind at 21% and Xbox 360 received support from 7% of the respondents. The remainder expressed most interest in the Nintendo DS handheld console. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was the most popular game to be shown at E3, followed by Final Fantasy XIII, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Super Smash Bros.

The launch and price details of the PS3 revealed at E3 sparked a worldwide debate of whether the cost was just too much for a gaming console. Over and over again, Sony and PlayStation fanboys have argued that the cost is acceptable mostly because of the included Blu-ray disc drive. The argument is understandable; a stand-alone Blu-ray player would set you back $1,000+ in the United States.

However, being that the PS3 is a gaming console, it is obvious it is being eagerly awaited simply for its gaming capabilities and not because it includes a Blu-ray player. Many gamers are unhappy with how the console war and the next generation DVD format war have been forced together. The debate over the PS3 price will continue right up to launch, but considering the source of fans the "PlayStation" brand has - it shouldn't have a negative effect on initial sales.

Many have claimed that Nintendo stole the show at E3 this year however, proving that advancements in graphics can take a back seat to innovation. The Wii controller generated so much interest at E3 the waiting time to try it out ran into several hours quickly. Of course, the Wii console will also cost much less than the PS3.

Well, this is interesting considering that a few months ago, Japanese consumers were more worried about harddrive space than fancy-dancy controllers. It will get interesting in the US. I still can't wait for this system to appear.

"Many gamers are unhappy with how the console war and the next generation DVD format war have been forced together."- Not by Nintendo or Microsoft they haven't.

Yep I must admit, awhile back I was shaking my head at Nintendo but now just like pretty much everybody else, I'm really looking forward to it and will be getting one. Even the PS3 I was thinking of getting, but not anymore. I wish that they would do what MS did and sell an external seperately, or even do different packages one with and one without. It just pisses me off that they're trying to jam the Blu-ray player down my throat. SONY, I DON'T WANT IT!

I hope Nintendo does well, above all the companies I think they "care" the most about gamming. The only reason I would get a PS3 would be for Metal Gear Solid 4, but then again there is the "Walmart Swap Magic Trick!" I think that SONY has gone way too far with a $600.00 price tag and I would love to see us all band together and not buy it until it drops in price! I for one am getting a Wii/Revolution and maybe even a 360 or (P)rice(S)hitty(3) some day when the price drops. I would like to see the Japanese welcome more of the Xbox stuff, xenophobic people that they are. GO NINTENDO GO

I think the Wii will smash PS3.Just take a look at it's controller!! Here goes PS3 trip to hell. As said above, go nintendo go.

Awhile back I was thinking WTF is Nintendo doing but after everything settled they look like winners. Also the fact you can use your old Gamecube controllers on the Wii is great saves me tons a money and gives the whining least reason to bitch.

actually, the new Wii contollers are so great that you won't want to keep the old Gamecube controllers, plus, Games like tennis games, sword games...will be made to be used by the Wii controller.

Here's the thing that bugs me about the Wii. Sometimes I like to go on long video game binges. I can go for like 6 to 7 hours at a time on a new videogame that just came out if not longer. You can do that with standard controllers today without much trouble (or until your eyes bleed) but can you do that with the Wii? I mean if you just get Zelda can you really go that long before getting tired? The way my schedule works out I play long amounts of time a few times a week. It'd be nice if the Wii could have some alternative button to get the same function other than flipping it around.

At least we know now that its a worldwide issue about the price.

@ MrToast youre an idiot, yes the price tag is 600 but your getting a Blu-ray player included you moron, that already is pricing for 1000 without for just the Blu-ray player. Think about it if the 360 is at 400 now for the premium whats the hd player going to cost? probably 200 so its going to be around the same. Either way, you WILL have to choose a side unless the public rejects both hd dvd and Blu-ray which i highly doubt.

