Update: Sony has no partners yet for movie download service

Yesterday, Sony confirmed that it was bringing a movie download service to US PlayStation 3 users. Today however, new reports have surfaced implying that no movie studios have yet to strike distribution deals with Sony for the new service, meaning the movie catalog for the service could be small to start.
Sony has been in talks with all the major studios, but so far only Sony Pictures is a definite, for obvious reasons.

"Sources at numerous major studios confirmed to me that while they have all talked to Sony, none have yet made a deal. The only one that's definitely on board so far is Sony Pictures,"
reads a report from Variety.

The report also suggests that in the future users will be able to transfer movie downloads from their PS3 to their PSPs.

They are probably waiting for the same huge payoff they got for drm-ray exclusivity.. They will have a long wait, stupid greedy people.

way to step up and pinch hit for nobrainer. you forgot to cite obscure outdated articles to prove your point.

That was mean :(

I'm suprised.. As money-hungry as Sony is, they should have tons of people on there side. Oh well, the MPAA will side with them any time now. Bet there negotiating a contract right now.

Hunt, please don't do that again. If you disagree post something on topic in rebuttal to make a point but don't call someone out like that again.

As for the service it is still in the VERY EARLY stages so it is bound to have little support. That's fine to me as I am sure there are more than enough movies to choose from in the Sony Pictures library for now. If they can provide a quality HD download service I may try it out and rent a couple here and there just to save me the hassle of going to a store, waiting for something to maybe come in the mail or if I have company over and it is something at the spur of the moment.

I've noticed a trend of people defending nobrainer's troll post recently.

Why is it that nobrainer is allowed to make troll posts all the time but you guys never step and tell him not to do that again? The article could be like, "Sony artists are selling well on iTunes." He's going to come in flood the page with 4 year old articles about PS3 DRM (not related at all), The MPAA (not even the same industry as the article), the RIAA (only relates because it at least the same industry), Blu-Ray DRM (again, not even the same industry).

LOL, the mods/afterdawn people have no issue with that. But dear god if you post asking him not to troll or if you mention his name when someone brings up a DRM rant for an article that has nothing at all to do with DRM in any way shape or form, now you're Satan and the other guy is some helpless martyr.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

I've not seen nobrainer actually making a personal attack on another member, but when you call him by name "a troll" then it's time for the mods to do their jobs. Trust me nobrainer has gotten his fair share of grief from the mods and other members of AD. As oner stated, you don't know what your are talking about.

I wont be using this service im more than happy with having my disc in hand. Now if there offer some releases before BB release dates i would consider it.But for now not interested.

1128.6.2008 13:50

... I still can't seem to find the part of this article that makes an allusion to DRM relevant without obscure speculation.

I didn't mention drm in relation to this article.. just that the studios haven't negotiated any deal because they are no doubt expecting sony to step up to the plate waving their bottomless chequebook again.

Supposedly these downloads are going to be linked to only sony branded devices, and probably only to the device that they were downloaded to..

Theres no point arguing with you fanboys Hunt or is that [unt?.. you either have your head stuck so far up your ass that daylight is a distant memory, or your bank balance is swelling with the proceeds of advertising sony..

I call trolling and shenanagins! ;)

1328.6.2008 17:06

So going off on a complete tangent about a "drm payout" that you can neither prove or back up (in relation to this article... like you said) doesn't make you a fanboy? Posting anti-sony hatred comments based on a hypothesis without links to back it up is pretty lame in general.

.. and as for the 9-year old "l33t speak" manipulation of the name; I dont think I need to say anything about the maturity level that other members can't read from your post already.

I'd continue.. but I am not allowed to call people out for the things they claim against me on this particular article... plus I have to go pick up my check from Sony today.

And for totally disregarding 2 warnings Varnull has 2 days off.

LOL hunt as funny as this sparring match (or whatever you may call it) was none of you actually reffered to the article..i for one even though i dont have a PS3 find the concept of transferring content to the PSP..what got me thinkin is will there be a limit to the ammount of PSPs you may transfer the content to and how long will the content last (limited/limitless)?

1628.6.2008 19:35

lol... you make a good point. Im thinking any time-limiting drm would be easier to circumvent once the data is on the psp memory stick. I guess we'll have to wait to see what is decided.

1730.6.2008 01:45

Now I for one don't own a PS3, but do own a 360. Are they trying to do what the 360 has been doing for awhile now??
Ya ya I know I'm not up on the times and don't fallow the stats on which system can fly to the moon and the other can fly to mars.
And so it doesn't seem like I'm being biast, I do want a PS3, and like the fact that you may or may not be able to transfer the movies to your psp. Kinda Like what you can do with zune and Ipod.

185.7.2008 00:03

I really cant see sony making any success out of this, nor do I wish them any good luck either.
