New PS2 model coming to Russia, India

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 05 Jul 2008 2:18 User comments (60)

New PS2 model coming to Russia, India Sony has announced that it will launching a fourth model of the PlayStation 2 in Europe and India on October 28th in an effort to "penetrate India's and Russia's burgeoning market for games."
Sony country manager Atindriya Bose says the launch will be simultaneous for the new markets and that the new model will be a slim model with built-in AC adapters.

"PS2 is an entry-level console, which helps first timers to enter the gaming zone,"
added Bose.

Bose also noted the new model will keep the same retail price of the outgoing PS2 models, older, fatter versions.

"We feel PS2 has the potential to penetrate further into the Indian and Russian markets. Console gaming is in its nascent stage in India. These are untapped markets and are new to the gaming world, hence we have no plans to phase out PS2 anytime soon,"
he added.

Wont the latest decision impact PS3 sales? "We do not market it as a PS2 or PS3. It is the experience of the PS that we market. PS3 is for the next generation. People who are first timers in the gaming market want to pick up PS2 and experience that, before upgrading to PS3," Bose finished.

hu! so we have the ps3 and developers committed to this format so why purchase a ps2?

do they still make top games for the likes of the dreamcast, ps1, sega saturn, xbox original, snes, megadrive, n64, GameCube?

what is the rhetoric from sony and co (paid bloggers) "why purchase a ps3 for ps2 titles", in regards to the removal of backwards compatibility and making even the software emulation version a buy time decision, if the ps2 has a viable future?

Maybe they're in fact planning to discontinue a really dumb idea (making PS2 compatibility a buy-time decision) and add software compatibility to the $400 model. Maybe they'll even offer a system update to buyers of the existing 40GB model that up-flashes their systems.

You know PS2 compatibility is just a software trick in the 80GB model, right?

Unbelievable....the PS2 STILL makes good sales and in countries where they can maybe get a chance to enjoy something at a really low price you have to spin it and crap on it? Read the article, it states

Remember Sony doesn't drop support for their systems like others do, and since they have the PSP, PS2 & PS3 ALL WITH SUPPORT I think they know what they are doing better than what YOU think they are capable of doing....

Do you remember the first couple of months after the Wii and PS3 came out? Yeah, the PS2 outsold the Wii and PS3 for holiday sales. It is so far, the best selling console out their despite being how old it is. They're making profit for THREE systems, Nintendo TWO, Microsoft ONE (but I guess they're Windows OS could count as two).

The way which Sony devises its plans is odd but they know what they're doing. Why should they concentrate on PS2 BC? They have a console that needs as much support as it can take at the moment. IF the BC worked flawlessly from the start, as did PS BC on the PS2, there would be no lack of stellar support. All games would already work, and they could possibly make games run smoother and faster. But there had to be a slight problem where some games didn't work right. If nobrainer wanted to compare this to the 360, by all means do so. They didn't even want BC in their console to begin with, and you're bashing Sony nonstop.

By the way, the PSOne, a console released in 1995 continued support until just two years ago in 2006. The PS2, a console released in 2000 is still growing strong. A game such as Mercenaries 2 is being released on the PS2 along with the PS3. Why, because they know people will buy it for the PS2 this August. There are still millions who haven't switched yet. Even I just switched this year just because of GTA4 and MGS4 along with the novelty of playing games that either aren't available for PC, or are too much for my PC to handle.

Have I had one problem yet, no. Do I expect to in between the time of 3 years, maybe. In sport of this I bought extra warranty and Murphy's Law will hopefully take over from here. But beyond the console problems cliche, I don't regret buying a PS3. The 360 is fine without the RROD, which I doubt is completely relieved for people who are currently returning it for a refurbished console. If some fanboy wants to compare both consoles, I'm just gonna say, don't bother. It's been about one and a half years since all the consoles were released and they seam to balancing out. The Wii is on a scale of it's own. And for the 360 to have been out for this long and only managed to get sales of 19mil is pretty odd. This means people who want a specific console for their home, have or are choosing it. There's no more one sided shift to this console war like it was for the last two or three. That's more than a good thing, as it'll encourage a bit more competition.

