PS3 runs homebrew

Written by Matti Robinson @ 01 Apr 2008 5:40 User comments (52)

PS3 runs homebrew More than a year has passed since PlayStation 3 was released. The whole time hackers have been busy trying to break into the system and run Homebrew, without any luck -- until now. First homebrew software was run on a Firmware 2.20 PS3 yesterday. A simple "Hello World"-program was created by a known PSP hacker Dragula96 and run through a vulnerability in the system architecture.
Dragula96 claims that this is no April Fools joke and that it works on both 40GB and 60GB models with firmware 2.20. There has been no details yet on how he managed to do the trick. For the next step Dragula96 will try to run a pong game successfully on a PS3.

Let the firmware wars begin!

31.4.2008 07:32

Interesting....now....let's get PlayTV in the US and we can see how deep the rabbit hole goes....

41.4.2008 07:41

this is big.

51.4.2008 08:27

I saw this same story here:
http://www.qj.net/Hello-World-on-the-Pla...g/49/aid/117085
and the people here feel like its fake. Is it real or fake?

61.4.2008 08:34

IMO is fake.
If it was real the video would be more clear.
He doesnt show us how he boot
what he boot
and from were he booted that image/message.
internal HDD, external HDD, BD, cd?what?

71.4.2008 08:42

Pardon me if i'm still a bit skeptical of this one.

I think it would indeed be a huge step forward for PS3 owners, but i'm not convinced.

To right! We will have updates coming in all directions soon.

I LOVE HACKERS. I love my phones being hacked and Iphones and other systems too. But that stuff has tangible gains and immediate benefits. What I do think is lame are those that hack the crap out of their gaming systems. You guys bought it to play frakkin' games on it and as for the PS3 in particular, for both Blu-ray AND games. What benefit is there in hacking a PS3 (other than of course "doing to to see if it can be done" and playing jacked games) All you goofs out there saying "woo hoo ............... firmware wars, homebrew now starting" need to get a hobby and go fly a kite or ride a bike because you have entirely waaaaayyyy too much time on your hands. Go buy your system with money that you EARNED, rent/buy your games (for the most part) and contribute back to society instead of looking forward to you opportunity to prey on it and leach off it. Go ahead and jack some stuff but I'd bet that the majority of those anxious for this to happen are stealing everything and not buying a thing. We call you leaches and negative contributors to society. Of course all the guilty out there (and ONLY the guilty) will respond to this with harsh remarks because of course that makes them feel good about their thieving. That also proves YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE.

I'm with you, besides who would risk bricking a $400-$600 gaming system to play pong or to run some sort of disk images so you can steal games. He probably stole it anyway so it didn't cost him squat.

are you calling me a goof???

you should get a hobbie, instead of just wasting all of our time hearing all your complaints. I mean, you even complaint about april fools???? who do you think you are? egomaniac

151.4.2008 11:15

Show us a video of how you got there from the begining... Turning it on and we will believe you. Also write down instructions so that anybody can do it on their 40 or 60GB PS3. We need a proof video like the Hello World videos on the PSP that took us step by step from turning it on to getting the hello world. And what's with the tape on the TV?

191.4.2008 13:20

It's fake, it's a UT3 script mod.

201.4.2008 13:30

PS3Hax.net has confirmed this to be fake.

211.4.2008 13:45

So it’s real after all; sort of… If you have Unreal Tournament 3 and the skills to compile UnrealScript, you too can do this –

* place the USERDATA.JAM file on the root directory of a usb memory stick
* then add mod via UT3 on ps3 the normal way you would any other mod
* start up an instant match, set opponents to 0, select mutator option
* go down the list select Hello World, run game.
* hud will be replaced by hello world screen.

It's not that I don't trust you, I can completly see that there is a Hello World Program on the PS3. I just want to know if this can actually lead to something and if it's a mod that home users can do. Dragula96, make a Freewebs.com website with details, if this leads somewhere, your site will be really popular just like Dark_Alex's

The thing I really hate about Sony, is their use of firmwares and upgrades they input in the PS3 and PSP. That's their failed attempt to protect their gaming systems behavior protections. Make it nice and easy like the Xbox 1 was. Nothing in this world will prevent this; Microsoft knew about their security flaws within their first console and did not pursue to correct it because it was only going to be a wasted effort and money.

