Microsoft performs another round of Xbox Live account banning

Written by Andre Yoskowitz (Google+) @ 01 Nov 2009 1:43 User comments (75)

Microsoft performs another round of Xbox Live account banning Microsoft has confirmed this weekend that the company has performed another round of Xbox Live account banning, killing the service for gamers using pirated copies of games.
"We have taken action against a small percentage of consoles that have been modified to play pirated game discs," said a Microsoft spokesperson, via IGN. "In line with our commitment to combat piracy and support safer and more secure gameplay for the more than 20 million members of our Xbox LIVE community, we are suspending these modded consoles from Xbox LIVE."

The company would not confirm when the bannings started, but the Internet has been flooded with reports of consoles being banned as early as Tuesday.

Continued Microsoft: "All consumers should know that piracy is illegal and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs violates the Xbox LIVE terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox LIVE. The health of the video game business depends on customers paying for the genuine products and services they receive from manufacturers, retailers, and the third parties that support them."

So does this mean all systems with any version of iXtreme will be banned with there next updates?

21.11.2009 1:59

I love keeping my 360 offline. I play on-line on PC if I ever do (very few games, all legit of course). I don't need to hear idiots talking. I've seen my friend playing on Live, seems like there are more morons on there that I really do not need to get in contact with (I hate social networking). I also do not feel like forking over the $50 for a gold subscription with the risk of being banned (console is release model with Hitachi and 1.51 firmware; yes I can direct-boot wave 4 games so suck on that). I'll continue to play Rock Band, GH, etc with people I know.

They're all potential targets, but not all of them will be banned. It seems that they flag modders and every few months or so ban some random ones.

41.11.2009 3:32

Don't really need live or online play that much, I've always had more fun LANing (or local offline/splitscreen in some rare cases) with friends.

51.11.2009 9:36

I cant say anything negative about the people who play modded consoles b/c i have done it in the past on PS1 and PS2. To each his own. But i will say that those who get a game two weeks earlier than everyone else and then are stupid enough to go online playing a unreleased game is just asking for trouble. That like standing in the middle of a major interstate and expecting not to get hit.

Have a friend who was playing ultimate alliance 2, and the new madden online before it was released. Now.... he is going to have to buy another console b/c he got banned last week. Also his xbox was modded by a guy who works for microsoft so no one will be exempt. Unless they are playing offline.

Does anyone know if those who played with modded console still get to have wins posted in their ranking for that game. I got tekken 6 the first day it came out and the next day i went online and some guy had like 300+ wins already. I played all night and only had time to play about 50 matches so it should have been almost impossible for the guy to have 300 wins already. I did see a guy in second place ranking who had played about 140 matches but that was possible and i could have acheived it myself had i started playing the first day the game came out.

Your statement is moot and pointless! This article doesn't apply to you and you're not an XBox Live Sub and no one cares about whether you play XBox online or not. This article is for those who do play online.

As for the banning............GOOD. Anyone who mods a nice system like XBox and voids a warranty is foolish. Besides...........they are generally the same people who cheat online too. I ask you all, what fun is there in playing a game that you know you're going to win?

71.11.2009 10:41

I hope I'm not banned... Last time I was on was on last Wednesday and that was just to talk to my friends while I played the PS3 lol

I always play verified games after they are released... I think it's dumb to play games before they're released because it's obvious enough that your console is modded and even more so if the game is not patched correctly... You don't know that until retail is released.

nah it deserves to be hacked. to many defects. a person shouldnt have to go through xclamping stuff just to play a game. the ps3 is better anyway.

2 years of having a modded box and still no ban for me. then again its not like im sitting on top of a giant rack of burnt games. though i do have the DVD-DLs to do that.

i only copy hard to find games, most of them are from gens passed. does anyone know how much a copy of Lunar 2 costs take a guess.

101.11.2009 17:55

So this is what happened. I turned my xBox on this past friday (October 30th) at about 9pm EST, and I had a terms of service violation. My console was banned from xBox live. It would still play games, just not online.

I got my xbox modded with the iXtreme about a month ago from a guy that's done a lot of my friends, the weird thing is I had never gotten around to burned games, and played only 2 of my purchased games (COD 4 and 5) online.

Anyways I had to buy a new xbox, lesson learned.

111.11.2009 21:12

is it really worth it to risk going online playing copied games?

