U2's manager once again decries ISP's for not policing subscribers

U2's manager once again decries ISP's for not policing subscribers Paul McGuinness, manager of rock superstars U2, is once again going after ISP's, calling them "shoplifters" and accusing them of turning a blind eye to music piracy because it makes them money by selling broadband internet subscriptions.
"Cable operators, ISPs, device manufacturers, P2P software companies -- companies that have used music to drive vast revenues from broadband subscriptions and from advertising. They would argue that they have been neutral bystanders to the spectacular devaluation of music. I don't believe that is true," said McGuinness.

You may recall that he made similar accusations earlier this year at the MIDEM music industry trade show in Cannes, France. This time around he was once again speaking to a music industry audience in Hong Kong's Music Matters conference.

McGuinness claimed that ISPs are already capable of taking action. He said "The modern history of the Internet is chockfull of examples of ISPs intervening in the traffic on their networks when it suits them,"

As an example he cited Comcast's recent experience with P2P filtering to block BitTorrent filtering. He conveniently forgot to mention their subsequent change of heart after the FCC made it clear that they were prepared to take action against the company over the matter.

Seems to me Paul McGuinness has his head buried so far up his own butt that he like Cary Sharman can't see the forest for the trees. When is the last time anyone has heard a new album from U2? I think his cries of shame on the ISP's is a tactic to get people to look at U2 again. He was awful quick to jump on Comcast for blocking bandwidth, but yet failed to mention that they changed their tune once the FCC took them to task about it. I'm so bloody tired of morons like him, Prince and some of the others who seem to forget that it's the fans who made them and yet these asses seem to be content to bite the hand that feeds them.U2 seems to have lost the following they had a few years back as I've not heard a new album from them in some time. I'm not a big U2 fan but I sure as heck ain't gonna lay the blame on the ISP's because their sales are in the basement.

Basically as a fan of U2 I have paid to see them in concert 3 times also have purchased many of there albums cd's etc... As far a s Paul McGuinness gose I can understand his concern but on the other hand I feel a group a wealthy as u2 could save some face and credibility by not forcing this issue ... I mean the band is older now they are millionaires many times over , so it comes accross just a bit odd to hear his complaint...I mean how much money do they need... the average fan probably lives pay check to pay check if not on less.. come on Paul Mc guinness perhaps you need to be a champion of another cause ...because ultimately this will reflect on the bands image

Stop harping about something and go write a decent tune, pick up a cause like fair use for your fans instead of b*tching about something that ain't going to change any time soon.

People like this make me sick. I make better wage than most and help my neighbors and some charitible causes. I do what I can but I am also one of the masses that gets shat on by the haves of society. Well folks I have something you want. U2 are twats - always have been always will be
- Bono is the biggest twat amongst them - a bit like Bob Geldof on steroids with stupid glasses, hat and a plastic nose to match.

Only a supreme twat of the highest order would actually release a chart single as a means of apologising to his wife for screwing around with other women and then denying it to her face until she got the proof nd confronted him with it

Paul McGuinness is an even bigger twat than Bono - because he only looks after the money and has no musical talent whatsoever as well as an extremely miniscule gender defining appendage.

Yet spare a thought for the poor lads and their manager - they need the money - go out and buy their ten year old CD Albums now ! - the 50 year old "lads" must be almost starving now they are down to the last $ 5,000 million in their collective Swiss bank accounts.

I think U2 are making enough money as it is. Greedy pricks.

75.6.2008 10:13

Die hard fans will always buy the album and go to the concerts. Look at what happened to Metallica after they started all that stuff a while ago, now where are they?

PISS OFF U2 and PISS OFF BONO.

This is the inevitable result of a chosen manager BY BONO. He's such a shmuck! Go and save the frakkin' world from poverty and adopt a nation YOU F'ing PUTZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

95.6.2008 15:12

What a c**k!

105.6.2008 16:06

Lets see how this would work....Businesses and people that have been victims of a crime could sue automakers because the automakers didn't keep track of how their cars were used. Maybe the responsibility could be shared with various street and road departments.

This all sounds like U2 wants their freedom and the hell with everyone else. Do as I say not as I do.......

115.6.2008 16:22

if all the rich bastards in the world like gates, balmer, jobs, mcartney, bono ect all got together they could end starvation on this planet tomorrow , but they aint fuckin interested in something charitable and worthwhile. All these fuckers are on a league to see who can have the most money sitting in the bank doing fuckall while half the planet sits without basics like food and water . Spending 2million on a number plate for their cars is fuckall to these wankers, because they know they still have royalties pouring in from now until the day they die.

Dont dare download a mp3 tho, because its immoral........... Makes me fuckin laff and sick at the same time

Paul McGuinness needs to stop ranting from his lazy-boy chair and get with the program. It is not the ISP's job to police anybody. People like Paul McGuinness need to come up with more innovative marketing strategies, compatible with the new digital age. His draconian way of thinking and ignorant rants are what's hurting the business.

Wake up sir, you are a dinosaur.

Again go after illict profit and were the money is not hounding the consumers over copying "thought".

156.6.2008 0:58

You would think that a band of a bunch of old farts like U2 would be happy that young people (who do the majority of the downloading) give a damn about the band.

166.6.2008 1:16

Dont those idiots have enough money already?? I mean.........c'mon how much do u want?? Besides those grandpas need to do something else, perhaps wishful thinking into a la..SNOW TROOP.. yeah right. All they do is stir up more commotion for the isp to get more ideas to put a damper on our downloading. WHat a croc...........i'd say.

Thanks for the compliment but I'm no hero. Just tired of some who seem to talk only with foot in mouth and thumb up backside. You should have seen me before the weight of the world crushed my hopes and dreams, I believe that was about 20 years ago.

Hey folks this guy really is an idiot and he is spreading bullshit amongst the clueless. Why did he mention comcast were blocking torrent traffic? Bit Torrent technology is not illegal. And why oh why is it that every time bit torrent is mentioned, they all jump on the band wagon and say it is being used ONLY to facilitate copyright infringement!!! Bit torrent is the most effective way to transfer DATA. These people are scaremongering and the computer illiterate will take it all in. The same people should discover GOOGLE and do some of their own research before listening to wan**rs like McGuinness.

196.6.2008 9:43

That's why the technically illiterate can run the world. Because of their "spin" doctors, and the deep pockets of the ones that want to keep the status quo. Morons like McGuinness and Cary Sharman and the rest of that bunch haven't two clues about what P2P is all about, whether it's regular file sharing, there are legitimate uses for it as well as bit torrent, but these ignoramuses would have you believe that it's wrong. If it don't keep them in dope, booze and ladies of the evening then it don't work.

206.6.2008 11:31

Paul McGuinness,I hope word gets back to you that your "former" fans think your a complete A-HOLE! Do you really think you are someone who has some importance in the world? Your in a band for cryin outloud, your not a doctor, teacher, policeman, fireman etc..May you get arthritis and lose all your money you pompous jerk.

yup.. just like his forgotten band.

We should all thank Paul for giving us something to talk about. Next he should be demanding the world govenments are not doing their part to make him more money.

The ISPs would do more if they could. It is those pecky privacy laws! I am sure he is itching for them to drop those. Maybe he has not thought of what would happen then. Maybe he and his band might wind up in jail for drug deals because the cops tapped his phone line.
