Sony goes all out at GamesCom: Slim PS3, Firmware 3.0, price cuts, VOD, PSP Minis

Sony goes all out at GamesCom: Slim PS3, Firmware 3.0, price cuts, VOD, PSP Minis Today at their press conference during the GamesCom 2009 event, Sony has announced the long hyped Slim PS3, along with across the board price cuts on current models, a PlayStation Network update and the addition of Firmware 3.0.

Price Cuts

The price cuts are $100 USD on current models, including 160GB bundles and will be effective in North America as of tomorrow and already effective in the EU.

Firmware 3.0

Firmware upgrade 3.0, set for a September release, will include a lot of aesthetic changes to the XMB as well as the addition of "What’s New, Status Indicator, Friends List, PlayStation Store Shortcuts, Personalization and improved Trophies."

For more information on the upcoming firmware upgrade, watch the official Sony video on it:

Slim PS3

The real big news for the day however, was the launch of the oft-rumored Slim PlayStation 3. The new model will include a 120GB HDD and will launch on September 1st with a pricetag of $299 USD/ 299 EU/ £249 / 29,980 YEN.

The Slim will feature a 32 percent smaller and 36 percent lighter form factor and will also consume 34 percent less power. Notably, the Slim removes the otherOS ability (addition of Linux on partition) but adds Bravia Sync so users can control the PS3 via their Sony HDTV.

PSP News

Beginning October 1st, Sony will be launching PSP Minis, small games (100MB and under), that looks like direct competition to Apple and iPhone App Store. Sony says their will be 50 titles available by the end of the year.

Additionally, the PSP will get a "Digital Reader" by December, that will allow users to read comic books on their handheld from Marvel.

Video on Demand

Finally, Sony announced the launch of a Video on Demand service for the PS3, which will allow gamers in France, Germany, Spain and the UK to download movies straight to their console or handheld.

The service will go live in November with content from 20th Century Fox, Disney-ABC-ESPN Television1, Lionsgate2, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM), Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Starz Media2, Universal2, and Warner Bros.

Some of the titles available at launch will be Angels and Demons; Bruno; The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe; Crank 2; The Dark Knight; Dead Space: Downfall; Gran Torino; Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix; National Treasure; Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl; Public Enemies; Star Trek; Terminator Salvation; Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen; Valkyrie; and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Renters have 14 days to watch the film, and 24 hours to complete watching the film once they have started it.

“PlayStation is becoming the home of entertainment from games to music channels, from creative platforms to virtual pets,” added Andrew House, President and CEO, SCEE. “The addition of the PlayStation Network video delivery service for PS3 and PSP provides a simple way for PlayStation owners to access movie content and enjoy the latest blockbuster whenever and wherever they choose.”

To make buying movies easier, Sony has also launched PSN voucher cards, in €20 and €50 denominations, making it easier for gamers without credit cards to enjoy the services.

So the 80GB large version will be $399, but the new slim version will be $100 cheaper? I was waiting for the price cut to buy a PS3 and I figured the slim version would be around $399-499, but $299? Is there a detailed list of specs for it yet? I have a funny feeling that more than just the ability to run linux has been removed.

No mention of Software PS2 Emulation either :(

I just bought the ps3 maybe a month ago 80gb for 200 used. I'm rather ... at a loss for words at how I feel about the price point for the slim,

Can the PS3 still be hacked? Are there any modchips available for it to play backed-up games? I want to get a PS3, but if it can't get modded, then I'll have to buy an xbox 360, which can be modded.

.

1218.8.2009 19:32

A lot of relatively useless features in the update, and premium avatars is a little over the top but I guess now that means its concrete that we'll never be able to use our own images if they're gonna start having ones you have to buy. At least they got rid of that stupid info bar though I'm not sure if what they replaced it with is any better. With the dynamic themes I wounder if they now have the functionality for gifs.

I'm curious about the ps3 slims specs, its cooling system, etc... Also the fact that they gave Linux the axe is stupid, the only reason not many people used it was the stupid restrictions they put in place combined with their lack of a customizable format option so you're not limited to 10gigs under Linux or the PS OS. Now that they're axing it I guess we're never gonna see the day of full linux functionality on the ps3, which tbh annoys me much more than them getting rid of ps2 bwc.