1130.5.2006 14:54

joniskaos... maybe you should take your imature self to a gaming forum to flame on people. The guy was voicing his opinion. Theres no need to call people names. Oh and yes if you buy a hd player add on for the 360 it will cost almost as much as the PS3 but thats if you want to buy it. Sony is forcing us to buy it. We dont have a choice with sony. We have a choice with nintendo and microsoft

1230.5.2006 15:27

joniskaos by flaming other people for no reason you make yourself seem like an idiot. I think alot people when they buy a gaming console *grasp* buy it because want to play games on it. I dont know of one single person that uses there current system to play DVDs. They're inferior in every way to standalone DVD ex: my Ps2 stink compared to the 40 apex sitting right next to it.joniskaos rant some more I sure you'll persuade people into dropping 600 dollars on Ps3 by calling them idiots.

[but "your" getting a Blu-ray player]-> your? maybe you're? [that already is pricing for 1000]-> er what? 1000 what? [Think about it" "if the 360 is at "400" ]-> there you go! ["whats" the "hd" player going to cost? probably 200 ]-> you mean what's the HD: "200" what dude? [you "WILL" have to choose]-> uh, no I dont. It's nice that the PS3 has a blue-ray, but with HD-DVD one of the two will be fazed out.So I'm not to certain it's worth paying 600 dollars for a PS3.It going to end up like the VHS and BETA war for preference. We'll have to see if blue-ray will last in the years.I will give sony credit for the cell processors. It will be an awesome system. The wii will succeed in price, but will be dependant on it's genere of games to succeed as a competing system.I will buy a wii only based on it's price but if the games suck i'll sell it and it won't be a big loss. But it looks to be a good system.

Toast and Joan you are both idiots stop the silly flame war. As far as im concerned sony has already lost the console war. I think the 360 wins out with the wii in second. only console i'm getting is the 360 which i already own. 600 bucks is to much for a console. and although the controller for the wii is very innovative, does't do it for me. my god how hard would sports games be to play with that thing. especially madden.

i know this is going to sound bad but i'm not buying the ps3 or 360 and not intrested in the w11. Why not? well i have a ps2 and i'm happy going to local second hand shop and buying a good game for 10euro.yea the graphics may not be as great but there value for money and thats what i want i dont want to fork out a small fourtine for a system and they pay 70 euro for a game that might be rubbish its going to be a long time until the system prices come down but i'm happy waiting

Hell becuse of it I've gain some respect for MS 0-o

Well; I'm glad the name calling is over, lol. As a side note, one person, who I'm not naming, because I'm not here to get into it with anyone, mentioned something very interesting to me. They mentioned that one of the two new formats has to win, because the public rejecting both of them is unlikely...... Let's all think about this for a second. ....Why? Why is it so unlikely? I've got a 42" sony HDTV, but I only know three other people who have them. One is known to be spoiled rich, the others are really dedicated to home stereo equipment. The point is, I know a LOT of people. And only a few even HAVE HDTVs. Not to mention, I don't think they are all even interested in improving upon DVD resolution. Just because some of us have HDTVs, and enjoy the higher resolutions, doesn't mean that the general public is ready to pay more money for a new unit just to view higher res movies. The majority of people don't even have tv sets that will look any different. For the first time here, I actually have to wonder if EITHER format will really take hold. My point here is that the public is less than 5% absorbed into current HD standards; why would they be interested in getting a media player that will look the same? I don't care if it's a gaming rig AND a player; it's $600 of 'looks the same to me' for the vast section of consumers. That goes for Blu-ray and HD-DVD. I myself, am interested; but new formats don't always take. Just look at Laserdisc. Not to mention Sony's UMD, which most major film companies have decided to release less than 2% of their films on now. I'm curious about how all this will go; but it may not actually change how most people watch their movies. After all, if you've got a regular television, are you goign to pay $600(Or even $1000) to watch movies that you pay more for than a regular DVD which you already have and looks the same on your television set? Why would someone do that? It's an interesting predicament that has appearred. Either way, Sony has recently insulted their customer base; and I'm not buying for a long time. I plan to pick up a Wii, it's cheaper and looks innovative. And I'm perfectly happy with the mainstream fix I get between my old xbox and my 360. I had all three of the systems from the old race; and eventually I plan to do the same this time. I jsut don't plan to get PS3 for a WHILE.

