Funny, I always thought it would go the other way. How long could Sony not charge for online play? This works out in my favor seeing I own a 360 and not a PS3.

hell way back in the day when i was deciding between xbox and ps2 i knew xbox had te better system but i wasnt about to pay 50 a game and 40 for online each year, thats a ripoff. im use to playing cracked games on pirate servers, i dont pay shit for shit.

so i got a ps2, knowing that the cost of ownership would be nothing because the games are easily copyable, the online was free, and i could even use my copied games online with the right tools. and if i ever got banned from ps2 i could just alter my machines mac address and hop back on. the comparison between the cost of ownership between xbox and ps2 is like several hundred dollars compared to 30 bucks, the cost of the swap magic kit.

And thats why i love competition since the result is always positive for the consumers.

Hmmm, I don't know who is paying $80.00 a year but they are getting ripped off because a Gold membership is only $50.00 a year. However, if it were to be free I would be up for that.

I've had live for about 8 months, and Xbox Live have a lot of subscribers, as long as they are still making this much money, then they'll continue to charge.

Sony has never charged for there online service. Microsoft has always charged and that's the way it's going to stay. You have to be really incompetent if you really believe Microsft will stop charging people for Xbox Live just because PC gamers are used to not paying....lets be serious.

I was about to say the same thing. There isn't a single hint of actual fact in here. It's no better than me saying "Sony is losing exclusive games, they may start producing God of War for Xbox 360".

There's just no basis there, it's unlikely that this will happen in the next year, as M$ has commonly mentioned that "Windows Live will be included in the price" regarding XBox Live. That doesn't tell me free. That doesn't even hint at free. In fact, that suggests solid pricing policies.

I'd love for it to be free, but I don't foresee it, without a major emphasis going into micro-transactions. And even then, how truly free would it be?

Xbox live on original xbox was so [is] much better then PS2 online play because you pay for it and can demand a high quality experience ultimately free of lag, on well maintained networks.

i mean xboxlive cost 50.00 per year thats like 80cents per week if you are that cheap then its not for you.xboxlive is a much better service because we pay money and microsoft can offer us more in terms of service.ps2 was free but it sucked big time

I just got the 2 month free trial x-box live and so far it sucks. Im using the original x-box and out of the 20 live enabled games I have only two have people playing them ever. star wars jedi academy and halo 2 and they both suck. The best thing I've got from the trial is yavvin station for star wars kotor and some maps for other games. Why pay for sucky x-box live if the games I have nobody ever plays. A few bucks more I can go and play a mmorpg that millions play.

Just like any other game out there, after it's had it's big spotlight, everyone moves on to other games. Only a few old games really last online. But that has nothing to do with a service, that has everything to do with the game you are playing. Case in point Halo 2 is a few years old now; but still has a legion of fans. When Gears of War hit, a decent number of Halo2 players switched over, but there's still a large chunk of them left. When Halo3 hits, I speculate that about 1/5 of the halo2 players will stay back, because they either don't have/can't get Halo3, or because they "Prefer the old one" lol.

That's just how it goes, but to use a system that hasn't had first party titles in over a year, and that is acknowledged as dead by it's producer, as a judge for an online service.... Not accurate at all. Many xbox users traded theirs in for 360s; and because of that only a few old xbox games get much play; because only certain ones work on their 360's, not to mention there's a good chance they're off playing newer games.

Live is a service to allow gamers to play games... They don't pay people to play with you, lol.

Either way, Live still has Sony's online platform beat, sure it isn't free, but I'll take all the extra features of Live for pay any day. Yeah, Sony is getting closer, but there's still a lot they can't do that M$ does.

Some games have longer online life than others. Regardless of what systems they're on. Some will last years, others barely survive for one month. It has nothing to do with a service, and isn't something that Sony, M$ or any other online service controls; it's about what other people are playing. If you're not playing the same game, it does you no good.

Great place, btw, to post your little anti-M$ rant, considering this will naturally attract a lot of M$ fanboys, and in many cases starts a flame war.

If you don't like the games most people are playing, odds are you're broke or you have bad taste. Neither one is Microsoft's fault. If you don't like M$, then at least pick a legitimate reason and place to pick at them. Your complaints regarding game selection and your game selection are out of place here.

This topic is related to the possibility of the live service going free.

I'd only been on live a few times i found it not too bad lag wise,well compared to socom or burnout...lol...the only bit i did'nt like was the duel names that appeared in some rooms and then get doulbe teamed in a normal death match other than that i never noticed any significant amounts of lag for xbox-1 live, as for offline play there does'nt appear to be many glitches and at least when there's a stack of AI nearby and fighting happening the game does'nt go laggy or slow down like some games i can think of.

A lot of people are obviously still willing to pay for Live (including me) so I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for it to become completely free just yet. I just wish that M$ would get control of all the bridging and modding that is still very prevalent. There's not many legit 30+ level players left. It's funny watching my son pown all the upper 20's and 30's players that were bridged up several levels illegitimately. BTY, where did the 70.00 for a yearly subscription come from? Live is and has been 49.00 for a year as long as I remember, no?