Not to mention there were PS3-based Linux clusters being sold...taking that away will kill that market. It doesn't make sense either that the slim wouldn't have it because that's a FIRMWARE function, not hardware. Maybe they'll let people selling the PS3 Linux clusters have a special firmware to override this??? Will 3.0 kill it on older PS3s?

1418.8.2009 20:31

Maybe they got rid of the OpenOS because it left the PS3 too vulnerable? I think we just have to look a little harder...

Anyways, great to see a price drop and the slim, my friends are gonna be happy :P

1518.8.2009 20:57

I prefer my big and shiny PS3 :D, but I can't wait for the new Firmware to come in, it looks like an ok improvement.

1618.8.2009 21:18

So after firmware update 3.o we still wont be able to change the color of the font and style? Backward compatibility? VCD playback? The video just looks like a little big planet and god of war advertisement. Who the hell cares about lint being blown along with a horizontal whirlpool? And as for the slim ps3 which btw I'll be getting, I hope I'll somehow be able to transfer the old game save data to it so I dump the ps3 mini van for family use.

Not that it's been particularly useful to most people, but totally removing the capability after having it for 3 years kinda sucks. I can see if some people messing with settings and not paying attention to warnings inadvertently losing everything on their HD due to reformatting it for OtherOS use and Sony wanting to make sure that doesn't happen to the clueless hordes out there. However, if something like that is the case, instead of removing it entirely, maybe make it a 'hidden' option that makes sure only people who know what they're doing can use it.

I also wonder what happens if you put a HD set up for this on an earlier PS3 into the new slim model??? Does it just ignore the OtherOS partition? Does it allow booting from the OtherOS partition??? Does it say the drive needs to be reformatted???

1918.8.2009 22:25

people love bitching about something or another dont they?

$100 price drop, still not happy.

who cares if they removed linux, ANYONE who wanted linux anyway, has a PC with it. im sure 99% of PS3 owners couldnt give a damn, i sure as hell dont, i installed ubuntu once and forgot about it.

half the thickness with the slim :), but shame about the small reduce in hieght being made up by a wider platform, though its still smaller and NO EXTERNAL POWER BRICK!, which is pretty impressive.

also the 120GB HDD is removeable aswell which is FTW :)

the only reason for people to realistically choose one or the other is they can find the older one with games for the same price, or they prefer the 80GBs looks (which IMO i <3 shineyness)

2018.8.2009 22:33

I highly doubt they'll be removing it from the older PS3s. I'm thinking that it'll be similar to the situation with newer PSPs. When the slim came out after the fat PSP, it couldn't play homebrew based on the 1.50FW because it never had it, but with these new PSPs out and newer FW updates (3.71FW I think was the first slim FW) the fat ones could still play, they never lost it regardless.

2118.8.2009 23:26

299 PS3

Now i have a choice pic one up now for 299 or wait for the slim

Linux on the ps3 could have been great if sony let us access more of the ps3's potential, not necessarily all of it but certainly more than we had. Now like I said that its given the axe that's not going to happen as I doubt they'd bother as now the ps3 phats are no longer produced.

2319.8.2009 00:45

Hmmm...$299 would be a great price if it could run linux...making it a very affordable PC that also plays the latest games. Personaly, I don't use linux on mine much since Netflix moved to silverlight...but this is enough to keep me from wanting a slim unit (even if it was an even trade).

Still, I think this is great news. This will lead to modchips and homebrew software...it's about time sony forced the hand of some very tallented programmers. Linux ends up on just about any device with the theoretical capability to run an operating system...it will end up on the PS3slim even if sony does not like it.

They answered it...OtherOS will still work with newer firmware releases on older PS3s, but I guess the firmware will just disable the option on the Slim PS3 models. I still wonder if they're going to make any special arrangements for people selling/building PS3 Linux clusters, though.

There are thousands of PS3s out there being used as Linux server clusters by scientists as a cheaper alternative to buying far more expensive supercomputers. This is the main issue w/ them dropping the ability to do so. Anyone who was making money by building/selling/supporting these clusters is now gonna be f-ed (unless they end up getting some option from Sony not available to the general public.

Doing it on your own on a single PS3 at home to mess around is just a geeky thing to do and play around with (though you can rip BDs with it if you don't have a BD drive on your computer!).

Price Cuts are always welcomed but with the gaming publishers telling to drop the price, or face the possibility of the ps3 being excluded from some future game releases did they have any choice?

