Xbox 360 Elite sales see strong growth in UK

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 02 Sep 2009 12:32 User comments (25)

Xbox 360 Elite sales see strong growth in UK According to GamesIndustry.biz, sales of the Xbox 360 Elite unit had surged 43 percent during the "bank holiday weekend in the UK," following the recent price cut of the system to GBP 199.
"Sales of Xbox 360 are up 43 percent," says the report. "Essentially, looking at the price, obviously it's the Elite that's done the business with those sales."

The report does say that Sony will most likely put up similar or stronger numbers this week, following the release of the Slim PS3 and the $100 USD price cut on all other models.

In the UK, Microsoft has raised the price of the Arcade model from GBP 129 to 159, and has begun phasing out the Premium model, leaving just the Elite and Arcade.

It'll be interesting to see if the slim beats elites sales, I doubt it will though.

I would hardly be suprised...$300 for a bluray player is a decent deal on it's own, even if you ignore the whole gaming/internet/media center thing. On the other hand, the 360 & wii are just video games.

price drop = more sales, ppl are suckers for a bargain.

i would expect a rush of the ps3 sales for the first couple of months at least, sony do have a very strong marketing/blogging division as most major courps.

The Xbox offers more games & more games with a high metacritic score.
If you really are into it for the games then Xbox is IMHO the one to go for.

If you want Blu-ray then a dedicated Blu-ray player is the better option, again IMHO.

PS3 as a Blu-ray player is not silent - when the fans start up they are noisey and intrusive.
It is not expecially user-friendly to set up properly either (there are a ridiculous number of steps to take to get it to bitstream HD audio properly - and only the slim can do this).

I expect the slim to spike PS3 sales as those who were wiating for it and/or the price-cut jump.
Whether that's sustained for more than a couple of months is the interesting question.

There's a 250gb Elite bundle coming out, in Europe at least, in Oct.
It offers a 250gb (Jasper) Elite, 2 wireless controllers (always a sensible & nice deal) and a copy of Forza 3.
It's priced at just under of the current price of the PS3 slim in Europe.

I expect that one to be a big hit this X-mas.

I wouldn't be too scared to use it as a standalone Blu-Ray player. They are making the slim so that it is much quieter than the original PS3.

Enough with PS3 talk though. I'm excited to see that countries overseas are catching on to the 360. It's always fun to play/destroy foreign players. haha

I really don't know why they keep saying the 360 has so many more games then the PS3 and they're all super amazing. I bought a 360 for $90 to mod and of all the games that I have downloaded for it, not one is an exclusive. When I think of 360, I think of GoW and Halo 3. GoW2 felt like a Madden game to me in the sense that there wasn't enough added to the game to make it worth a whole 'nother $70 or whatever, even though I can get it for free it's not for me. Halo 3 I think has been the most overhyped game to date(or maybe GTA4, both similar). In my opinion I thought it was the worst of the trio, the first being the best. I think my PS3 has better exclusives, these are what I own and play: Resistance 2 (while 1 sits), Killzone 2, LBP, MGS4, Motorstorm (don't have 2 yet lol), GT5P and MAG (beta, from what it looks like I think this really is going to be an awesome game, and there is no lag what so ever, which I think is crazy). Basically, I think if you are going to mainly play multiplatform games, then probably 360 is the way to go but if you are looking for a variety of exclusives then PS3 is the way to go.

It's simply a statement of fact that the Xbox has more games and it has more games with a high metacritic score, compared to PS3.

You opinion about this and of the Xbox/PS3 and the various games is really neither here nor there.

In my view both systems offer more games than any of us will probably ever bother buying and they both look and sound the same.

(although as Ghostbusters proves once again, for all that supposed 'technical superiority' on cross-platform games the PS3 version is often the poor relation)

Well then the same could also be said that for over the past year or so the PS3 has had higher Metacritic scores than it's competitors. Or am I just excluding data to fit my point or something...:rollseyes

And as far as the Ghostbusters "argument" goes why do people choose to exclude other titles like Batman or even Unreal Tournament (ZOMG!?1/> 2 Unreal Technology based games on the PS3 that's actually BETTER than what the 360 can do!?! How is that possible!?!?) or is the obvious fact that the difference lies on the actual DEV MAKING THE GAME & NOT the hardware itself? Hhhmm I wonder?

The more games argument doesn't wash & never will,95% of games are just utter rubbish from either side whether it's the graphics or just the general way the game plays or more than likely the engine the game uses which is still what was used on the last set of consoles & besides just how many more 360 games are there anyway, not enough to matter anymore me thinks.

The sales thing, well some of it's obviously from people who were waiting for a price drop & as both drop even more then more sales will come & even more if either gets even bigger hdd's,the real question now is will the 360 hold it's lead,i'll go out on a limb & yep the reason why i believe that will be the case is all to do with the original xbox & is why i bought the 360 first instead of a PS3 the backup of games was a bonus from the 360.

Last time i bought a PS2 it cost $599. nz it was the larger PS2 back in dec 03,a year later i got a xbox 1,i played the box once & because at that time i was into driving games it was a bugger to use the controller so it went back collecting dust, the following year over xmas in 05 my nephew turned up & stayed the weekend so the box came back out, when he left it didn't come again till the following year in 06,that's when i decided to start playing it after seeing my nephew play Halo 2,well it was the PS2's turn to gather dust as i got more into the box since i was now into fps games, i couldn't believe the difference in both the consoles, that essentially is why i went 360 first tho it was only Dec 2008 that i got a premod 360,that friends is why i believe the 360 sells so well even tho it was known to have heating issues it's the reason i went 360 purely because of the game experience & i wasn't even on live

Wow, some people just can't abide seeing PS3 trail Xbox in anything, no matter if it is the truth, right?.