I'd be amazed if you read all of that, seriosuly...

You realize the only reason they are doing this is because the ps3 is failing and they are losing money and the only way to make that money back is by continuing support for the ps2

no the reason they are doing this is as it stated in the article. why would you try and sell a $500 piece of equipment to a country that dont play many games, no person in india is gonna wake up one morning and having never played a video game decide they fancy dropping a crap loada money on a ps3. by selling a cheaper but still fairly good console to places like india you are allowing them a cheap way into gaming and hopefully creating future customers.

are they doing it for money, your damn right they are but whats wrong with that, i dont like sony trying to sue people over music but selling people a product is not quite the same is it.

they are still losing huge amounts of money on every ps3 sold, so if they wanna try and re market something older to a country that never really got interested about it the first time around then why not.

@ rvinkebob

The ps2 was the best console because it had 100% support even though the dreamcast was a superior piece of hardware.

The reason for dropping backwards compatibility was that they were shifting their resources to the ps3 if the ps2 has a viable future it contradicts their statements about dropping backwards compatibility.

i would agree that the ps2 was great and i loved my ps1 also but this thread is about the ps2 having a viable future, now even though many times sony have stated they are shifting their resources towards the ps3 and rightly so, what's the point in supporting "ancient hardware" quoting the sony rhetoric of dropping ps3 backwards compatibility, you know the Ferrari rubbish they spew or the caveman quotes i'm sure you have heard them all. the games are going to dry up for the ps2, because studios are shifting focus to the new hardware, obviously. so other than the back catalogue they are in effect selling something that will be obsolete very soon, kinda like all the TV screens that are still being sold in shops that or are not HDCP DRM compliant, classic Manchurian Candidate strategy.

@ rvinkebob

btw what comparison did i ever make to the 360, oner is making comparisons with his "unlike others" statement. love the way you had to drop the red ring into this thread which has nothing to do with the vole in a thread that has nothing to do with anything other than "the ps2 having a VIABLE FUTURE". you do know that ALL games for the ps3 are made on a PC don't you rvinkebob, pc's are far more powerful than any of the consoles, even a home desktop type not even a gamers rig dude.

Wow, some people really hate Sony.

All they are doing is selling a slightly modified PS2 in a new market. The PS2 has all of the bugs sorted out, is a solid machine, and has a much lower price point than the PS3...which makes sense for new gamers in poorer economies.

Why is that so hard to accept?
Are they doing it for more money? Well...yes.....that is what large companies do.

To be honest....I didn't know PS2's were NOT sold in India and Russia.

I do not understand why u would make another ps2 model due to the fact that its already one of the most relaible consoles on the market, unless they want to put a lock and key on it soo it gets locked and can not b cracked. Why not just up the numbers of the current numbers that are already being produced.

147.7.2008 09:28

Did anyone read the article. It has a built in power supply. That is the modification. It is being sold to poorer countries. It has a massive catalog of games. I have a PS3 because i had a ps2. I got a ps2 because i had a ps1. They are just smart enough to get their foot in the door. One would have to be stupid to not understand this and a sore looser to argue negatively about this.

I heard about this here actually the Christmas of 2007 as a rumor. I think that its good that they keep pushing the PS2 sales. Honestly, If the PSone, NES, SNES, Saturn ad CD Still sold, I would buy them. The PS2 has some great games with some still coming out and as a starter system or even a main system, its a great one. The PS1 and PS2 were the dominating consoles in the previous generation.

167.7.2008 23:15

This is good news for Russia and India. No reason to bicker about it. More people in gaming is a good thing. I am sure they both have plenty of localizing teams on the ground ready to get to work.

I read the article, but not your statement. This is not true. A power supply is not an AC adapter. The AC adapter is that little rectangular device on the second part of the slim PS2's power cord. The new form factor seems about the same and hopefully the less weight they described won't make it less durable (mine has fallen off the shelf a couple of times and works fine-it's so light already).

