Third-party modification adds motion sensing to Xbox 360

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 20 Jun 2007 5:26 User comments (33)

Third-party modification adds motion sensing to Xbox 360 Thanks to new third-party modification, Xbox 360 controllers will be able to sense tilting motions and then translate those movements in-game in the way Wii and PlayStation 3 controllers do.
The new mod, called the Tiltboard is basically a circuit board with ICs and solder points in a similar fashion to illegal mod chips. The board must be placed inside the controller casing and will require the soldering of seven separate wires.

The Tiltboard is very similar to the SIXAXIS controllers of the PS3 and it senses motion and maps it to the right analog stick.

The mod also adds two buttons to the back of the controller that enable or disable the tilting as well as adjust sensitivity, angle and inverted settings.

The Tiltboard is to go on sale online only in 12 countries including the US and UK for about $40 USD.

Pointless.

Sorry if its blunt, but it is.

220.6.2007 17:52

no your right. this is insanely pointless. considering it's a third party hack, and not official, no one is going to implement this in there software.

Uh oh! you're not allow to modd it or else you'll be banned from Xbox Live!!! LOL ..i rather just use the money to get another controller or game instead of this.

520.6.2007 18:49

Wow the 360 is getting more and more like the PS3. First they add bigger hard drive, change the color to black, and now adding motion sensing and extra buttons on the back. Man thats funny.

620.6.2007 19:53

Is this even backed by MS? MS should just come out with an OEM motion sensing controller.

720.6.2007 20:08

Wow, thats retarded. Its useless because it wont ever be used in games because you would have to "hack" your hardware to use the feature.

820.6.2007 20:19

is a hack on the controller, not on the system it self... so no problem of been ban of live or anything involving the console, mod on the controller only

It isn't useless, it is just like other devices around that make a keyboard/mouse pretend to be a controller. The right control stick is basically overridden by the accellerometer, allowing you to have your thumb on the X/Y/A/B/White/Black buttons instead. It is useful, and can't be detected, but it is going a bit too far. And it isn't endorsed by MS, so it isn't a case of "the 360 is getting more and more like the PS3". This is an end-user mod gone commercial.

1020.6.2007 21:14

Wow maybe if microsoft actually made a controller with the tilt board already in it i would buy that. But I doubt thats ever going to happen.

1120.6.2007 22:16

not really useless. what if some people switch from ps3 to xbox and what the ps3 feel. then they buy this crap. to try to compare. but nothing will. but i do see a point.

1221.6.2007 02:29

It still falls in the "pointless category"... No game will support this feature since 360 does not officially have motion sensory capability. And no game producer is going to waster resources in implementing support...

1321.6.2007 04:57

if this can convert motion to the analog sticks I am game, add a coherent onboard config that lets you play with sensitivity and movement an bind "moves" to macro commands(think wii only more configurable) I would be happy to plop 130 down for it.

like the KB and mouse converters its not 100% prefect but for some games it will fng rule.

Sony did this not a big hit what will make it big hit on the 360

Theirs no point in doing that as MS have already Confirmed they are working on something for the next xbox which uses a camera to track movement and objects. But people who have an xbox probably have a Wii as well so theirs not much point, may as well get a Wii and an xbox for the price of a ps3.

1721.6.2007 09:52

you guys are morons ... this hack has nothing to do with being implemented in games -- no doubt it simply overrides one of the analog joysticks and allows you to use the TiltBoard motion instead. that's what the switch is for... duh!

These peopl are f****** copycats. Dont they have anything better to do than copy Sony's technology? As if thier console doesnt have enough to boast about (in particular thier sales). We all know Ps3 rocks and cant be beaten like that even if i´s sales are low.

Can you not read?

Quote:
it senses motion and maps it to the right analog stick.
what is there to implement exactly?
all it does is use the board and sends the motion it senses to the right analog stick which in return makes shit move on your screen

2021.6.2007 11:41

Ugh, you idiots saying that this is pointless because games don't support it. READ the text. It transforms the motion of the controller to the right analog stick. Therefore, this mod WILL WORK with ANY game that uses the right analog stick (for things such as character movement, aiming, etc). Most games let you configure the controller as well so if it's the left analog stick that you want controlled by the controller motion, that may be possible in some games that let you swap them. Pay attention people.

be that as it may, i still think it's a stupid idea.

That sounds like a ignorant statement, MS might refuse to revamp their controller but at least someone is willing to and that 3rd party is trying something it lets you swap 1 analog stick for motion.

Its not prefect but tis a start sadly because it only dose 1 stick its a shallow attempt but it shows promise if they can halve a 360 pad and change its shape a bit to fit better in most hands than just a direct halving ,being able to have 2 motion halves with a swap switch to change to a WII like setup is what they should aim for the PS3 design is stupid and cumbersome.

I would be willing to buy something like that for 60$,with some on board configuration even more.

Hell I would 60$ just for a remapping box so I can have full binding and mapping control for games, devs no longer give you the options you need to enjoy games.
(fixed for zippyisim)

I have a motion sensing controller for PS2 that I got from Target, and it was pretty fun playing Ace Combat with it. Can't wait till Ace Combat 6 comes out for the 360 so I can try this new mod out with it! :)