Firmware 3.0 it's all a bit lol, the friends list is handy maybe a tie in to windows live messenger would be better.

Slim PS3 is it keeping the full functionality & hardware of the larger model?

it's called "lets see how we can make anyone that purchases anything sony, only purchase sony".

Remember the SD card that most camera companies used, then sony had the memory stick duo at around three times the cost of the SD for the same size.

propertarian lock-ins = monopolies.

Actually, this generation, Sony has been very open-ended:
- You can put any HDD of any brand in your PS3 that you want
- You can use any sort of memory card on the 60GB: SD, MMCards, etc
- You can connect any headset you want from any brand, provided is works on Bluetooth
- You can connect various USB-devices and they will work

Now compare that to the Xbox360 which only accepts propritary HDD's, Memory cards and headsets. This has frustrated me to no end. I could put a Western Digital HDD of 320GB in my PS3, but for my 360 I'm stuck with the (overpriced) HDD's sold only by Microsoft.

It's true that in the past, Sony has been very proprietary as well, especially with notebooks and cameras that only accepted Memory Sticks. But the PS3 is just the opposite: it's the most open-ended console I've ever bought in my life.

Oh no you can't change the colour of the font or style! How will you ever survive!
And firmware can't make backward compatibility possible. Pretty sure it is hardware.

Perhaps, but it certainly isn't advertised as such. The PS3 has a step-by-step guide on how to put a different HDD form any brand in. I'm not tech-savvy so I wouldn't know how to get started on opening and inserting a different brand of HDD in my 360's HDD casing.

Look, if you want to play the 360-fanboy that's your choice and I certainly won't try to convince you to buy this or that console. But your remark about the PS3 being proprietary is plain out wrong! For once we have a console that is the most open-ended any console has ever been, and still fanboys like you feel the need to twist it around.

The facts are there: PS3 works with any HDD and peripheral that matches the necessary specs (2.5" HDD, Bluetooth devices, etc) and the 360 doesn't, or at least isn't advertised as such. The reason is simple: MS earns good money on overpriced peripherals. I paid nearly 10.000 Yen for my 360 HDD which is a pretty steep price.

Hacking has nothing, but then again nothing to do with being open-ended. Blocking hacks is necessary because otherwise too many gamers would just pirate games instead of buying them.

PS3 accepts any brand's HDD, bluetooth device, memory card (SD, Memory Stick, MM) and USB compatible device and you still try to uphold it's the most closed system of this generation? I'm at a loss for words ...

This is exactly why I don't like discussing pros and cons of consoles. No matter what console I talk about and whether it's positive or negative points, the fanboys always jump all over it. It's just so hard to have a logic discussion with fanboys who go "360 sucks!" or "PS3 sucks!" Just acknowledge the facts instead of trying to spin it until it fits in your fanboyish views.

Back on topic. I don't think I'll switch my 60GB launch PS3 for a slim model but I think it's nice people have the choice and the price drops for future buyers.

I also would have liked .mkv support but it seems we'll have to wait little bit longer. Since the PS3 is a DivX certified machine and Divx official adopts .mkv, I would except .mkv support to be added further down the line ... the sooner the better so I won't have to keep converting my .mkv's to .mp4's.

Aw what the hell is up with the plastic finish on the slim. I'm willing to lean more towards the shiny one but that's too bad no word on backwards compatability. I'm sure if people wait long enough they can get the slim in a different finish like the MGS4 ps3.

3219.8.2009 12:31

The only time that I see my PS3 is when i'm putting a disk in it. Dont realy care what it looks like. Guess some people must mount the PS3 on the front/center of their TV Screen.

How is the PS3 the most propietary console? MS makes you buy there hardrives if you ever want more than a few a megabytes on there system. While PS3 uses 2.5in SATA Hardrive. And How does modding your console make them not propietary?

3519.8.2009 13:39

I remember folks griping about the old one being Glossy and dust showing up on it. Cant please everyone.

3619.8.2009 18:49

I'm so sick of people putting down the importance of the OtherOS because Sony decided to drop it. "Pfft, why not just run Linux on a PC!?" That defeats the entire purpose! That feeling of satisfaction you get when you have it all set up, get some emulators on it, and play some Zelda and Mario on a Sony console. Or, God forbid, get some use out of it away from gaming. I can't tell you how much my productivity on school assignments went up when I could just sit on my couch with a wireless keyboard and type a paper out without sitting at a computer desk or having a laptop on my lap.
Any idiot can get Linux and emulators on a PC, that's not nearly as rewarding, I've been doing it for ten years!

