Grand Theft Auto IV dominated media before launch

Written by James Delahunty @ 28 Apr 2008 7:24 User comments (47)

Grand Theft Auto IV dominated media before launch Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. is on the verge of launching the latest edition in the Grand Theft Auto video game series, GTA IV, which is expected to break records and generate $400 million in sales over its first week. The Internet has flooded with reviews, previews and other commentary in anticipation of its Tuesday launch, and Take-Two will be delighted with the overwhelming amount of positive reviews.
The hype boosted the shares of the publisher as much as 3.4 percent, with Take-Two shares valued at up to $27.10 while Electronic Arts (EA) shares were valued at $25.74. "'Grand Theft Auto IV' is a violent, intelligent, profane, endearing, obnoxious, sly, richly textured and thoroughly compelling work of cultural satire disguised as fun," The New York Times wrote.

Take-Two Chairman Strauss Zelnick may have the last laugh if the game meets or even exceeds its expectations. Zelnick urged rejection of the Electronic Arts past offer, insisting the price was far too low, and said the company should wait until after the game's release. "Clearly there were very high expectations for the game going in and it looks like from the early buzz that it could exceed those already very optimistic expectations," said UBS analyst Ben Schachter.

Schachter continued: "These ratings are quite extraordinary. It's something special and helps us understand why Take-Two was so confident and adamant that they wanted to wait."

Its funny that many people don't seem to understand how much revenue the Gaming industry brings in. It destroys the movie industry on a yearly basis, yet the average non-gamer would probably never consider it as such a heavy hitter. Games like Halo and GTA now generate so much hype that its hard to ignore the industry like you could even a few years ago.

228.4.2008 22:22

Speaking of the movie industry, I wouldn't be suprised if this game turned into a movie. I think movie makers may be running out of ideas. Remember DOOM? Didn't really tickle my fancy. A Splinter Cell movie was announced when Chaos Theory came out, and its announced that Halo will come out in 2009, according to IMDB.com. I'm not saying that its a bad idea, but I think that creativity is being lost in the movie industry.

its amazing how much fun sex with prostitutes, driving around exploring your city, fighting and killing can bring to mostly young males.

dumb at best, but I won't go any further...

I'm glad to see this game getting a lot of hype. i always hated it when a bunch of people i knew practically splurged about Halo 3 coming out. this game seems pretty damn revolutionary and i'm excited it has so much coverage. it looks to be an excellent game.

maybe the video game industry crushes the movie industry, then we get more games instead of BS movies? sounds good to me ;)

Certainly a winner.. I know adults.. over 30 who have rushed to the shops this morning to get their pre ordered copies.

No such thing as bad press when you have something to sell. All the whining about violent content and stuff has just bolstered sales.
I can't wait to have a go.. because saints row was a real POS bad attempt at a copy of the format.

This will sell by the truck load, but i'm waiting for the PC release to benefit from the increase in refresh rate, draw distance, screen resolution and most of all FREE, user generated content, that the gaming industry is hell bent on destroying so they can charge per weapon, map, ect.

until then GTA San Andreas will keep me going!

anyone got any good GTA mod sites?

with all the controversy this game is getting. i was surprised to find like 3 cops in line were there to pick up their copy of the game LOL

i want to know soon what the tally is on its first week of sales.
not some estimation.

I hope this game is not available for the PS2. I have a PS2, PS3 and 360. Everybody on the planet, I mean everybody in developed countries, owns a least one PS2. The average joe prefers watered down quality, that’s why blu-ray is not doing so well with its standalone players. I witnessed the Betamax-VHS war. I still can’t get over it; I have 200 blank tapes now as collectibles. I hate going to the video store and seeing a very small amount of titles for PS3. I know that this game is currently not available at launch, but if it gets released months later … I really want the PS3 to be successful but if Sony continues to produce stellar titles for its PS2, then what’s the point of creating PS3 games? I know that a slow transition needs to be made, but why continue to manufacture PS2 consoles? That’s something I don’t understand, a real bad call or maybe Sony’s intentions are to leave consumers with a soon to be obsolete console milking everybody but leaving a huge catalogue of PS2 games behind. I'm not hating I have a PSX as well but if the PS3 is every going to take off they need to stop creating PS2 games now.

I am picking up my copy today at lunch!!!!! I am pretty excited that this game is finally out.

I'm curious to see if this is as successful as they want it to be.

I will pick it up at some point, but you won't find my happy ass standing in a line for it.

Well, this is the year for the PS3 heavy hitters to hit the scene. The PS2 was a good buffer, but it is fading. Just take a look at Gamespots PS2 release schedule. And the real popular PS2 games are for the most part also released on the PS3.

