Sony expects 380 new PlayStation 3 games for next fiscal year

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 21 Jun 2007 3:55 User comments (33)

Sony expects 380 new PlayStation 3 games for next fiscal year Sony announced that it expects at least 380 new PlayStation 3 games for the next fiscal year and that it hopes the games will help boost demand for the console which is falling behind in sales behind its rivals.
To date, there are only 150 games available for the PS3, including PSN online titles.

CEO Howard Stringer said on Thursday, "Attractive game software is the key to accelerate PS3 growth over the next year".

Due to the start-up costs of the PS3, Sony's gaming division posted an almost $2 billion USD loss and investors were obviously not pleased.

Stringer said he expected 200 of the 380 titles to be packaged games, and that the other 180 would be available through PSN.

"PlayStation 3 going forward will be vital to our future and we'll succeed,"
added Stringer.

I'm liking how much more PSN games they expect especially. good news, and smart to announce it too.

300 games, yeah right!

200 packaged.. 100 psn.

they said they would ship a million ps3s by spring. and they did.

380 games would be nice

621.6.2007 18:17

I hate to say it but I don't think Sony will meet the qoal here.I don't see very many titles at the moment, and they don't have a game selection. How are they going to make this goal when they haven't even released anything that is worth investing in yet.The statement must be directed to gamers in the far east, because I don't see 380 new games coming anytime soon to North America or Europe.Sony needs to focus on a game that will sell first before making a bunch of duds.Sony messed up by building a system that is too advanced for game developers.By making the system too advanced it makes the game developers push the game release dates back.If you think about it a year will not be enough time to produce anything that will catch the consumers eye.I believe we are going to see a bunch of old titles such as PS1 games brought into the picture, but instead of saying old titles they will count them as being new.If the statement is refering to actual PS3 games then we all might as well say it is impossible.

721.6.2007 18:19

Who wants to make a bet?

Im gonna say that at least 60% of those 380 will be garbage.

821.6.2007 18:28

I don't even think they can release 380 new games, because like I mentioned the game developers spend more than a year to make a game(a decent game that is).It will definately be a bunch of garbage games if they do release that many in the short period of time stated. The PS3 must not be a next gen game system if we are expecting to see garbage in return.I just don't see Sony making any profit by forcing developers to release BS games in the short period of time given. It will make Sony take an even bigger loss, because I don't intend to spend money on a game that doesn't interest me.I'm sure a bunch of people feel the same way.

what do you mean they'll be shit.compare ps2 and xbox.the ps2 dominated in game selection because it came out first but it still did even when xbox sales were strong.xbox 360 has had a major head start and if you look at its launch it wasnt as good as playstation3.system were defective, disc scratching, mic not working.sony hasnt had any major problems yet except its sales which are based on its price.a 50 dollars cut and all of these games will raise sales guaranteed.380 is possible.especially for sony, they have the experience factor and that will come into play.

1121.6.2007 21:55

How many times do we have to tell them that the only way sales will improve is by bringing the prices of the console down to a reasonable price tag.

But they wont lower it because they are supposedly already losing money on the console itself because of production costs. And I don't see a big drop in the price for awhile because on the G.A.P. (invitation only playstation gamer advisory panel forum) users will justify the cost.

ok first off, don't know about you but the last two years i've been in college not once have i or anyone else played a ps2 for anything as a group, but guitar hero. Secondly, the article says there are already one hundred and fifty games out. Out of all of them, how many of them are actually relevant other than resistance, none. If you look at any top ten list, there are no ps3 games to be found. Now if we take that ratio of 1:150 and apply this to the expected 380 they're exoected, you get what like two and half games worth even mentioning. Now subtract from those the ones that aren't exclusives, taking into account that ps3 is no longer going to be the cheapest BD player, and you have no reason to buy a ps3.

It seems to me that Sony just talks allot, yet we keep hearing we have good games coming then we see delay after delay. The only time I'll truly get excited anything PS3 related is when I actually SEE the good stunning games for myself, besides hearing just "wait."