Also, I think that Oblivion, Gears(a bit over-rated),Call of Duty 2 or 3, NFS Carbon, Project 8, are pretty good games to name a few - worth owning anyway. I also think that the PS3 has got to be the most over-rated/over-priced system on the market though. I'd rather have two 360's for the same price :).

There is a link, unfortunately the article was pure speculation to begin with. It was an author at a magazine basically saying "Well, the PS3 online service is free.... So the 360 will probably be too." And it's not even someone I've heard of. Heck, I'm completely unfamiliar with the magazine they work for! lol.

So it's basically pure speculation, no better than you or I giving our take on the industry.

That is pretty interesting stuff about MSLive - Free doesn't mean it is better. Live -Silver for 360 is free, and you still can download almost everything you want points for. PS3 still requires you to buy services when online. To think PS3 online is completely free is like thinking Women are just for men to...well you get the picture.

Rivex, I couldn't have said it better. Sony is still dancing around the same "We have everything they do" claim; but everytime an interviewer calls them on it... They stop talking. If Sony really does get their act together on that claim, and truly match all of Live's services for free, then M$ will have to rethink their pricing system.

So, for once, I'm rooting Sony on to hurry up and make good with inter-game logins and buddylists, achievements, free and premium downloads, real voice in ALL games, the works. As soon as they do; things may get better on my end, as a 360 owner.

That was before 'Gold' came about, and that was because you used it in conjunction with one of the popular 30 day trials back then. The fifty dollar bit doesn't surprise me at all.

But it's gone UP since then. Which is why I'm so quick to doubt M$ plans on going free any time soon.

No my friend , Xbox gold has not gone up ever, but if you see he 60 dollar kit its because it comes with acc. so if you dont want them then you can get the reasonable 50 dollar for one year of service and some stores like gamestop have a sale were you get a one month free =] just to clarify that up with you

Hmmm, the price is different where you are. I was working in a gamestop when the switch occurred. Previously you could get one year with a game/headset for $60, or just the one year card for $50; then when we got all the 360 stuff in, pre-launch, they started shipping the new 'gold cards' which were sixty without anything included, and seventy for the ones that came with a headset and a point card for downloads.

We even had our regional M$ rep in trying to give us scripting for how to explain to the customer that it was suddenly going to be more expensive, rofl.

Very much so... I'm almost wondering if that was a temporary thing during the first month or so of launch, since they could get away with it easier... I haven't checked since I quite that job a couple months after the launch.

I don't imagine it being different in the same country, even if we are on opposing sides of the country; I'm going to lean more towards temporary price-hikes, seeing as I wouldn't put it past M$ to do that during initial launch.

Yeah i was at walmart today and bestbuy last week and chekced gamestop website they are all 50 for a standard 1 month xbox360 card and more for the kit

Easiest way to pay for live is simply go to your account info on your xbox and pay for it right there. Fitty bones, no more, no less and no bs "extra" crap to go with it.

Best online game service available in the world. If anyone can prove there is another service better I'd like to hear about it.

I won't argue there... I love their online connectivity.

Ironically, as much as I talk them up on here, I am not subscribed, because I'm really upset with them over a large billing discrepancy.

Fortunately, that has nothing to do with the service though. I recommend them for a lot of people; I'm just still pissed about the way they handle the error that they caused.

Me, Im fine with the way things are in the online community but the PC gamers should have a choice to have free online service that makes it so that they can only game with other PC's and like a $20 or $30 one were you play everyone you want

Shadowrun is set to be the first inter-system game between 360 and pc. There are supposed to be many after that. I almost have to wonder if we won't see Halo 3 on the pc much quicker than Halo's transition, simply because the inter-system play would allow them to get what may be the biggest market available. With something like that, you could almost face off with Blizzard's online WoW numbers, lol.

But yeah, there are games coming down the pipe, and they're not all that far off.

If by fix it, you mean, pull all the BS that they're actually bragging about right now, like the 'piracy protection' that stops you from running most independent software, killing system resources, needing per-cpu product keys, and forcing DRM and a dial-home device onto your computer... Then sure I'll think about it.

In the meantime though, the Linux OS on my secondary pc is just looking better and better...

It's okay to be a fanboy for whichever sytem you like, heck this place is full of them, and I usually lean towards the 360 myself; but you might get more satisfaction replying to something a little more current than this.

And honestly, you might want to tighten up your arguments if you really want to debate with PS3 fanboys... There are a lot of great reasons to prefer the 360(Like I said, I personally prefer the 360 myself), but your points really don't nail it down too well.

"It holds more, and is blue on the bottom, that's why it's called blue ray" isn't really much of an argument...

And stating the obvious like "You have to pay for the system, and the internet, and the parts" isn't going to win any arguments either. We, as 360 users have to shell out for our game system, components and internet too, on top of Live. Personally though, I prefer the Live service, for it's added features and stronger interconnected service between games.