And, yes, the price drop will help sales, the PS3 needed that... But, honestly, I'd rather pony up the extra hundred for an old 60GB with full PS2 BC and OtherOS. The Slim PS3 is one hundred dollars cheaper because it's just not worth as much as the good version of the console.

No, I call the companies knowing there is a vulnerability in the system that is being exploited and not doing anything about it "open" (like the wii and the bootloaders).

And backup games are not piracy, it is a legal right (in most countries) to make backups of your original games.
Sure, you can back up them up "legally," but it is ILLEGAL to modify the console to play the backups.

Keep burying your head in the sand :|

On a serious note, Sony should REALLY reconsider adding Other OS support. I don't see it being a hardware side lock, so maybe a future update should open the Other OS feature up again. This reminds me of the PS2 slimline, when they removed the HDD slot for good (V13+).

My brother and four friends are finally getting the PS3 though, so it should be a good year :)

DVDBack23/rvinkebob

Depends on the country modding is not illegal EVERYWHERE.

Now when it comes to updating vulnerabilities well...sony had nearly a couple dozen PS2 revisions.

Hell they can reduce cost and change the pinout around some to screw up the chips just making modchips and copying illegal(face it its all illegal in the US these days and soon copying a bit of script and lyrics will be the same as posting a clip or image, can you say DMCA take down up the ass).

there is a point when IP owners can not cry foul of the natural nature of a fcking open society....

PS3 is by far not "the most open-ended any console has ever been". The original xbox could run 3rd party dashboards ffs, the dreamcast could play burnt games with no modifications. I was not being a "fanboy" in my previous comments, I was stating the facts which you're to belligerent to understand.
Well, in all honesty, first you said that the PS3 is the most proprietary console this generation, but I see you are shifting to previous generation just to 'prove' your point.

As for the two consoles you've mentioned:
- Xbox: I never had one so I can't comment on that. So I'll concede there may have been one console in the past that was less proprietary than the PS3
- Dreamcast: again you are mixing illigal bootlegging with open-endedness of a console. The Dreamcast could easily play back-up games because Sega failed to implement decent security (they thought they were safe with their new hybrid discs). I'll also note that this is exactly what caused the downfall of the Dreamcast: everyone was playing pirated games and only a handful of owners actually still bought discs.

There's also a big difference between purposely making a console open-ended, like the PS3 and realizing later down the line: "oh crap, they cracked our security". The PS3 is open-ended from the get-go and that was a business decision, not a result from poor anti-piracy protection.

Why are you so fervent on finding poor excuses to call the PS3 proprietary when it clearly is not? Does the fanboy-itch really need to be scratched that hard?

[RANT]
I'll also add that piracy on consoles is a BAD thing. I know a small percentage of gamers actually wants to make safety backups of their games, but let's call a cow a cow, shall we? The vast majority of gamers that are whining because they can't play bootlegs on the PS3 are gamers that don't want to buy their games but pirate them instead. It's that exact kind of attitude that ruins the market and I have no respect for such people. You can't pirate games for free? Tough titty, you'll just have to buy them like the rest of us![/RANT]

At any rate, people with no bias will immediately recognize that the PS3 is the single most open-ended console this generation and one of the most open consoles ever. All the rest is irrational Sony-haters blowing smoke.

Sony has exclusive rights to the games that are allowed on the ps3. Ps3 cannot play third party games (=monopolising), whereas the both xbox 360 and wii can play third party games.

And for the record, I am not an xbox 360 fanboy. I own all the next gen consoles and i have determined which one I prefer. If anybody is a fanboy in this thread it is the people getting angry over my first comment.

If the below list denotes the PS3 as "the most proprietary Next Gen system" then I sure as hell learned something new today ~ /sarcasm

NOTHING in your reply answers or contests 3rd party software so your argument is hollow, WiFi and so on has nothing to do with other vendors being able to create and sell software for the PS3! So his argument to 3rd party software support stands!

Now as to the Wii they are trying to prevent further hacking on their consoles with firmware updates and have stopped some of the hacking but there still are more capabilities being added for the console like using a USB HDD again provided your firmware isn't up to date.