2731.5.2006 15:12

handsom Lazer disc and UMD are no where near BR ,so you cant realy use the old sony crapy format song, the only downside to BR is paying sony for the use of it. Sony did slap its fans only the fan boys enjoy tobe used like that, tell if my ideas would be fisable 1.Low end PS3 no BR for 299 2.No low end,High end at 499 I'll bow to your wisdome on them :3

2831.5.2006 17:58

I don't understand why it's always about some sort of "war"? Why is it so important that one console is on top? The Wii, as I see it, is going to be offering some pretty damn unique and fun gameplay at a great price point, while the 360 and PS3 are going to be offering high detailed and realistic gaming experiences. (Though I have to say, it *is* unfortunate that the PS3 is jamming Blu-ray down our throats... I don't plan on buying an HDTV set any time soon.) The odds of one of these consoles "winning" and causing another to go under in the first year are pretty damn slim. Even though Nintendo was the underdog after the SNES, they're still around and still providing us with a fun and unique gameplay experiences. Who cares who has the most sales? Am I having fun? Yes? That's all I care about... (Personally, at the moment, I'm considering the Wii60 option the most realistic for my budget and gameplay... especially if there is an XBOX360 price drop early next year...)

@360addikt Already, your name proves to be bias towards the PS3. Yes, Sony has bundled the Blu-Ray player with the new PS3 to subject us to the new generation of DVD format, but hasn’t Microsoft always saturated itself in the market by becoming a Monopoly? Look at the new PDAs that have Windows Mobile OS. So we should boycott all PDAs that include MSM(msftmobile because Microsoft is forcing people to use MSM, because they like a certain PDA? If you wanted to transfer videos, pictures, and music to the Xbox 360, it requires MS Media Center Edition, so you tell me, is it not a win-win situation if you get the PS3 with Blu-ray, even if you don’t use it, you’re still getting a $400 knockoff from what Blu-ray players are priced at now. @plutonash Although he is voicing his opinion, MrToast seems to be forgetting a key factor in the PS3s price in his post stating that the PS3 will have the Blu-ray player, thus creating an illusion that it as a waste of money if it was just for the system. Theoretically speaking, if the PS3 lacked the Blu-ray, why would someone buy Box A for $600, rather than Box B for $400? There is comparison between the PS3 w/ Blu-ray and the Xbox 360 w/out the HD DVD player console price, therefore making it skewed to people who do not know that the PS3 has a Blu-ray player. @mrfagtoast Number one, don't attack me

Nintendo has survived because of its solid performance through out the decades and what is “uneeded console power on us with out working on the qauilty of the games” As consoles progress and gain this “unneeded console power” the quality of graphics will also evolve. @ handsom

UMD is a whole different category than Blu-ray. UMDs purpose was to enable people who owned psp to be able to watch films. You cannot compare the two. Laserdisc are still used today by karaoke places and what not. So why don’t you comment back when you have something that’s closely related then do a Venn diagram and tell me what you found.

Why would a person need a HDTV? you do realize that HDTV is old technology and its been out for a very long while. It is just that now its more accessable to the general public. And I really don’t give a shit if you know a lot of people. Obviously televison mafactures wouldn’t release HDTV sets if there were no demands. There are very few but some HDTV channels anywho such as FOX, and CBS. So would would a person need to purchase an over price HDTV set if there are not to many channels that broadcast it in that type of quality. There is a BIG difference between plugging in an xbox to a normal televison and plugging an xbox 360 into the same tv. So are you preaching to us that the only way to play games and to experience quality difference is to buy your HDTV? And I actually wonder if YOU have any friends or “know” people at all @arl0oj

321.6.2006 07:51

As far as a non Blu-ray edition. I don't see that as being possible. They have shared that they intend to use it for games. Games that won't fit onto a DVD anymore, because there is too much data. You could argue dual releases in both formats; but that would only divide fans even more. As for a $499 price tag; maybe in a couple years. Regarding the lauch price, Sony has spoken, and when they talk price, they tend to stick with it.