However you try and spin it the fact is as I said.

Xbox offer more games.
That's simply the truth of the matter.

Xbox offers more games with a high metacritic scroe.
That too is simply the fact of the matter.

Oh you mean like how you said you can't count previous RROD's anymore? I guess you can't take it when it is thrown back at you the same way you give it. That's okay. My point was made.

Oner

I wondered if you'd stick to the topic or start throwing in other unrelated comments.

You've been using inappropriate stats and comments to bash on Xbox in the other thread, and it's been pointed out repeatedly so I guess you're just determined, no matter what is said, to keep on doing it.

OK, you think you've proved you point, I and others disagree.

Similarly here I'm sure you think you've done whatever it is you imagine you're doing.

Work away.
I'm done debating anything with you.

Have a nice day.

Wow, you are pointing out some terrible games. Resistance 2, GT 5, Killzone , MGS4 (which isn't going to be exclusive for much longer), Motorstorm?? And you want to compare them to Halo 3, Gears of War 1 & 2? How about Fable, Mass Effect, Forza, or even Left 4 Dead.

Besides games, how about trying to even come close to Xbox Live?? Playstation Home is such a piece of crap, and the only arguement about it being good is that it is free. I'd much rather pay a $40 for 13 months and get access to a ton more content and a better online experience.

Sorry, but the RROD arguement needs to be given up on. How about the Yellow Light of Death that the PS3 seems to get. It's not like it's common, and I only see it happen to older consoles. Every one of my friends have Xbox's, and the only one that has ever had a problem is the one that has his xbox stuck in an shelf with absolutely no ventilation. Any system is going to have problems with that.

That is exactly it ~ A Debate ~ but when you post inaccurate info and choose to omit information that is right there in the same document you so vehemently profess then there really is no argument. Just clarity of the whole picture. Not just what YOU plucked out of it.

Plus how can you say I am the one posting unrelated info when YOU are the one who did! All you have to do is look UP ^^^^ as people were discussing the SALES of the 360 NOT Blu-ray, PS3 Fan noise and such...

Omitting what? The percentage of sale's growth in the UK for Xbox's? Here you go --->

It's not that hard to find. Besides, the article actually tells you.

Or the fact that you are omitting where you are coming up with the bizarre statement of the Unreal Engine being based on PS3 technology? The Unreal engine has been around forever and is based on computer hardware, which goes for both systems. In fact, some developers are having trouble getting the Unreal Engine to work on the PS3 --->

You don't know the whole discussion between me & InterestX (from other threads etc.) so you are coming into this 3/4 late, plus your reading comprehension is skewed since I never said that the Unreal engine is based from PS3 tech. I said those 2 games run BETTER on the PS3 in reference to the off comment about Ghostbusters. But whatever, forget it.

Edit: Actually this needs to go to PM's anyway to avoid this thread getting closed from here on out.

Unreal Tournaments infamous startup slogan Nvidia the way its meant to be played

UT has always been enhanced for Nvidia cards, the PS3 is no exception to this rule.

202.9.2009 19:24

thing is you see games liek uncharterd 2 and killzone 2 and wonder why devs complain about the PS3 being less powefull etc etc, when games can look and play liek the 2 above. its just that they are lazy.

going back to the article, im not surprised, i would have been more surprised IF the arcade had higher sales, as it increaced in prices :D

what i am annoyed by sony is that the elite and slim ar $300 in the US, but the slim is £250 here where the elite is £200.

how does that happen?!

i already have my 80GB so i dont mind but it really is not fair at all.

212.9.2009 22:03

I highly doubt that they don't come out with incredible game because of laziness. It's all about money and those game required tons of it. In a time where the economy is not the greatest, publishers don't hand out alot of money to developers to make a product unless it's a sure fire hit (hence almost every big name game that has come out in the last year being a sequel!)

I think he was referring more to when multiplatform games will look good on the 360 and bad on the PS3... Most games today seem to be neck and neck now in terms of looks but there's the odd slap in the face every now and then...

Edited for content that violates forum rules.

@ shaffaaf It's because M$ and $ony can charge anything they want in any country. In Australia the slim is $499, $499 aud = $402 usd, that's $100 difference.

And with that said this will be my last afterdawn news post (unless the following post is to hard to resist). To all those ps3 fanboys I have argued with, I bid you good day and I hope you have a fun time on your medicre gaming console.

My buddy bought a 360 elite a few days ago, and I went through live. I don't know what you are talking about! There was no "home" feature like on the PS3...there were areas for certain games, but there was nothing like home square, the arcade, or the EA complex...there was something like the PSN (where you download games, videos, etc...), but it had only 27 games available...and they were all ancient. Plus, you can't just buy them...you have to buy points in packages and then spend the points, leaving extra points. I don't see how anyone can claim that live is better, even for free...it has less content and functionality. About the only thing I could find in the 360 that I could not find a similar version of in the PS3 was the netflix feature...but that's because the Xbox is made by the same people that made the codec that netflix uses.

Also, my fat PS3 is very quiet...I can't hear it over the ceiling fan...and the ceiling fan isn't noisy. Plus the fan barely runs while playing bluray movies. The 20/60GB models were hot-boxes that needed noisy fans running at full speed, but these models are no longer available new.

Wow, you must be totally delirious. I've extensively been on both machine's online offerings, and there is a reason we pay for Xbox Live. Simply put, it's better. Xbox Live has demos for almost every game (not just 27 ancient games). They offer much more DLC than the PS3, and the online buddy system just is no comparison. Every time I go on Xbox live, there is something updated, such as an Gears 2 all niter or and Xbox live exclusive demo.

But I agree, I have never really had a problem with the Blu-Ray playing too loud. Maybe someone needs to clean their fans out our something...