121.11.2009 21:22

If anyone really cared about Live, they wouldn't mod their 360. I modded my 360 and I'm online all the time. I'm just not stupid with playing pre-released and modified games. If and when I do get banned, I really couldn't care less.

131.11.2009 21:35

IMO, they are talking about people playing major releases early like ODST, Borderlands, MW2, and Forza 3. If they was banning people for just having modded machines, the number would be much higher and they'd probably do a better PR about it too.

141.11.2009 22:05

i have my 360 modded with the latest 1.6xtreme and my games are directly burned from actual games. do i still need a stealth patch for my games?

-The best part about this generation of systems is the online play. It is more than half of most new games. If you are not taking advantage of this, you are waisting a console. Granted, $50 a year to play games that you pay through the nose for is a bit much for me, that's one of the things that made be buy a PS3.

-I can't say I agree with the "Nice System" part, but I certainly agree with the warranty part...I wouldn't mod my PS3 if it was possible, and the PS3 is more reliable than the 360.

Bottom Line: They ban memory cards that cannot be used in any kind of piracy...the only suprise about them banning modded consoles is that they don't do it more often and more drasticly (like banning consoles that are "modified" by use of a non-microsoft headset).

Flashing the xbox 360 does not void the warranty if you do it correctly.

And your proof that the ps3 is more reliable than the xbox 360 Jasper chipset is where???

And microsoft would detect that how? They can't even detect most of the xbox 360 consoles that have been flashed.

Myself and a my friends survived this ban wave, although I don't think this will be the last ban wave.

So?

if you mod your X360 and are banned, is that only from pirated games? or a total blackout. Seems a little cruddy on Microsoft's part if you played one pirated game, but spend 90% of your time playing a game you bought.

I totally understand the idea of "one bean, ruins the whole burrito" approach. But shouldn't they instead find a way to make you verify that the game is genuine before you can log in instead of killing someones entire Live account? I can tell you if i had to buy another 360 because my $50 paid Live account was killed, they'd either owe me some money back or i'd just get a PS3 instead.

What they don't realize is, now is NOT the time to piss off their customers (Banning accounts, raising the cost of Live!, etc). Gamers have options now.

I wanted to correctly mod my 360 I bought on EBay and keep the warrenty valid (I had my g/f's hairdryer all ready to go). Low and behold I open the it and the warrenty sticker has 1/4th of it missing. It'll be interesting to see if the drive is flashed already when I get the probe in the mail this week.

Killing is bad and wrong, killing is Badong.

Microsoft only bans the consoles for this not your account, and the raised cost of live is just a rumor.

There we have it kids.. I know how they detect flashed consoles, but I'm not telling.. (trade secret.. and I promised somebody high up to never give out the contents of our discussion about detection methods) Lets put it like this.. it's nothing like everybody thinks.. There are 3 or 4 different approaches which are used in different parts of the system.. it's a good method and can actually be got around... but you need to get M$ involved for the get out to work.
It's got nothing to do with firmware version.. nothing at all.. these stealth firmwares and patches are smoke and mirrors.. I mean... HOW THE HELL can a firmware writer tell you it's safe when they don't know how the mods are detected in the first place?

Simple fact of the matter is this.. use a flashed console on their system and they will ban the console.. sooner or later. I think people can draw attention to themselves too, but that doesn't seem to be the primary detection method in every case.. of course the idiots with upstream developer only dashboards and a list of unreleased and out of region games are just asking for it...
M$ are sly.. they don't ban everybody at once, they never have, and there is a good reason why. If they did then the thousands all banned over the same weekend might put 2+2 together and hit the right answer.. banning in spurts and deliberately leaving people who don't run cheats or abuse the stats suits their purposes and keeps them in the good books of the people who don't play burns and don't cheat.

do we need to keep having this discussion? .. it's been going on and on and getting nowhere for years.

Oh.. no point asking me privately for a "nudge nudge.. wink wink" bit of info in private.. you can ask around the people I have known for years and they will confirm I haven't even told them.. I have dropped enough hints for them to get an idea how it all works, but not enough to be used as proof against me or anybody else. About all you will get from my pals is that I'm one of the few people who was in a position to know the info, that I have the contacts at M$ who were because of my position prepared to discuss methods with me, and that in all the years I have never betrayed the trust between myself and a M$ senior exec... You will also probably be told that I'm no friend of M$ but personal ethics are a strange beast... May not like the company, but that doesn't mean I can't respect privacy and trust between a M$ staff member and myself.