Quote:
Lazer disc and UMD are no where near BR ,so you cant realy use the old sony crapy format song
Apparently, this went right over your head, or you were completely unable to formulate a cohesive response here. You see, Sony pushed everyone that *Laser Disc* was actually going to be the new format; vastly pushing the boundaries of how we watch television. So, really, I can. It's Sony's history; and as all great historians know, history repeats itself more often than not. Might I also mention that Sony fought on the side of beta max, against VHS, the higher quality image? Wow. That doesn't equal teh smart for them. And as for this:
Quote:
the only downside to BR is paying sony for the use of it.
I'd like to recall us all to how that 'only' downside managed to piss off major film companies who found a negative profit margin in the Sony sanctioned UMD market. I think the best way to say that this is the 'only' problem is to quote garden state: "Well aside from your husband's death, how are you doing Mrs. Lincoln?" Having to pay extra royalties is a MAJOR downside, it's not a tiny, insignificant thing. Companies aren't about to invest huge amounts in a new format, when they have to pay royalties per unit, like Sony does with UMDs. I mean, let's be honest here more than 9 out of 10 newly released UMDs on the PSP in the last months were actually films that Sony Pictures had some sort of rights to; whether they purchased and assimilated that film company, or actually made the film themsleves. Most film companies aren't interested in a royalty based platform. And I don't see why consumers, if they even upgrade to EITHER right now; would want to pay these costs for a Blu-ray player. Even if you look at the 'discount' gained by purchasing a PS3 as one, it's still 600 extra for something most consumers won't see any difference on. Not to mantion new media formats are always more expensive to purchase per disc. Anyone remember $5 CD-RWs? .....Yeah. And that wasn't even proprietary. I don't think the 'blu-ray' is nearly as much of a pull as some people are assuming. I frankly couldn't care less. Even most 'supposed' 1080p televisions don't actually HAVE 1080p input, so can't actually show that kind of image anyways, with the exception of upconverting; which is not true 1080p, it's faked. I'm not just bashing Sony here. I'm saying that it seems the vast marketplace doesn't have a need for Blu-ray OR HD-DVD. And gaming preferences aside, Sony has made BIG screw ups with new formats in the past. Given even their big hubbub over UMDs about one year ago, why should we think anything has changed? I sincerely hope you haven't forgotten Sony's claim that they plan to release a selecetion of home UMD players, because they look so good... Right. As a portable format, UMD is good, but Sony had much bigger plans for the format; and they floundered. Just like all of Sony's previous format pushes. And don't tell me that Sony introduced DVD to the mass market. DVD was public in 1997, and was publicly known with a large array of titles before 1999 was through. Sony had nothing to do with the success of DVD. They just happened to be a cheap avenue for a three year old format.

.....you are sorely mistaken, there will be a huge difference. Ask any cinemaphotography major and they will tell you that it is a big deal to that sector. Either format will expand capabilities for 3D animation.
Quote:
"Not to mantion new media formats are always more expensive to purchase per disc. Anyone remember $5 CD-RWs?"
when cd-rws came out there was no market for it. as the supply and demand gained speed there came competition thus making prices shift from 5dollars to about 25-35 cents now.

handsom Lazer disc also had alot of downsides, where as BR only has a few,and out of all the thigns that could be wrong with BR paying sony is a tiny annoances that will tip the scales over to HD-DVD. What I am saying is unlike Sonys prevoius atemps at a format, this one might fly,but sony themselfs have tied its wings,so its not a auto fail. joniskaos hes talking abotu SOny and thier attemps at createing a dominante format. It dose sems as long as sony has its claws in everyone with thier royalties shceme no one will want to use it much.