That your opinion if you think the games out on the PS3 isn't good but there are more than 1 game on PS3 thats good to me. Motorstorm, DoubleAgent,& Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.Thats just some & there are some good titles online they released so far like Rub a Dub & Flow.Because they don't appeal to you doesn't mean there isn't any good games out so Far.Also people need to get off Sony back i didn't see people bitching about the 360 same time last year when they did have any games & Live suck balls & still charging there customers for none thing.

im upset with sony releasing these games. they are picking quantity over quality. They must think there gamers are stupid releasing a lot of bad quality games. what they should be doing to boost there ps3 sales is get off there asses an start workin on there updates to make them better, small things like in game xmb. why cant they add that? no sony, yous got it wrong, potential of a great console but yous are making all the wrong moves

380 games = 300 PS1 & PS2 Games available to download to play on your PS3 for a small price from the playstation store. 78 already available on the 360 and two exclusives Grand Turismo (sorry Forza 2 much better and Project Gotham 4 due end of they year so wont be buying that) And Metal Gear Solid (maybe if its not all hyped up) Sony should start making games for thier games console and stop going on about Blu-ray dvd. I bought a games console to play games on. Not to watch Blu-ray dvds on a standard TV.

Well your right their PS3 owners are stupid if they are buying it for the gamign system, the only acceptabel reason to buy a ps3 is for BR player, but now its not cheapest there is no reason why ppl should buy it, unless you are an idiot. So we can see Sony have realised with, Watch i can see crappy arcade liek games being mass rpoduced quickly to make up with stupid number and costing £50 to buy! This will be funny!

Still Stupid numebr of games, i don't even think the 360 has that many games out, but wait 360 games are actually really good.

Someone mentions a load of games that are good on ps3, all i have to say is PORTS!, they have 2 ok games, and theya ren't exactly amazing, i've played them, my brother has a ps3 , they are motor storm and resistance, but frankly i think resistance is a game which is a year or two late on standards, compared to what games are out their now, and motor storm, well heck look at all the other racing games out their, if it was on 360, sales woudln't be amazing, because its just another racing game, nothign special.

Also with this PSN, i do beleive that this is where peopel can purchases old ps1 and 2 games if i am correct, please correct me if i am wrong, but why would ppl buy these? they woudl already have the games they want on ps1 or ps2 discs surely. Since they woudl obviosuly be Sony FB and bought all the other consols!

The WII has the dragon by the tail and its getting 80 something games this year, the PS3 has been a disaster I don't think they can do half of that, the PSN games will be a cross between cheap flash games and ports so I see lil movement there.

200 game by the 2nd quarter of next year.....I don't see it I can see maybe 100 by the the END of next year.

I think sony would be better off dropping the PS3 price and pushing game sales that way these PR stunts are starting to be insulting.

Sony clarifies Hirai's PS3 release estimates
by GamePro Staff | 06/22/2007 | 8:36:26 AM PST

While not exactly promising as much as Kaz Hirai, SCEA confirms that the PS3 will see many more games in North America this fiscal year.

By Brent Kampe

Following SCEI CEO Kazuo Hirai's remarks earlier this week that the PlayStation 3 may be seeing upwards of 380 new games over the next year, Sony Computer Entertainment of America has clarified that these numbers are, in fact, international figures.

A Sony spokesperson confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz earlier that North America can expect to see at least 145 new titles over the current fiscal year ending in March 2008. Of these titles, at least 105 will be boxed games, while about 40 will be distributed over the PlayStation Network.

At least 15 of these games will be first-party releases, including such heavily-awaited titles as Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, LAIR, Little Big Planet, Eye of Judgment, and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

However, in order to meet this forecasted flourish of new titles and alleviate the PS3's current release dearth, Sony has said that it will rely heavily on third-party publishers, continuing a trend the company established in the last two console generations that helped drive the PlayStation brand as the dominant force in the industry. Increased game availability in addition to a possible price cut may help spur the PS3's lackluster sales, bringing it closer to the sales models of its predecessors

Better thats much more reasonable, however I think tis still dead in the water without a price drop.

no one can wait huh? i dont mind delays as long as it makes the game better

there will be good games coming out eventually.. sony isnt completely stupid, of course they will make something worthy.

in about a year, the ps3 will be worth it. i will definitely buy one, jbut i can wait until there is more for it

So, largely a bunch of ports from Wii & XBox 360.

