Mythical city of Atlantis found through Google Earth?

Princeton defines the mythical city of Atlantis as "according to legend, an island in the Atlantic Ocean that Plato said was swallowed by an earthquake."
The Internet flared with rumors this weekend however that the fabled city had been found using the updated version of the satellite mapping software Google Earth.

A British aeronautical engineer fiddling with the updated 5.0 software noticed a strange 'street grid' pattern underwater about 600 miles off the west coast of Africa, and the size of Wales. For those interested, the exact coordinates are 31 15'15.53N, 24 15'30.53W.

Google has since denied the rumors though: "It's true that many amazing discoveries have been made in Google Earth, including a pristine forest in Mozambique that is home to previously unknown species and the remains of an ancient Roman villa...In this case, however, what users are seeing is an artifact of the data collection process. Bathymetric (or sea floor terrain) data is often collected from boats using sonar to take measurements of the sea floor. The lines reflect the path of the boat as it gathers the data."

We recently reported that a marijuana field spotted in Switzerland using the mapping software led to the arrest of 16 people and the seizure of 1.2 tons of marijuana with a street value of $2.5 million USD.

Wow I like how that boat was able to make 90% degree turns..amazing...

Does Google think that people are stupid? A sonar search does not leave ANY marks on the surface of the DEEP ocean! What is Google trying to hide and WHO is paying them to do so!

I's not brain surgery send a submersible and verify the grid.

723.2.2009 11:28

So we are to believe that the catastrophe that befell mythical Atlantis left an intact area the size of Wales where the grid is still perfect- 90degree angles -after being submerged for at least 2500 years? The whole area just slowly sank and kept it shape. Yeah right. And I have invented a diet pill that requires no exercise or reduced caloric intake to loose weight! $19.99 +s/h a month, forever. But wait you get the free universal remote for just s/h a $400 value so you never have to get up again. Amazing!

Edit: And everything I was taught or read about Atlantis was that it had concentric circular canals with grand entrance canal.

ffs.. more retard posting.. I'm in the bikini bottom camp..

READ the damn article retards.. this area is THE SIZE OF WALES..

That would make this the largest city ever on earth.. and very few streets because on that scale the lines are miles wide.. very f---in wide streets don't you think.. or was atlantis the home of giants?

Data collection artifact.. sounds about right.. the ship went up and down with the tides perhaps.. on a scale of one pixel is about 2 miles on that image then it's no achievement at all to make a "perfect right angle" turn.. you do a run.. turn your gps on.. turn around and make another run back a short distance away... that's how mapping works, not some random wandering around.

hey.. offtopic.. would bikini atoll be a nipple?

1223.2.2009 21:04

varnull I find you insulting
as far as streets I never said that and don't believe they are streets
but wasn't atlantis suppose to full of canals? wouldn't they be wider if used for shipping ??
I'm not saying this is the case and I'm not saying your wrong you may well be right.
but do you have to insult us for asking or kidding around??
I don't like being called a retard.....hell even retards don't like being called retards........huh go figure

HUH you find the fact that I think right angles at 90 degrees are odd retarded or the fact that I thought maybe it should be looked into retarded[ would sure answer questions all around]
or the fact that if just if this was some thing Government might hide it retarded?
well son I've spent a few years at sea and I can insult dumb ass stupid f***** like you as easy as you can call other people names ya know those of you who resort to name calling are usually showing your real inteligence or in your case lack of inteligence!!
have a nice day asshole!!!

1523.2.2009 22:51

Even if it isn't Atlantis, it is definitely something. Plus if the boats are leaving these trails everywhere they go picking up this information, then why are these lines located centrally right there? Why aren't they everywhere over the ocean floor? Boats have gone all over the ocean taking this information, if this is the case, then there should be way more lines all over the ocean floor.

1623.2.2009 23:35

To "auwolf", No it is NOT sarcasm. To "1samurai1", You are right, why aren't these lines more common all over the Ocean bottom? Google was just too quick to deny this and it makes you wonder why. There are a few similar "lined" areas to the east of the same site together with some strange structure-like mounds rising out of the ocean floor. Those lines are indeed large so they could be channels, even though they would be large ones.

People that immediately deny things like these or try to fit a "rational" explanation to everything are just narrow-minded and are happy living in their perfectly rational little world... God forbid extra-terrestrials are real 'cause they would suffer a heart attack.

1723.2.2009 23:52

I find it odd to think the powers that be wouldn't hide something like this, I mean well if tomorrow Goverment found out a large meteor was gonna hit our planet do you think they would hide it ?? hell yes they would!! they would want all of us going on doing the jobs to make it possible to save the few they could save [and that would be a short list most of us aren't on]and they would save them selves and a few smart folks and they would let all the rest of us die with out knowing what hit us

now while lines on the ocean floor are not the end of the world [ I hope] I must admit size wise if real lines and not sonar traces then either something smarter and more powerful than us made them [that would be worth hiding expecialy if they know more about what made these lines than we know] or if made by man then it had to of sank after being made since we don't work well in water over waist deep

I know I just figured it out.............thats where whales F*** after all they gotta hold the females against something to screw and that would make a mess of the ocean floor............just don't understand the turns........maybe they got a cramp ...LOL

Haskins69

I don't recall varnull pointing you out as a retard. She never mentioned you. You made one post before her post. Did you feel somewhat guilty? Do you actually believe if this anomaly is really Atlantis, that anyone could keep it a secret. This one is as bad as the "mask on Mars" pix made by ancient Martians. Give me a break. Varnull pretty much debunked the whole affair.