All i can thnk of is if Rockstar DONT release this on PS2 they must be insane!! think about it over a 100,000,000 ps2's worldwide, surely they must relise the amount of sales they would make - just look at al the other GTA's out there - sold by the bucketload and still do!!! Come on RS wake up!! They said there would not be a PS2 of Vice City Stories - but there was!! 'This years GTA on PSP only' was quote i read somewhere in a games mag!!

I believe Sony would be the one making the decision to have it released for the PS2. And from a business standpoint, it would not be wise to do that if they want to shift people form the PS2 to the PS3. It's how they move consoles - selling bundles. Same with Gran Turismo and Metal Gear. Why would you buy a GTA PS3 bundle when you can buy the game on the PS2. These games are console movers. Sony has taken their time phasing the PS2 out because it still had some juice to squeeze out of it and it probably offset some of the PS3 profit losses. But it's time to phase it out, and releasing a blockbuster on it will not accomplish that.

The ps2 won't be able to handle this game, and it would be downgraded a lot, just to work on the ps2.

But it wont be a blockbuster by then, by the time RS re-write a few codes.... say a year or so!! If they downgrade it so what? people will buy PS3's by the shedload!! and they will sell just as many GTA's on PS2 if not more, from Rockstars point of view they wouldnt care what platform its on.. and as for Sony, if it wasnt for the sucess of the PS2 - there wouldnt be a PS3!! which i note are already getting faulty lasers!!! PS2 for me for the forseeable future!! plenty of games to play yet, and still being supported by 3rd parties... Thank the Lord!!

Hollywood wouldn't know what to do with GTA. They would probably sign on Michael Bay, who would cast Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and somehow fit in Shia LaBeouf, since he's supposed to be the next big thing. They will make it PG-13 for the movies, but then release the unrated edition on bluray that has a couple of boobie scenes.

As a matter of interest i e-mailed RS, they have no plans to release on PS2..... i reminded them of how many sales they will lose, didnt reply to that one!!! Even Eidos, are gonna release 'Tomb Raider Underworld' on PS2 as well as PS3 - forward thinking there! good for them and me!! Remember Resident Evil, that wasnt exactly a huge Box Office hit!!!

2429.4.2008 22:45

They are just saying that, everybody wants to make money it will be released for PS2 soon enough, but its not helping. Microsoft stopped manufacturing consoles by mid 2006 and stopped making games after 2007. Why continue to manufacture PS2 if the PS3 is on the shelves? Money yes, I don’t blame them but this could lead to frustration of many.

To be clear, we have no idea how widespread the problem is, but it's certainly on Rockstar's radar and making the rounds both in our tips line and on forums.

Rockstar declined to comment on the issue officially, so I went to the phone and called up Rockstar Support to see what they had to say about the problem.

A very friendly, and obviously unhappy, fellow answered the phone who, after thanking me for not yelling at him and apologizing profusely for the problem, spilled quite a bit of beans on the issue:

The man told me that the problem is apparently only effecting the 60 GB version of the Playstation 3, but that it didn't matter than my particular console was a launch console (Yes, I told a little white lie and said my copy was locking up.) He said the problem is not across the board for the 60GB PS3s but rather only impacts some, so their tech folks are working around the clock to try and figure out what is causing the issue.

He did ask me to make sure that my harddrive wasn't full and that I had the latest firmware update, but confessed that that really isn't what's causing most of the problem. He also said that the Xbox 360 is having the "exact same problem," which has further stumped their tech folks.

I asked him if wiping the harddrive and reinstalling the PS3 version would help, as seen on the PS forums, he said I could try but that he hadn't heard of it helping a single person.

He ended the call by saying that they really have no idea when a fix will be coming because they can't figure out what is exactly causing the problem and then once more apologized.

"I feel terrible about this."

If only more support folks were as empathetic and genuinely concerned about the problems their customers are going through.

I just bought it yesterday for my 60GB PS3... It didn't freeze up during the intro or whatever but after a couple missions it froze when I crashed into a corner and crashed my PS3 :P

I hope that was a coincedence or w/e...

