Nero offers free burning utility

Written by James Delahunty @ 03 Aug 2009 7:08 User comments (25)

Nero offers free burning utility Nero AG has released a freeware data burning utility for the Microsoft Windows platform. The new freeware tool is limited to data discs and CD, DVD copies, but it is totally free and is not time limited (not to be confused with the 15 day trial of Nero 9). A cut down copy of the software might be exactly what some users were looking for in the first place, as Nero's increasingly bulky releases have prompted criticism of the products.
Of course, a tool like ImgBurn can do pretty much everything, and more, compared to the new Nero freeware tool, but the tool keeps the ease-of-use of Nero StartSmart that might be more attractive to users new to burning. The freeware version will work with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

IMGBurn is a much better prog. This free version of Nero offers to install ASK toolbar/search engine, requires email address for download(from the nero site, not third party sites)and to be reqistered.

saw this over at filehippo, i thought to myself at the time, "there are plenty of free burning apps free that are better than this bloatware".

its a good tool for computer newbs as it looks pretty and offers a simple few click solution but still bloatware imho.

I've always used Nero, never really had a problem with it. I think its the layout/navigation of the program that makes it seem so easy.

crap bloatware.. did anybody ever see nero-linux? what a joke that was.

Don't be fooled people.. this is just like the way they used to give limited function free versions bundled with burners.. get people hooked and then sting them for cash because as we know... people are too stupid to type "free burning programs" into google.

6 is excellent.. good plugins that work well.. 7 seems ok but it's big.. 8 works alright on fista but slows down xp too much.. and 9.. no comment.

It doesn't do anything that can't be done with a few freeware tools.. these huge bloated suites of applications are completely out of date.

I might criticise it for being bloatware.. but I do have to admit the dv capture and import in 8 is excellent. Very often it works where all else fails. Why can't you just rip the bits you want out from all the rest of the crap you don't?

Some make it easy to install the options you want some don't.
Nero needs to get back to being a slim and powerful burn tool that offers good extras not the windose ware monster its become.

Still its better than other pay for burn apps by a mile.....least 7 is :P

I have a nice 6.6.18 final with all the plugins which I install for people for free.. You can't find it anywhere these days.. I guess I should upload it back into the public domain from whence it came all those years ago ;)

I don't burn DVD anymore tho, gearing up to switch over to blu ray archiving this year. ^^

Anything for free is fine by me. While the free program may have some annoyances, it's getting more and more difficult to find anything free on the legit side these days. Maybe they're thinking of the recession and the cash-strapped citizens that have to hold on to their money. Who knows? (shrugs shoulders) - BLUEBOY

Ive been using nero 7 on vista just fine, just make sure you have an later build i think im using 7.8.5.0 and make sure that uac (pah another joke) is turned off before installing.

I agree 8 and 9 dont compair to 7, 6 was probably better for just burning, but some of the features of 7 are a bit of leap forward from 6.

Although its bloated, its not like you have to install the full package, you can just go custom install and pick out the part you want and end up with a trimmer install.

166.8.2009 06:21

I wont go past nero 6, after that its imageburn and vso convert x software is all you need.
with Xp working so fine these days I dont even need nero at all, but I keep 6 installed... Imageburn is the best thing since sliced bread it solved any dual layer burn problems I had...
Donate to image burn they deserve it....
also dvd rebuilder is a very fine program, works with imageburn
and I use cheap junk cd and dvd's with no problems.. WrecK...

I wouldn't include the obsolete convertx in that list.. flick has far more options and just does so much more...

What's that about less and less free programs? .. A little hunting turns up more and more ports of open source applications every day.. get out of that M$ "pay for everything or it's crap" mindset.. it's a lie and you know it. Sooner or later somebody will port k3b and cinelerra and then nero's days are numbered.

Nero 6.6 Ultimate was the best Nero ever. I now use ImgBurn and CDBurnerXP. Both free and lightweight.

Really? is it full functionality? unlimited time? How might I get it?
I purchased a copy of 6.6 and loved it (although the names of the apps were not very intuitive). My windoz machine needed to be reloaded, and I can't find my 6.6 disks. Thanks for your help..

I actually bought V9 when it came out, what a dog. I got my refund, but there are still things that V9 busted, during and even after I de-installed it. As this freebie looks to be V9 cut down I'd say avoid, especially if you have anything from Logitech installed.

Nero6 was their best effort, after that they lost the plot.

216.8.2009 10:11

I've been using Nero 7.11.10.0 Lite (29 MB) for months and months and it does everything I want. After Nero 6, the software turned into a bloated suite of over 100 MB - that's when I stopped upgrading.

Nero Micro does the job for me ie Burning DATA DVD/CD discs (AVI/DIVX)...along with DVDFABPLAT and ConvertX.
Way to early to get excited about Blu-Ray.

For the average Joe that doesn't know much about computers this will be great for anyone else forget it, it is not worth the bother.

Many people I know use to use the free limited v6 Nero and never needed to upgrade that is why Nero stopped giving that away which makes you think why did they feel the need to bloat the program further in the first place and should just sell extra pluggins for people that want more.

I prefer v7 as it's GUI is much nicer and you still have some control of what you want to use and install and still use it as well as ImgBurn which I use the most of the time, it works better for Blu-Ray at least for me and that is what I mostly burn to now since it has become cheaper.

I've tried Nero v9 and it screwed up one of my PC's even after uninstalling it as it doesn't uninstall clean, very poorly programed app. I did buy version 8 but told Nero I would not continue to use their new crap!

I'll have to give Flick a try but if Varnull likes it I'l probably not like it.... LOL "the Devil made me say that, hehehehe..."

If there is a god he sent a message to all burners. It is this; do not, do not, do not give money or your machine freely to NERO. They can do no good for you, except below version 8. Save your burning soul, run from NERO.

And stop buying the gum with Phenolanulsidojsofh in it. You know where the sugar came from.