What do you think the AC adaptor does? It converts the incoming AC into 12/24vdc and supplies that power to the PS2. Hence, power supply.

ah so then you were just flaming me on this thread for "maybe" linking to older information on another thread ok that makes sense as the information i supplied on this topic came directly from sony europe and i am assuming the "miss information" you talk about was the remark i made about the blu-ray player the bdp-300 not being able to play bd-r, dvd-r, dvd+r media that i also took directly from the sony support pages.

so thank you for you opinion of myself i really appreciate being called a liar but when YOU make comments like this rant advising me to attack microsoft on a ps3 topic its not hard to understand your angle oner.

Sony shows PS3 production costs are dropping

MS selling old consoles as 'new'

French website logic-sunrise who is usually pretty clued up on these things indicates that Microsoft's new 199 Euro's Xbox 360 packs with 2 games and 2 wireless controllers are in fact OLD machines. After opening 10 of them, they found that the machines have been converted to new and all have non-falcon motherboards, old Hitachi 47 or Samsung MS25 drives and the repair center sticker on them. They suggest that you do not buy these packs and if you want a brand new machine, then fork out 199 Euro's for the arcade pack or 269 Euro's for the premium pack.

PLEASE STOP THE CONTINUAL PERSONAL ATTACKS.

ah here is the SONY support page with the BDP-S300 player.

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=BDPS300

click on Operating Instructions, read the PDF, page 6 "examples of a disc the player cannot play"

but that is me supplying miss information now isn't it.

So now you are trying to make this into something else I see...no problem. I have some questions to ask you before I make it very clear but we'll see if you can properly answer them.

1) Do you help others on aD?
2) Do you participate in ANY other forums on aD?
3) Do you MAINLY post in the news threads?
4) Do you consistently post in Sony news threads?
5) Have you been warned before for misinformation?
6) Have you been temp banned for breaking aD's rules on other occasions by me & other mods?

If you REALLY want to get into this I will and without "flaming" as you are trying to make it seem (baiting doesn't work) so you can try and get me into some type of trouble when all I am doing and have done is clear up your old, biased, misinformed trolling posts.

Like I've said before, this is an open forum and anyone should be allowed to participate whether they post something negative about a product or positive - what does it really matter? The only people that seem to take "offense" to this are those that own a PS3 or are more then likely a "fanboy". Where in the forum rules does it state that one must participate on every section of the forum or be banned? Does it also say that one can not post their views on a company?

I don't get why you guys hate on nobrainer so much. Some people need to open their eyes and realize that some companies are crooked and don't care about the customer. That's just the nature of business. People love money and will do anything to keep making money. Sony is such a large company now, do you really think they care if they piss a few people off with their products - no, because most people are mis - informed about things such as DRM and other tidbits.

Some of you guys are starting to sound like communist dictators, you don't like what you see so you try and shut it down. How bout you just stop replying to the guys posts if you don't like them.

My two cents...

You are right in many points and I do agree. But the situation is not that someone can't post their views of "Company X", it is that there have been MANY documented posts of which that have been proven to be false and that is what people here on aD have done BESIDES myself are doing....which is make sure the misinformation doesn't confuse the people that come here to aD. For someone who has posted that Sony has "teams of paid posters spamming forums" it sure sounds a bit funny that all he does is the same but reversed....

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/346253

This one from the man ~ http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/380660

or throw them out the window and let the free for all ensue. I would really like to enforce the rules laid out without anyone calling foul, but TBH I think you (nobrainer) deserve anything and everything you have coming to you. I've tried to work with you about this and you still insist on posting the way you do and where you do. Reporting a moderator is really petty too, do you really think that another mod can ban another mod? Do you think that the admin of the site really has the time to go through the offensive posts to see if the mods are being reported? What kind of reception do you expect when you come into a pro-sony thread and start thrashing them?

So no, I'm not going to allow a free for all...sorry fellas. But I'm adapting this to fit the news discussion...

It seems like people are upset that Sony is working on the PS2 when the PS3/PSP are out. Do note that this is in India and Russia. I'm pretty sure that the PS3 hasn't reached India, I just talked to my relative from India and he said that LCDs are just getting common but are still a handful of money. This is Sony's main system in those countries, let them do whatever they want, we don't need to bitch about it here in the US (for all that are from the US)

Hi ;)

It was only a couple of years ago sony released the ps1 in Ghana.