That's not going to help much, is it?

Guess how little money & time the 3rd party people will be putting in to those probably low selling efforts.....cos up against so many other box games in the next 6mths the chances are that few - if any - are going to sell big.

The rest from Sony in-house.
Again doesn't this sound like too many rushed efforts trying too hard and diluting possible sales numbers?

Surely a better strategy would be to retail about 10 ultra high quality and highly developed AAA games (therefore giving each a serious chance of selling relatively big) from 3rd party developers and maybe another 5 in-house over the coming 12mths would make far more sense?

Flailing around wildly & hoping something will turn up (which is exactly how ludicrous tales of almost 400 games in a year sounds to me) isn't looking like much of a strategy to me.

The trouble they are in continues.

pretty much the PS3 is going need till the end of 09 to gain 2 or 4 exclusive worth while titles and even so at more than 400$ its not worth it for a couple of maybe good games.

2522.6.2007 15:59

does it really matter how many games they came out with? all you guys are going to do is complain wether its 2 or 1 million. if you guys didnt have anything to complain about then you would not be happy.

oh? the 360 is 400$ and IMO became worth at least 70% of that when gears came out now if they can fix the heating issues which they are it will be worth the 400 they want, the PS3 is no where near the 400$ mark unless your a Hdef nut(no offense) , and they want 600 for it which means it needs it needs to be ahell of alot better than the 360,and its just not going to happen anytime soon, the PS3 has a long way to go a game machine.

BTW the WII still has a way to go to its still stuck on quirky first gen games that are kinda throw backs to the last gen, they need to focus more on control and polish it to death so the system can be fun to play not feel gimmicky in some games.

If you think the PS3 is the best and sony can do no wrong good for you I don't have hundreds to waste.

Aight i will say this. i see people tend to forget that Sony PS2 had hell of a lot of games. Also Sony was never lacking for games. Their problem at this point is price price and did a say price. If - their system was $100- $150 cheaper it would be sweet. But its not. Besides that and the fact that they did not market their system the best way and did not launch 50 plus games for those who seem to always forget that the 360 did not have nothing except 2 games for a year that was fun and worth playing. The Wii at this point no matter where i look cost damn near as much as a 360 and its really not worth that much . It is a fun system but i think its more of a fad type system that will wear off sooner or later. I am not a fan boy of any system but i know a lot of people have something to say only because of the price and current game selection right now. The price is the only thing thats really a true issue the games can be worked out. Personally i rather them take they time and make the games right for this system rather then hash out some BS throw together like some of the games on the other systems.

you cant really compare the PS3 to the PS2,its more like the DC or N64 only with much more on cost, altho it should only take 2 more years for the PS3 to wake up from tis launch doldrums.

I could really care less about games consoles but I think the point is worth asking here......if they're going to flood the market with almost 400 games in the next 12mths how the hell is anyone supposed to make any money?

Why should the 3rd party developers do anything but invest the minimum and go beyond the most basic straight port?

......and since when did Sony have the resources to create so many genuine AAA titles in so short a space of time?

IMO it's just more PR BS that doesn't stand a moment's thought.

.......and the fanboys get suckered yet again.

try reading between the lines the 300+ comment is PR the actual number is 140, witch is more reasonable, now even more reasonable is 90 games once you filter out PSN, of that 40% will be exclusive, 30% ports and 30% multi console.

If its anything like the PS2 in qaluity there might be 10 "worth while" games..I would not hold my breath tho.

At the price the PS3 needs more than just mediocre and slightly better.

the PS3 is maturing but so far its not worth the price and frankly neither is the 360(its current worth is 300 with the HD).

I completely agree. The only games i play currently are sports games or Need for Speed most wanted. A lot of games on the 360 get old real fast which is why between the 360 and PS3 they need to address on a serious level. It dont make since to pay $60 for games that get boring or old quick.