I'm not a PS3 fanboy and will not be, so I wasn't sure they even had 3rd party software vendors. Normally Sony is mostly proprietary. I do get a kick out of the statistical sales hog wash which doesn't tell us who allows more 3rd party vendors between the 3 major consoles it really is only about sales! PS3 could have only one 3rd party vendor and in fact the vendor could be a sister company, so as usual these statistics don't really mean much other then possibly proving that Sony does allow other software vendors to build on their system.

I personally won't buy anything Sony makes except for TV's because they limit me with their crap. I have too many friends with expensive Sony DVD players that won't play certain DVDR's or MP3's and so on. I bought one of their expensive Blu-Ray players and it won't play MP3's, Divx, or WMA's, if I would of bought a player from someone else for half the cost I would have these capabilities.

For a mod you sure can be rude can't you, but I’m not surprised.

5120.8.2009 15:40

Well when you deal with rude people on a daily basis who spout misinformation only to get pissed at you for correcting them all the time what do you think a person is not human or something?

What I find most amusing is how people try to avert the support of misinformation one minute to only post some other comment that has no relevance to what was originally being discussed to cover up the fact they didn't know WTF they were talking about to begin with!...

The PS3 Slim with a 120 GB Harddrive is $299 US, 299 EU (£249 for the UK) & 29,980 YEN and will be available September 1st 2009 worldwide. So there is a price cut everywhere.

Yes, because i really meant third party games as in third party publishers. Wtf is up with the ps3 fanboys and using comments out of context, every time I post in a ad news in a gaming related discussion a horde of ps3 fanboys twist what I posted. When i said third party games i meant backed up games... sony still owns the rights to the multiplatform "third party games".

... What!?

Newsflash, buddy, no company "Let's you" play your definition of "Third Party" games. Microsoft bans you from Xbox Live, Nintendo is still playing firmware vulnerability tug-of-war, and no one has yet found a way to boot burned PS3 games, let alone burn PS3 games.

You used to be able to play some games made for Linux, but Sony being the brilliant people they are, removed support for it in the Slim.

And Sega didn't, either, later models of the Dreamcast couldn't play just any disc... The protection has been cracked since then, of course.

Grasping at staws Oner, grasping at straws. Look at the sales for PS3 and Xbox 360.

So what if ps3 was released a year later, sony had a year longer than ms to create their console. If ms had 1 more year there probably would have never been rrod, hence swamping ps3 sales. if the ps3 is really as good as you say it is, 1 year would not of mattered.

Btw from what I read SMG is a load of bs... they gave fallout 3 and GTA IV a better score than Left 4 Dead ffs.

Oh, and what is the point in answering your inane rhetorical questions, you and I both know you are twisting the truth.

Umm no, I never said ps3 doesn't have 3rd party games in respects to 3rd party publishers. I said that it could not play 3rd party games as in backed up games. Hence my comment about Oner twisting the truth, as he knew what I meant but could not think of a proper response, so he twists the truth to suit himself.

Also a sale is a sale. In that 24 million ps3 units sold they did not deduct the regrettable ones, such as my purchase.
This is true but you have many more dissatisfied WII and 360 owners since they have higher numbers and all.

Also the PS3 would be toast if it had not out sold the 360 game wise every few months, so at the end of the day its doing well, it could have done alot better as could have the easy brake oven if it did not cook itself to death..

PS:you are doing a fair amount of twisting just cause you can;t let someone be right on the internet.... oh sorry I am nit picking again :X

Wow, I never said that sony had to, or ms didn't. I was using it as an example, I don't know how you couldn't of figured that out by yourself.

@ Zippy like I said if ms released the xbox 360 at the same time as the ps3 there would probably be a lower failure rate than ps3 and more features (hdmi input etc). Btw I can let Oner be right, I'm just waiting for him to post something right.
I doubt lower, looking at the issues with the mobos and drive units they are skimping on to much and packing to much into them to make them with ultra low fail rates like the WII.

Jasper's are well below 10% failure rates though.

More like 15% but whatever.

7825.8.2009 23:24

so what were the fail rates of the xbox a year after it came out? and when did hdmi appear?

it snot sony's fault MS rushed a console, its MS fault, for market share.

Frankly they could have easily worked it out of the 360 with the first revision but they didn't, they wanted to shovel it off on consumers to the point they had no other choice but to do something...
