CRIA allegedly shuts down Demonoid

CRIA allegedly shuts down Demonoid

Demonoid, the very popular torrent tracker, has allegedly been taken down by CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association) as users have noticed that both the tracker and the website have been down for at least the last 24 hours.
Although Demonoid and CRIA have yet to deny or confirm the reports it is definitely a possibility that Demonoid's new Canadian ISP shut the site down after being pressured by CRIA. Recently, the ISP said it would pull the plug on Demonoid if it received complaints.

This would be the second time in recent memory that Demonoid has had major downtime, the last time being when it was still based in the Netherlands. The Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN asked the web host Leaseweb to take Demonoid down and hand over the admin's personal information but Demonoid relocated to Canada before anything could come of it.

It seems likely now that Demonoid will have to relocate again, or stay offline and be another huge blow to the BitTorrent community.

OH DEAR GOD NO!!!

226.9.2007 08:49

Is this the end for Demonoid??

326.9.2007 08:56

I was kind of wondering where they went, well I have the feeling this isn't the end of Demonoid. They will figure out somthing.

426.9.2007 10:00

this is just a RUMOR
i think the source was their IRC, but the demonoid staff said one of their website HDD's crashed..something like that, and that it'd be a few days to get her up and running again

526.9.2007 10:01

I just hope they dont bend over and take it like some other tracker sites have, I hope the make the smart descion and go for one of the last safe places left, Sweden.

626.9.2007 10:39

Yeah, I have also heard that Sweden is a safehaven for torrent trackers. Im sure there are other safehavens as well. Hopefully its just a hard drive crash. Long live Demonoid!

Ahh!

I had a good ratio too! 2.85 or around there... It's like the Apple store for my iMac but better because everything is free! I trust that site too...

I hope it's a dead HDD or somethin', because I depend on that site lol

It's bad if it goes, but we have to remember something else will come along. There's a new type of internet coming soon that will succeed Broadband, speeds will be faster, etc.

Who knows what new P2P methods will come? All I know is, there is ALWAYS a new P2P software/site/method that comes along and there always will.

They will never stop it.

But I just love Demonoid so much because it has EVERYTHING (Except porn, but who cares, that's everywhere?) !!!

1827.9.2007 01:51

Terrible news.

Hope Demonoid is up and running soon. Good luck to them.

Hmmmm, it's been a few days now.

I hope they get back up and running soon.......otherwise I'll just have to use one of the other several hundred (thousand?) torrent sites out there.

Picking on the more 'high-profile' torrent sites is nothing more than posturing, they aren't stopping a thing.

All this type of idioic counter-productive posing does is harden the resolve of the sharers.

What a bummer. I've been a member of the demonoid community for years, and this is a serious blow....And yes, there are other torrent sites out there, but none of them regulated the torrent quality like demonoid. It also served as a community for people to exchange ideas and requests, and to educate people on how to properly rip, encode, and up various forms of media.

There is a post on the other thread that is linked by creaky saying that there is a server drive down and they are working to fix it. It should be back in about 3 days....around 9/29 or 9/30. This info is from a member here who apparently knows some info from IRC. I hope this is correct, and the CRIA hype is a myth.

2528.9.2007 06:09

Is this the end of another era for Demonoid?. Is this the end which sweet bliss fails, and vegetates to the never ending horror?

Well, if may be, I had been a user for at least two years, and it will be disappointing, to say the least. I found the torrent site, to be very useful, and accommodating :(

Thanks.

2628.9.2007 12:19

Yeah... Pretty sure the CRIA thing is crap either way... if they had managed to get something shut down, they'd be broadcasting it everywhere they could in an official capacity. Will be nice to have them back up an running :)

Granola is right, I found Demonoid was best for having quality products, unlike some other sites who would let morons upload supposed dvd rips only to find out later that it was just a piece o crap cam movie converted to vob files.(and no, not everyone provides samples)
WEll it's been 2 days plus now for demonoid, I really miss em.

2928.9.2007 13:46

Amongst other things the torrent community preserves old recordings that the recording industry have consigned to the basement and refuse to publish any more - simply because they cannot meet today's "quality standards" - that is quality in terms of electronics not musical quality. I am afraid copyright lasts far too long to protect authors and artistes many of whom are dead long before the copyright runs out - handed on to family or businesses who did nothing towards creating the work. I personally feel that 20 years is long enough for any copyright - if the artiste, or more usually commercial conglomerate, hasnt made their money from it by then maybe it wasnt that good in the first place.

It's no big deal. At worst, even if the authorities managed to shut down all P2P, the people would just revert to the way we did it in the old days. We would form a share group of about fifty people. Then we would all pitch in to buy one copy of what ever movie or software everyone wanted. Then we would make copies for everyone that contributed. On top of that, everyone that got a copy would then make copies for their friends, usually for free. They will never get it through their thick heads that there is no practical way to stop people from sharing. LOL!!!
If they were smart and really wanted to stop P2P they would reduce their outrageous prices to the point where people would not go to the trouble of downloading anything.

Oh well, it was a good run for Demonoid. Nothing last forever. There will be other P2P's popping up. But I doubt they will match the quality of Demonoid.

3728.9.2007 23:37

ah well plenty more fish in the sea as they say

3829.9.2007 02:10

I have been using Demonoid for several months. The other BT sites just give me a headache. Demonoid is so pleasant to browse, search, and upload to, it really has a nice user interface. I can set preferences to only show English torrents. And the comments posted by downloaders will quickly show if a torrent is real, fake, or has some other problem. Sometimes the poster will fix problems that the downloaders find with the uploads.

I am sorely missing Demonoid and I wish some of the other tracker sites would copy some of Demonoid's user interface features.

3929.9.2007 03:04

What do you meaning "getting back up"? No one has said anything about it coming back.

the site wasn't up this morning. i hope by least 9pm my time i guess.

4329.9.2007 12:32

IIRC it was mid December 2004 when Demonoid went down for over a month and didn't come back until late January. I think that's when they moved their servers to the Netherlands. That was right before the MPAA took down that Lokitorrent web site amongst others. I'm not too worried about Demonoid.

the torrentfreak site is unreliable as a source of information. this was proven based upon a posted communication.

a more reliable source of uptodate info re: demonoid is:

http://www.thecircuitbox.com/demonoid/

What is most frustrating is the lack of any warning, news, or information from the administrator of the site; he probably knows at least the source of the problem if not its solution, and should let his community in on the beef.

4930.9.2007 11:13

heh i know it's uyp but i can't get on it. i get this message:

This is true if they would drop the prices of movies and CD's they would probably have less sharing and more buying. I wanted to buy my daughter the new Hannah Montana CD and it was $25 plus tax why pay that much and some day it will come down or on sale. I am not paying that much for a CD that will probably be listened to a few time and tossed in the old music corner in her room. These company's are nothing but greedy cry babies.

Anyways, to anyone who REALLY wants to get in, just put the registration page, home page, whatever in your start page list if you have a browser with tab browsing. If you don't have a browser with tab browsing, GET ONE. At any one time I can easily have 20 pages open with only one browser but I digress. Eventually you will one day look at the page that says "registration open."