Hello, I'm new and had a question. I have two systems, one out of the box the other flashed. I switch hard drives between the two. Any thoughts if I will be affected by the ban?

You obviously have got not clue about xbox 360 modding. Try going on xbox live with a version of xtreme (not ixtreme) and play a backup that has not been ABGX verified. You WILL be banned next ban wave.

Ummm no, they don't ban everyone at once because they can not detect everyone. There are plenty of people who have had modded xbox's since the days of xtreme and are still not banned.

Also, microsoft does not ban consoles for "cheating" in games. The most they do is either an account ban, but usually only just banning them from the game they cheated on.

mine was benq and with the latest 1.61 just to let people know i dont play games early and the only game i played with the new firmware was tekken 6 ??????

I don't have long term numbers for the new chipset...it has not been out long enough. However, I do know that far more 360 systems have gotten the RROD than PS3 systems with the YLOD in total.

It wouldn't be that hard...they are able to detect the difference between their memory cards and aftermarket memory cards made just for the 360...I am sure they could detect a different BluTooth ID on a wireless headset, or even a different resistance on a plug-in headset (but who would want a headset that plugs into a wireless controller? What's the point of wireless if you have wires?).

This maybe so,but why you got a flaming is the way you said it,if the information you have is so privvy and you respect the privacy of your friends/informants....C.E.O's,etc,etc then why did you mention it ? the whole idea of this privacy and respect with any kind of knowledge is not to say anything about it at all,Yes you could be Bill Gate, hell you could be The Duke Of Edinburugh (exscuse the spelling on that one)no-one cares...no sarcasim intended..
Bottom line is if you know something as sensitive as you know/claim to know and point out that it's come from a reliable source from M$ and that it was your friend and you had told them that whatever they tell you stays between you and them, well thats how it should stay instead of coming on here and telling everyone.....see where i'm coming from ? If you are meant to keep it under your hat...keep it under your hat, because what you have just done is more than likely just cost you your trust between these "credible" contacts.

No, it was directed at scum101. I understand what you are saying, I just think it's kinda dumb when people go around saying "I know stuff but I can't tell you," in any situation...

is there any easy way to get rid of the "ban"
throw your banned box in the micro for 5 minutes, with a pack of Ramon Noodles.

when your house burns down because your Micro Door blew open cause of the Microwave shield in the xbox. you will then be unbanned

with all do respect you knew the risks before you did it, and now its caught up to you.

im sure the same will happen to me eventually. as for now i'm living with the moment.

that's not quite how it works, they cant see every thing but they do know certain things such as BIOS details there is one at every boot you think that ball with the X on it is just for looks. there is a small storage capacity within the xbox itself just enough to record a few logs of Hardware ID mismatches and Hardware Failure

Hardware ID mismatches = immediate flag which more than likely will result in your ban.

Hardware Failure +3 equals flag inspection. if its your DVD-Rom drive that failed more than three times, your living on borrowed time.

as these are logged and sent out every time you connect to live you cant hide from it.

people think MS seats there and finds people to ban. when its your console rating you out to the live servers.

So your saying, powering the xbox on without the cd drive connected to it, will send MS a hardware error, and they will flag you. This results in an instant ban?

no thats not a Hardware ID mismatch, every piece of hardware in each and every xbox is stamped with a digital ID the drive's may be the same the may even have the same Hardware tag. but the ID is different in every xbox

not having the power cord connected to the drive is counted as a failure you can have up to 3 of these. any more and the xbox Tells Bigbrother Down in Redmond that Somethings not right. this doesn't mean immediate ban it means someone or some machine will try to see how it failed by reading the log your xbox sent.

hence your riding on borrowed time, as all they have to do is type in some nice little commands that make the xbox squeal like a captured German.

sometimes they just ignore it, like in my case having a launch console they more than likely thought it was just an overheat issue or perhaps at the time it was modded they were swamped with Hardware failure logs

Nah, its fundamental. i don't condone piracy nor do i care for all these locks they put on hardware. the way i see it encryption is System Performance overhead, in software application i could reduce that overhead by using little or no Copy Protection i could maximize performance. however locking the hardware down like its Fort Knox your stuck to what MS gives you and they don't give you alot. you see Software Devs are loosing out on this move Simply because there being lazy they think just be cause there hardware Is Locked out that there games cant be copied. Hardware should always be unlocked if the software writers wish to limit its performance than so be it they can lockdown there software. it should never be the other way around.

your always going to get hackers with the soul intent on hacking into software, its a big game to them, reminds me of the robocop dongle for the amiga, so sure was the game company that it couldnt be hacked they put it in a game mag, the game was hacked overnight and mega trained, were theres a will theres a way.