I hope they aren't expecting massive game sales in these two hotbeds of game piracy, or is it just an excuse to get these governments into the "piracy is killing technology" BS and force anti fair use laws across the world. Lots of the larger cracking groups are based in India and Russia, or that is where their FTP servers are hosted.

I'm watching.

usually when you find someone annoying you ignore them and they leave.

Don't make me laugh,Middle class people are barely in safe waters anymore, as for poor people there gonna be homeless in the next few years. America's economy is sh*t Police are getting laid of left and right. Firefighter cant keep up, with demands because of diesel prices and there already low budget thats about to get cut again. Trucker's can't do there job effectively any more. hell even laboring jobs are laying off people like no tomorrow.

the U.S from where i stand is in for a world of hurt.

I love this site, it has good information. there are a lot of cool guys here. but as for No brainer's Case, its not like he ever did anything to hurt anybody, sure his information was outdated and sometimes twisted to his liking. but you guys knew this, and its not like he Shoved bad info down your throat.

And sometimes his info on other thing was not half bad.

im not trying to tell the Mods Or Staff how to do there job. but i think you did go a bit Over Board on that.

Anywho...

Now as for the topic at hand, I agree these guys might be the number 1 country for piracy. but handing out old technology now doesn't make it anymore right. the way i see it, its a form of Consumer discrimination.

Sadly yes. That's what it boils down to. (with LOCO's monetary amendment of course)

And Varnull's comment about flogging a dead horse is right on. Only, it seems like their flogging the dead horse with a wet herring.

Surely whatever currency is paid in the shops (or not.. most Russians and Indians who want a ps2 have imported one on the cheap years ago) the {imagined} game sales lost to piracy will be crowed about in the good old bog paper $$$

It's probably cheaper to wipe your backside with US $$ these days than buy toilet paper.. any Yanks care to comment on the mishandling of one of the strongest economies in the world by a bunch of greedy and inept meat packing glitterati? The word "junta" isn't strong enough for the state of US politics today.

iluvendo, you got ripped off if you need free latex patches.

Watch out.. the vulcanising solvent type glue supplied with the latex/neoprene puncture repair patches will dissolve PVC dolls. You need a water based latex solution or patches specifically made for pvc.. the kind for paddling pools seems good.. see here

Aww c'mon.. he works for the railroad.. Must have learned his method of item description from the people who write up that other great work of fiction... the railway timetable!.. Second only to a political manifesto in its distance from reality ;)

If you had you'd have seen my negative feedback.

I ordered the blow up doll and got a rubber chicken with a photocopied picture of LOCO's face.

I'm still upset.

we better stay on topic or somebody might blow a gasket & is not a mod.

Very true sir.

I'm still confused by the "necessity" here. I still think it's a silly power play and a large gamble for $ony in general.

Interestingly.. this is being blown up by sony pundits as a "new product launch".. I found this..

http://www.petitiononline.com/ps2ind03/petition.html

Which makes a few holes in the story, and adds a new dimension to the spin. So it isn't such a new thing then.. they have had it before.

Interesting comments here http://www.thinktechno.com/2008/07/03/so...nd-europe-soon/

Oh.. I think we have a little leeway for OT banter on this one ;) We learned how to repair paddling pools and beachballs (and blow up loco dolls) which is always useful with summer and kids and holiday accidents in the very near future. Hint:: don't smoke a spliff while relaxing in the kids pool.. the bombs burn holes leading to a sinking feeling and a soggy lawn ;)

India is a country of contrasts. As one of the asian tiger economies great things are going to happen in the next 10 years. BUT.. as it stands now the image of the country is of large numbers of nearly destitute people being exploited to provide cheap goods for western markets. This may give employment but obviously is only a one sided publicity which isn't a fair view of the situation. Large numbers must work in call centres, judging by the number of times we speak to Indians when calling a bank or customer service centre.

Lets see how sony get on with this. Interesting the ps3 isn't being advertised, mind you.. I haven't seen many media adverts for it here either, apart from the odd game which is available on all the others... MS push the 360 and almost every hour you will see Wii games or features promoted... Very strange.