I absolutely HATE Micro$oft with a passion so I hope they rott and die.....f**k the Xcox360. Now for the Wii vs. PS3: $ony is charging too much OMG WTH $500 for a videogame system? Why don't they charge $300 and price the games $60-$70 instead. Or leave out the HDD for the first 20 games & only RPGs require it. But NO, $ony threw all their technology into an impressive system with an equally impressive price. Now the videogame wars look like any other economic issue. And that is, rule #1 of selling a product: "The more you sell, the more market share, the less competition" instead of a business plan that allows the PS3 to be affordable to all, it will be a niche system until the price falls about $100. Until that happens, there won't be wide acceptance. $400 is _NOT_ much money, but for a child (or his poor parents), it IS much money. Adult gamers can afford the PS3 on 1 paycheck, but kids and their parents will be hurt. I predict the PS3 will have very slow sales while the Nintendo Wii will be the first system to purchase + massively support by 3rd party publishers. "Wii will see"

Then save your money. The question is not if the system costs too much. The question is, is it worth that VALUE? If the price is $1,000 but it comes with super great technology you want, then it's worth the $1,000. But if it's something you don't need, and has more than you'll use....well then the *N Wii is the better VALUE. IMHO, many people are going to look at Blu-ray and their lack of HDTV (and not wanting it either), and say "Well, the Nintendo Wii has all that I could want, and it's $150 less than Sony. So f**k Sony." and yes I'm a PS2 gamer and don't even own a GameCube or Xcox. The better value right now is....the Wii.

you mean it has a better price. The PS3 kicks the shit out of the WII if you really wanna compare "value" just because its cheap doesnt mean its a good value

Better VALUE is defined as what you want to use it for vs. the price. Let's me try this a different way. Let's say you gave a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=19&article_id=7700 to an 80yo man. Let's say that man never drove over 70Mph on the highway. Then let's say you offered the same man a Toyota Corolla. Which is the better value to him? Most likely the Corolla because he'll never use the SLR's power to its fullest. He'll never be doing 80-200Mph (btw that is man crazy fast) so the extra power is not important. The Corolla also happen to have better gas mileage. So for some people, who have no intention of going to HDTV & don't need Blu-ray, the better value is the Wii. The Wii will plays their games, and if they want to watch DVDs they'll use a DVD player. Just for comparison, the Wii + DVD add-on will make it cost more than $300. That's only $200 less than the PS3. But for someone not needing DVD or Blu-ray, they'll save lots of $$$ by going with the Wii. The Wii is a good VALUE, even though the PS3 is much more powerful and does more...at a higher cost.

we should also not allow people to breath in Americas air or drive on their streets because if a person is legal age to vote and chooses not too, they arent using they're not exercising their constutional right to vote. Because techniqually if they choose not to exercise their right they might as well live in a country that lacks many of the liberties we are given in the US

people dont need HDTV to witness the difference between an animated movie on a dvd in comparison to one on Blu-ray. you are seriously an idiot.

477.6.2006 07:19

joniskaos HDTV helps but its nto the end all for High def, altho it dosnet hurt,BLue ray is jsut another format that may or might not be a standard if it dosent fly it will still be used by some for storage and the PS3 for gameing. Even without the BLu ray drive the PS3 would still have been 500 its jsut what Sony dose the PS2's starting price was as high, altho in all I dont like how they handled the priceing,I am keeping my eye on the lunch if anything else goes wrong I will scratch the PS3 off mylist untill it coems under 200 >>

487.6.2006 08:02

you do realize with HDTV you need heaps of accessories to actually max out the full potiental of the tv. Good luck waiting about 6-10 years. http://blogs.mercurynews.com/aei/2006/06/catching_up_wit.html

hey joniskaos, why don't you go eat a bag of horse manure...because it already seems to be coming out of your ears AND mouth. You are the expert on absolutely everything, aren't you??