I hate to sound like a fanboy, but you can swap parts in and out of your PS3 all you want without fear of being banned. Hardware like hard drives are not locked, and you can put in a hard drive from any manufacturer without issue. In spite of all this, there is no way to pirate PS3 software...and even with all these locks and bans, people are still able to pirate 360 games!

466.11.2009 7:01

Fuq M$ sorry asses. I bought the console for the games selection not the console. both mine are modded. Not so i can pirate but so i dont have to buy multiple copies of the same game to play with friends at my house on games that should have had multiplayer built in, & also so when i go offshore i can leave my originals at home so i wont get them stolen. Until these fuq faces get it right im gonna do whatever i can to do it myself. they can go pound sand for all i care...right up their butts. just you (M$) wait cuz when that secondary boot program gets finished youre finished cuz you know what the next step is after that? An alternative to LIVE thats what you nickel & dimeing bitches. And i wont be taking any more of your "updates" either. id rather update my 12 gauge and intercept 1 of your 360 shipments and go all Officespace on em. your too damn big for britches M$. googles gonna getya!! til then im gonna enjoy switching guts outta every piece o shit u guys make that messes up & take it back to the store so they can send it back to you. Maybe one of these days ill drop a worm on ya just for shits an giggles.

If the ps3 was as cheap as the 360 was, the ps3 would most likely have been hacked by now. I heard that C4EVA (the guy that hacked the 360) is trying to hack the ps3 now (I don't know whether that is true though).

,,,a little tip for you all before you get banned - i'm using ix1.6, so is my friend & he got banned today.. he's played the exact same games as me & his 360 is identical to mine, both early models with sammy ms25 drives... the only difference between his n mine - ive played & completed modern warfare 2 - disconnected from live & i changed my system date to the 11th november,, thats irrelevant though as i didnt go on live & wasnt intending to do so until the 11th - so i wasnt detected as playing a game that wasnt available in the shops..
what did i do,, before i connected back to live i cleared my system cache, formatted my hard drive & then performed the hardware reset on my 360 - i then put my original of cod4 on the tray & rebooted with the network cable connected & then retrieved my gamertag.. my console took a game update & its now online - no ban as of yet.. ive also had a dabble on the sky player too, restarted it a few times.. all good.. i dont intend putting a copy game in & playing online for a while.. i also have another friend who uses old xtreme1.2 i think,,, he's always had that firmware & never been banned on any of his consoles - i believe he's running 2 360s on that fw - both unaffected (he hasnt play the backup of halo odst as i wouldnt run on his old fw.. fyi - backed up games used in my friends banned 360 & all patched & verified with ABGX - COD4, dirt2, halo odst, grid.. i also noted that when i compared my friends games list to mine online that odst had dissappeared from his game list - this may be significant !!! its my belief that the firmware has little to do with the bannings,, possibly a case of deliberately leaked games to entrap the modded comunity.. as for halo odst - im glad i tried before i bought it as id've been gutted at spending over 40 for it - its simply not worth it - i would however say that Modern Warfare 2 is worth buying !! just my opinion.. oh & for all the haters - why am i running a hacked 360 - how many games have you paid full whack for on the strength of a good advertising campaign only to find the game is absolute trash.. i.e fallout 3 - biggest waste of cash ever !!! i say stuff the laws - i should be allowed to back up my own games & run them in my system to protect my investment - especially when a very fragile piece of plastic costs more than some people earn after a hard days work !! & in the absense of a playable demo i will always download a pirate to try first - if its really good i will buy it - if not i'll ditch it..

I was playing a legit copy of Forza 3 and my system got banned. I had a Lite-on drive and flashed it with ixtreme 1.61 and wasn't playing any street dated games or games that haven't been released yet (this has also occurred with some of my friends who had their systems modded) I was wondering if anyone has any information on any new firmware release or anyway around this situation.

Yea i was... I believe anyone with a modded system is at risk after the new winter update... I also have a belief that microsoft is banning people so they would actually buy a copy of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 instead of copying it.

