PS3 LibMPEG exploit found?

Written by James Delahunty @ 21 Mar 2007 7:01 User comments (18)

PS3 LibMPEG exploit found? It appears that efforts to hack Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) console may have gotten a big boost today with the discovery of a bug that could lead to working exploits to inject code. This in turn, could lead to PS3 homebrew and ISO loaders. Hacker "hacked2123" is given credit for distributing a proof-of-concept example for the LibMPEG exploit, which is confirmed working with v1.10 and v1.11.
There has been a lot of rumor and speculation lately about possible methods to hack the PS3 console and possibly boot games. Blu-Ray games can be fairly easily dumped to the PS3 HDD and several have been available to download for months now. It will be interesting to see what this develops in to.

the sooner the PS3 becomes "moded" the better for consumers.

that mod wont mean crap, since ver 1.60 is coming out tomorrow and i wont say everyone, but most people want to help out on a war against cancer.

Sounds good but im not killing my ps3 yet. No need in doing something that will cause problems for a system that I havent had issues with at all. But for the future sounds really good.

uh.... the dreamcast could play bootlegs with no modification at all... this is the exact opposite.

sony knows how to win a consoul war, 70 mil ps1 buyers, 1 in 4 housholods with a ps2, sony makes its products less hard to crack FOR A REASON. if someone ever makes the silver bullet p2p client that kills every last media company sony will still be standing from selling hardware. they did it with the ps2 and im sure they did it with the ps3.

hell im sure if sony saw problems ahead they would let out a crack themselfs on the low to bolster ps3 sales. they make money regaurdless they could care less about thier developers (as has already been shown for the ps3).

That's true, because customers won't be so bored with their PS3 when there's no good games anymore.

Yes I know that...I was referring to how fast this exploit was discovered vs how fast it was discovered that the DC could play backups...my bad for lack of clarity

As far as Sony themselves releasing an exploit of any kind for the PS3,you're off your rocker if you think that. Hackers get these systems and try to reverse engineer them from the day they are released. It would make no sense at all for a company(esp. Sony)to basically sabotage itself. I bet Ms did the same then with the Hypervisor exploit..."Here ya go kids, hack my console all you want!" signed B. Gates

uhh their still losing a ton of money on each PS3, and they're not exactly selling like hotcakes.

if you actualy beleive that sony looses money on every ps3 they sell iv got some land in florida id like to sell you.

and the self released exploits are not as far fetched as you might think. people have long suspected windows of releasing viruses around the time of new operating systems comming out to get stupid people to break thier computers to buy new ones, this is not too diferent. im not sayng sony or any other system has ever done this but do you find it curious that the ps2 was sooooooo dumb ass easy to crack? and sony said it themselfs late last year whe they proclaimed that "we could win the consoul war without even havign any games" possibly a hint that they know they would still rake in cash from hardware even after p2p becomes legal, ever. sony is asian for gods sake, they have mad love for the pirates. maybe its the reason the ps3 is so damned expensive, they EXPECT lots of people to crack it.

I agree with you georgeluv. I think they making it that way because if more people see that the system is easy to crack then more people will buy the system. Its actually a very good marketing strategy and will work out for them as long as their system is stable and dont need to be replaced every 3 to 6 months.

I have to agree with spydah.Everyone knows whatever you do u cant f*** with piracy. And they started takin advantage of it.Actually it is a strategy of making lots of publicity. They know they'r products will soon be cracked. Not only the asians ..but every developer. The most profit making period for them is at the beginning when the cracking is in progress ..between these periods of time ..they are MAJOR selling stuff.Let's say i'm a shitty peasant who dnt even have money to whipe my asss with TP ..but im a gamer ...i want that game but i dont have the bucks for it ..i will download it via p2p ...i will install it ..and i like it very much ..and maybe i will change my opinion ..and my goal will next be to really buy them and raise money..for it ..support them. The most bad part of piracy is that if it was controlled ..in a way..everyone will be happy ..but then it becomes bigger ..an outbreak..and they loose control..and profit..that's the problem. But in the end ..they are the sharks and we are those little parasite fishes under their bellies ...and then the shark learn to live with us .. :D