@varnull

It would be an inverted nipple! LOL And I was old enough to remember the B&W TV pictures on the news when they blew the atoll up. And the good color film in the theater newsreels. You can probably find the hole in the ocean floor on google earth. There was a show recently on the contamination they didn't find a lot of. scary.

The article say's the lines are not really there, they were artifacts that showed up in the data collection. Or, they could be deep channels caused by Aliens dredge mining the ocean floor for exotic lithium crystals..."I need more power! Snarfuk"

C'mon people think clearly here. It's probably just Aqua Man doing laps.

Look as long as the scientific establishment sanctifies its'credentials,There will be no discovery of anything. Why because if the scientist are wrong, they lose there expert status(read:ability to make a living). This implies that some one or thing is in charge. That would make some people call me a whacko. Name calling is easy,so go ahead live in your paradigm. Here is a thought, trying thinking for yourself, you might be wrong or ??

Care should be taken though. I hear the gases are lethal.

2624.2.2009 20:32

I don't know what the thing is. Scan lines seems improbable. If it is real then it would not be streets, but walls and buildings.
A wall the size of Wales? Why not? The Great wall would put this thing to shame.
I wonder just how long it will take Google to remove the image.

2724.2.2009 20:39

@SProdigy

That would be so, only if facing away from the mirror! Or in your case would it work facing the mirror w/o bending?? J/K :P

I was waiting for that... Depends on who's looking!

2925.2.2009 13:51

Why does everyone jump at each others throats? Times were never as bad as this generation of inbred self centered idiots. Listen to yourselves. Someone says something, anything at all and some f***** moron has to start calling names and trying to discredit someone when they don't really know anything. How about we start taking things seriously, truly analyze the situation, give real thoughts and opinions and figure it out instead of reverting to extremely childish tactics of name calling and random blurting out of stupid shit! This is how these people in power are able to tell us anything they want. They understand how stupid name calling is and how stupid we are for doing it. All it does is put people into an uproar, F*CKING GROW UP!

Its obviously not an artifact of the information gathering process. THEY WOULD BE ALL OVER THE OCEAN LIKE I SAID BEFORE. If you can disprove me then do it by all means please, I am out for the truth and if you can come up with a truly good explanation to it I would love to hear it... but if you are just going to talk about Uranus, inverted nipples, and calling people retards then just shut the f*ck up and grow up.

3025.2.2009 14:00

followed some thought here and looked for atomic test site "Bikini Atoll" didn't find it but found french test Island where 2000 atomic bombs where tested............guess what no bomb blast marks on the ocean floor around there

and "1Samurai1" you go !!! I agree 100%
yes I did resort to name calling to but only after It was done first and no she didn't say me per say but seemed to be calling everbody retard's and I did try to go the peaceful route at first
but was then called retard out right so I figured if that was the way she rolled I could roll that way to then maybe she would understand........with some you have to fight fire with fire

Some people prefer to have an open mind about such things. There is no evidence that it is or is not Atlantis or some other ancient city or even what it is at all.
There is only the idea that it must be man made, (due to the right angles) and an extreme curiosity about it.
Close your mind if you wish, but please... don't try to close others minds.

3325.2.2009 14:07

you don't read much do you??
he never said it "was Atlantis"
he said it was something!!
and not want google say's is all
but like most here you'd rather belittle his comments because they don't agree with your thought's but yet you haven't proved his thoughts wrong
after all thoughts are just that "thoughts till proven one way or anouther

Annnnnnnd FIGHT!

3627.2.2009 14:31

varnull, what would the world do without retards! It would be far less amusing.

I am of the island in Greece camp. Historically that fits the best. Just before the Exodus, there were massive amounts of seismic activity in the Middle East. There is an island that had a diked city. The waters of the Mediterranean Sea rose many feet in the last few millennia BC. The fall of the walls of Jericho may have been seismic. Some believe now most of the cities were flattened in Israel had been flattened. When the Jews arrived they were eager for a better religion. The Jews were probably very few in number. The Jews out Egypt were Persian but even by David's time they were Semitic. I just had to throw that wacky theory into this wacky discussion. I fits here.

It is most unlikely that any city from the West would be located in the Atlantic. They didn't have ocean going ships back then they had enough trouble with the Mediterranean Sea. The Allantic Ocean make the sea look like a pond. The Azores would have been populated if there was actually traffic out there.

Oh and let me see, there are no buildings only streets. On land the streets are the first to dissapear. It doesn't take much sediment to hide a road. Or are these roads magic?

Big Foot got a Loch Ness fish sandwich at a Atlantis drive through just the other day. I Googled it

3827.2.2009 17:41

was it good??

and I kave spent a couple day's looking on new google earth for places like this else where in the world ...........I can't find any

so maybe this isn't atlantis.....but it's some thing and not just sonar trace lines

that area of the Ocean is fill of sezmic activity and volcanic activity so could be this was caused by these factors

but that doesn't explain the 90 degree angles
unless like that place off the coast of japan it just happened

nature is weird and we as a race are far from knowing all it's secerts

if they are going to back up their claim that its just scan lines they are going to have send divers to check it out.

and who has enough time one their hands to find something like this on google earth?

Classic gentlemen haha.

But seriously, Atlantis was invented by Plato .... sheesh!

There was no original civilisation that taught us all how read, write and farm ... jesus that's been well researched.

Yeah, and geological activity can produce 90 degree angles.