My shit makes it possible for produce to grow so that people like you can get a temp worker pass to pick up my strawberries. Either way, you eat my shit

Tell me something...Does belittling others make you feel good? Does it mask the realization that, when you go to sleep at night, nobody cares about you, or ever will, if you keep acting like a little bitch? I have a feeling the Mod Squad's gonna get wind of your comments. I really hope you wise your ass up some day for your own good, one of these days you're going mouth off to the wrong person and you're going to get your ass kicked. Just try to watch what you say from now on and, if it isn't too late, you may have a chance of staying on the site and enjoying yourself. There's something called freedom in this country, you know? You have a right to say what you want to say, up to a point, but on this site it's a privelige. And if you deny others their right to respect, you lose that privelige. Damn, I feel like my mother...I'm done, there's a lot I'd like to say but I want to stay a member. Thank God for the Report link...Kegan

respect is not free, you earn it. And if you, he or anyone else insults me i will go after you and whatever force that infringes on my rights but not anyone elses.

so where is my representation, why isnt anyone commenting that idiot about what he said about me oh wait, people can only comment my post because im better at insulting people than the ones who try to attack me first. Malice to all who to everyone that insults me, drawing first blood.

i thought this topic was for the jp consumers preferring the wii...what you guys talking about???? although the wii seems to present innovative gameplay, ithink its one of those things that has a high and then drops to a low after a year or two. where xbox 360 and ps3 will continue to look impressive with the next gen graphics and whatnot. but its also true that the core of gaming, is how the game is played and not just the looks. Wii seems to be the ideal console for japanese.

5410.11.2006 05:55

munkeeboy the 360 is current gen still they have yet to make a game thats next gen graphics wise, the PS3 is a monster and not worth it from the average poor gamer. GET WII! *L*

5510.11.2006 18:51

yeah, wii sounds like fun. but i feel as if sometime wii is going to fall because its just goin to get boring at one point...because the games everyone enjoyed were, obviously on the classic controller and none else. so how can nintendo say that the new controller will be that great? i mean, yeah its interesting and stuff, but how did you guys play super mario world? and metroid prime? halo? prince of persia? all those games, they WERE...on classical controllers. and thats where the FUN was...is my opinion. BUT yes, the wii looks like fun. and the price is friendly.

5611.11.2006 07:41

The WII has 1 analog stick thats enough to provide a more traditional play style....altho to me yet again they have no foresight the PSP lack a analog nub ports are hard to do for it,the GBA lacked 2 X and Y it took alittle from gameplay the DS could have used them I see plenty of place for the buttons its just they have no foresight the WII control setup is a bit a weak from a traditional standpoint, but they have a normal game pad attachment for it I would how useful it will be if most devs devs for the wiimote mmmm

5716.11.2006 20:54

yeah, that traditional snes style controller is gonna be good for the backward compatible games that consumers are gon be playing once they get tired of flingin their arms around.

I'm just looking forward to the end of the weekend; so that both systems are out, and the speculation can be overwith.

I'm honestly none too impressed with the way people are acting about the new systems. Reports of muggings, tramplings, and more are flooding in like never before. PS3 and Nintendo fanboys are going rabid at eachother, and it's really just unruly to see how crazy people are getting over (Let's all breath and say this out loud to ourselves) a GAME SYSTEM.

Sorry, I'm just dissappointed in people for the way they are making gamers look on the media. A few nutjobs trample a kid; the news media catches it, and everyone thinks we're all monsters.

Anywho, I personally prefer the Wii by leaps and bounds to the PS3; but over time will probably pick one up. I can see a lot of reasons the Japanese prefer the Wii over the PS3, and I mean a lot. But that's personal preference. Nintendo has had a VERY strong following in Japan for decades now, so it's no surprise that they see that way too.

I hope that with the weekend passed by; a lot of the flaming on this board will go down significantly, but that may not even happen until after the holidays.

Either way, I wish everyone the best of luck getting their system of choice this year; and if you want the easy way out, just get a 360 with Gears of War; lol. They're easy to find, and look gorgeous.