Good game though :)

PES2008 did a simaliar thing on PS3 - you know what i think, the ps3 has so many firmware versions/updates, and sony keep messing around with it... its too complicated - thats what i lke about PS2, nice an simple!!! I read somewhere that sony are sending updates over the internet for 60gb consoles - to stop them reading PS2 games!!! a bit like Sky snooping on you and updating their software, reading your card - turning it off if you are behind without you knowing.... So the morale of this tale DONT CONNECT YOUR PS3 TO THE INTERNET! its not the game its bloody sony - ensuring you HAVE to buy PS3 games.... I am sticking with my trusty 'old tech' PS2 for now thanks very much!!! either that or the lasers cant cope with the amount of data it has to stream... my moneys on that option - i fix pS2's all the time to sell on, I know about Sony lasers!!!

i doubt if this is true, they may be screwing up incompatibility with the euro ps3 that only had software emulation from the outset, and now the scaled down 40gig ps3 because of incompetence. There have been issues regarding B/C and programming for the PS3 from the outset not that sony have ever accepted this as the reason that games keep screwing up.

But this is why all the sony bloggers infested every forum on the net stating things like;
"why buy a ps3 to play ps2 games", even though AAA+ titles were still being released on the ps2 while the ps3 launch line up sucked, and
"ppl only slate the ps3 because they cant afford one" or the best
"why play games from the stone age when you have a ps3".

the public relations spin for the ps3 has been pathetic, and only believable by fools or kids, but what do you expect from a company that continually lies, is anti-consumer & anti-competitive.

There is an update on GTA4 over at gamepro and its not good news again for the ps3, i thought that the cell was easy to programme for?

PlayStation 3 version only: Resolution, online issues hamper GTA IV experience

PS3 GTA IV

Can't really make out this image. Is it only 640p?

When it isn't locking up your system with inexcusable game-ending glitches, Grand Theft Auto IV, for all intents and purposes, has delivered as advertised.

That is, if you're playing the Xbox 360 version.

Confirmed reports today have laid two additional issues at the feet of the PS3 version of GTA IV. These issues include inaccessible online play and a less-than-true-HD 640p resolution.

Sony is aware of the online problems, read a post over at Kotaku, but Rockstar so far has not responded to their inquiries. The GTA IV servers are hosted by Gamespy.

As for the resolution issue, several outlets have confirmed the PS3 version runs at 640p, compared to the Xbox 360's HD 720p. Before you go stringing up Sony and Rockstar for the gaff, however, remember that Halo 3 experienced the same un-HD treatment when it launched in 2007.

It should also be noted that neither version runs at 1080p, the resolution most touted by both Microsoft and Sony in the run up to the "next generation console war." Maybe GTA IV could come out for Wii after all?

Fair comments - the thing that still bugs me though is why would anyone give a rats arse if when playing a GAME!! stress game.. they can see every blade of grass while driving or whatever at 120mph?? does it really matter that much?? the end result is still the same... OK the PS3 can play larger files, and a few other tricks - but its still just a GAMES console!!! Th eonly way i would get a PS3 is when they start going wrong in large enough numbers to bring the second hand 'faulty' price down, i have a mint PS2 in the box all wires etc - cost me a tenner!!! works a treat!!! whats wrong with that???

WOW...

So with all the money those guys have over at RS/Take-Two Interactive, why didn't they have a team of people testing this out before it was released. Surely they would have experienced the same problems.

Maybe someone said the tests passed when they actually never ran the test? Or maybe it's another one of those issues where they are pressured into releasing the software before it's complete.

Like I've said before, they don't care if it's broke...ship it anyways. We will come out with a patch at a later time.

only if the game play equals the visuals, which is what PC gamers have enjoyed for a very long time but Hi-Res & HD are the new buzz words for sales, like it's something new.

Anyways check out my last post as it appears rockstar/sony have screwed up with GTA4 on the PS3

@ goodswipe

it certainly sucks, if the delay wasn't bad enough seems that the 360 ver of gta4 was finished last November but delayed to get the ps3 copy to the shelves for the same day.

but the update via gamepro appears to only single out the ps3 ver of the game and that sony are aware of the issues, and that the visuals on the ps3 or only 640 compared to the 360's, 720p resolution.

but the sad fact is ppl will always follow the marketing/PR spin and pre order or get games/software/films/music on the day of release which is just plain stupid imho.

always borrow, rent, read an unbias review, ect before you part with your cash ppl, and NEVER ever purchase any OS until its fully tested by the populous, don't be a "keeping up with the Joneses" because of sales splatter, use your brains.

I don't know why people^^^^ want to troll but this is a RockStar issue not Sony.Sony didn't make the game only the console but like a few they alway want to blame Sony even when they didn't make the game.

GTA IV Overloading Console’s Cache - Causing Freezes

XBF Writes: "...GTA IV now overloads the cache and causes a lock-up (freeze). So now, instead of saving load times and providing a seamless experience, Rockstar has forced some machines to crash while attempting to load from the cache.