Or their attempt to better the console, like with added features such as Profile 2.0 for Blu-ray or Divx playback functionality.

How can anyone hate firmware updates when that give Sony a chance(or any console company)to improve on your system. So far i wouldn't call firmware a fail attempt when Sony has learned a lesson from the PSP & have Hackers scratching there heads & at a lost of words that they can't crack the PS3.

I dont hate it but nor do i like it, the Firmware updates that is.

Firmware updates, there in lies my problim with it firmware is a Major Operator of PS3 (tells it what to do),but it has major space issues. look at the psp they have updated it so much they had to make another PSP with more ram, that left me and many other's with a bitter taste in there mouth. i Dont like being cheated.
the new question how many updates before your PS3 gets left out of the Major update loop, huh i wonder.

But i like it for the fact that it doesnt sugar coat the updates. as all updates are tied to the hardware. no third party Interpetor.
such as the Xbox Dashboard.

I doubt the PS3 will run out of memory for firmware. With memory so cheap now, it would have been retarded for Sony not to put in around 1GB. 1GB DDR2 RAM for example is $15 or so. a 1GB Flash Drive runs $5-10. Im sure everyone here would have been willing to spend that extra $ so they wouldn't be left behind when with an old revision.

372.4.2008 22:23

ha, we will see give 2 years, and you will Question Sony's Bussiness Ethics.

they said the same about the PSP and then Wham.No Skype for you.

Time Will Tell All It Always Has.

383.4.2008 00:21

I HIGHLY doubt that that's the real dragula96, and if it is god help us all. Besides its fake, or at least not doing what it was suppose to do.

Well I suppose its better than them making a PSP2, or discontinuing support for the PSP altogether. In fact id go as far as saying f*** skype and all its pansy tassels and frills; go messenger is more than fine for me and my phat psp.

393.4.2008 10:27

i want to see furikup(is a Freeware Skype deal Made by the Noobz team)as far as it can go its really Neat'o Matic.

I still hold behind my statement about PS3.

In the video you can clearly see that it is a 80GB PS3... However the article states it has been tested on 40Gb and 60Gb?!

No credibility!

Its a 60 gig,. watch the vidio at exactly 1:19 he even zooms in on it. PS3 says it has 55gigs of space and 24 left.

i disagree, i think M$ effectively discouraged most people from modding the 360 by having all xbox 360s be defective, forcing users to rely on their warranties. why else would the RRoD problem still be around after an adequate 3 years to fix it?

What do you mean? They did fix it. You can't just softmod a 360 with a game and a modified game save. You need to flash the firmware on the drive. Any PC DVD ROM drive can have their firmware upgraded, firmware upgrading will always be around as a type of modding. You don't see firmware modding on Sony or Nintendo drives because they don't use normal PC drives. About the RROD, I think it's impossible to prevent. The console is physically too small to handle so much power.

There you have the explanation of how this was done..

Now how do you know that what this video shows isn't just some carefully scripted video running from a dvd on a ps3? No proof at all.

Until somebody publishes openly exact instructions to run unsigned code using the ps3 game engines I will not believe a word of it.

It takes about 2 years for a full console to get hacked (if ever). So far all I have heard from the ps3 breakers is.. errrmmm.. nothing.. except some battering on and on about isoloaders. They need to get with it. I will guarantee sony have fixed that hole.

Now about homebrew.. Seriously, most homebrew games are only of interest to the writers themselves. Linux will do everything any homebrew writers could think of.

I hope people do crack this machine wide open.. I really do, so that people can save a fortune by burning these rip off 8 gig games to normal dvd. (not that there is any content worth pirating anyway)

Because Sony is the RIAA, MPAA and the leader of every anti-piracy program out there. Half your money towards PS3 accessories, software (Sony only) and other peripherals go to making sure the system is uncrackable.