The solution: Rockstar needs to release a patch that limits the strain on the RAM right out of the gate. Can they even do this? Who knows? ..."

The problem, originally reported to only effect the 60gb PS3, now is showing up on Xbox 360s as well.

Amen to that, you won't catch my ass buying anything on launch day ever again. 60 bucks is too much money to throw away, especially since you can get about 3-4 months of a game rental service for the price of one game.

It made my 60GB crash once, almost twice, but oh well. Great game :)

To the guy above, $60 is well worth it! Everybody gave it a 10 out of 10... Very surprised when I saw that. I can play this game 24/7. I should have gotten the special edition :P

if this game was on PS2 they would have to remove soooo amny features from it. i paid all up 1000k pretty much just so i can play this game and trust me it was worth it. when i 1st got it i played it for 10hrs, give me 72hrs and i might complete main storyline and a few other things.

Oh well you are a very (rich) lucky man, then arnt you its a GAME thats all so what if they remove a few features, remember SAN ANDREAS, thsts got plenty to do in it!!! R* could release it on say 2 discs?? OK not the same graphics quality - but who cares??? Games are for playing to while away a few hours - if you want close to 'reality' look out the window!

391.5.2008 07:47

1 im not rich at all, it wasnt like i pulled the money out my ass and im surprised i didnt mug a local dealer for the money (would have been fun tho). 2 yes i luved GTA SA (completed it in 3 days not even), but lets b honest here, 2 discs would b annoying as hell, having to swap if u got to a new map or use a diff feat. 3 there r a lot of feats in GTA SA, but, GTA 4 has WAY too many, play it and u will find out, i could name em but i havnt finished the game yet and like i said there r too many for me to xplain in wirting. unfortuanely they removed sum feats like buying proprty, BUT, they really make up for it with everything they've got in it. rockstar went all out for this, they really did. but relax. there is always the PC version plus GTA SA Stories to come and that will b on PSP, PS3 and PS2. i sold my PS2 for $200 with 2 controls, 100 games, it was chipped aswell and i usaed that towards the PS3. ironic; i cbf xplaing feats but i wrote all this :(

401.5.2008 07:52

also u mentioned close to reality, well i cant afford a 9mm yet that i can silence. also GTA 4 is a good way to idealistically kill ppl and commit crimes with out costing u reall money to bribe cops in reality they rnt cheap nowadays tho i am happy the cops in AUS complained about low pay, thats a real bonus to me, and im not jking. u can say i play GTA too much and get the wrong ideas and that it really does influence ppl. but i say its only aiaded my original and right ideas.

P.S. the physics in this is way too good lol rockstar really r gods of the gaming industry, i cant belived it

Oh no, here we go again. Another guy that has to get all crazy after playing this video game, just to ruin it for everybody.

I wonder how many frivolous lawsuits we will see this year?

THIS JUST IN...

A boy in the state of Texas, goes gun crazy after playing the highly anticipated GTAIV. The boys parents said that they never saw any signs of problem, until their 14 year old son started playing the video game.

The story at 10....

Thats OK I cant afford the cinema either - so i must be really missing out, no GTA 4 or Iron Man - god how will I survive?? (sic) The shame of it all ;-<
Anyway kids going mad with guns over a game - piffle! My 11 yr old Nephew plays GTA SA and he just puts the cheats in and flies cars around!!! Not seen him going mad with a shotgun, i reckon its all an excuse for crap parenting!! Most kids (99.99%) just play to beat their mates, soemthing to do, i play coz it fills a few dead hours, personally i prefer Lara croft and a good ol bit of Tomb Raiding!! Mind, it IS fun to get about 6 stars and build up piles of expolding cars heh, heh....

Exactly my point! You don't recall all the hundreds of news articles about parents or someone trying to sue the makers of this video game?

Just because their kids are dumb or the parents do a piss poor job at raising their kids, doesn't mean that the game companies should be responsible.

Rock Star said tha there will be no GTA:SAS a long time ago... Very disappointing :(

Perhaps they will change their mind someday...

462.5.2008 01:57

ah damn ur right i looked in to that, i was looking forward to GTA SAS but also whover mentioned i cant remember, im not crazy and stupid enough to go crazy over this game and go on a rampage, 1 im not american 2 i have priciples and morals so killing innocent ppl at my skool and blaming it on GTA is way out of the picture, 3 i like to use numbers a lot, 4 its never ever the video game that infleunces ppl to kill. i got 3 neaces the eldest is 8yrs old and she loves playing GTA SA and she knows the difference between idealism and reality, why?? becoz she has good parents same as the other 2.