Lol, this isn't actually a forum, it's just a news discussion. This is the xbox 360 discussion forum. Anyway, the xbox 360 has an on board memory unit called the cache. The general consensus is that the xbox 360 stores the game log's in the cache, then sends the logs to big brother the next time it console is connected to live. You will only get banned if you connect to xbox live though. Reverting to original firmware will not prevent a ban as the damage is already done.

Ok... I'm just going to try to clear things up (for my sake), even if the game, say for example, Borderlands is a burned copy and you ripped it from the disc and stealth patched it and all, even if you reverted back to original firmware before they turn on their systems they will still get banned? Well, they're not going to get for sure. But the xbox 360 records the game info on the cache. So if a dodgy game is played offline, the console could/will be banned when they go online. Reverting the firmware back to the original will most likely do nothing.

If you want to play a burned game offline just buy a cheap xbox (either rrod or banned) and flash it.

there should put up a site for people selling there banned machine i would like one for off line games (cheap of corse) wink wink

638.11.2009 1:32

My friend has two machines that he bought simultaneously from best buy a year ago. They both had the new liteon drive and I flashed both using the same tool and firmware. Oddly enough, one of his xboxes would play his HAWX and prototype backups while the other one would only give me the XBOX 360 screen when he tried to play. The machine that would play these games got banned on 11-4. Can anyone explain this?

However, here's the real delema. He's fine with only having one machine for xbox live but he needs divx/xvid codecs on both machines to play videos from the network attached storage drive. Ironically, the non-banned machine (machine 1) can play videoes while offline but the banned xbox 360 (machine 2) must be online to play videos (i screwed this up a few weeks ago using the DRM transfer tool).

I heard something about swapping serial numbers to unban a machine. Would it be possible to swap the serial numbers such that the banned console (machine 2) becomes unbaned and can download the codec? If I did this, would the codec on machine 1 (now banned due to the serial) still be present and work?

If not, is there anyway for both machines to be able to play videos from the NAS?

648.11.2009 2:09

I was wandering if the motherboard being a factor in the bans has been considered yet? As in they may be able to read the firmware off of the drive only from certain motherboards.

I ask you all, what fun is there in playing a game that you know you're going to win?
seriously...without hackers/modders there wouldnt be developers..its the hacker who finds holes in shit and then the developer has to find a way of fixing it..its evolution and you sir dont belong here. where would society be if people didnt take things apart to see how they worked and make them different..we would still be pushing hay with *bleep* horses on a wagon because no one tried to advance. just because people mod there consoles does not make them cheaters or bad people..maybe some of us would like a good time without having to pay $60 bucks for a game that we havent been able to play and even see if we like yet. and maybe some of us just like the challenge of taking something apart that isnt supposed to be able to be changed and make it change. sure some people cheat, and alot of people think hackers/modders are bad people..but believe it or not the hacker is the one who will decide the planets technological security while constantly pushing boundaries forcing change and expansion. sure there are some "bad eggs" that cross the line..but thats like saying all african american people are bad because some of them are gang members! its retarded and stereotyping a person for there brain is nonsense.. you should be banned for having a small mind.

Humans have brains? .. that's a new one on me XD

Case proved earlier in this thread... anyway.. I give up trying to argue with arrogant idiots who refuse to accept a simple statement of the facts as they stand. Got to love asshats who demand the leaking of industrial secrets (an international crime) as the only proof they will accept of something which a couple of phone calls to a VP in M$ console division would verify. Idiot still doesn't know who I am... and it shows the sheer arrogance of people who put pointless titles above real knowledge. It's a scream isn't it Rich?

To the person who asked "do the mobo's have anything to do with the bans" .. yes, but only in so much as they have a unique identifier for every console.

"can you get banned even if you revert back to original firmware" .. yes.. people who have consoles with nothing more than a M$ replaced dvd drive have been banned, they have also been unbanned after protesting the point. (can idiot face see the clue yet??.. nah.. still too brainless!!)

"why just the account and not the console" That depends how you have been flagged first by the system. Account bans are handled by a different department to console bans. Bungie etc pass forward account abusers to the live system admins who implement those kind of bans, it doesn't mean that the console will not also get banned at a later date.

"why now" .. silly season draws near, what better time to kick a load of people and force them to yet again reach for their wallet at the same time boosting the seasonal sales figures?

Remember people.. everything has a reason, and when you are dealing with M$ it's usually a cynical reason designed to make you part with yet more of your hard earned either to them or their "partners"

Several good points are brought out, as I disagree with the way you are doing it! Ok could something be up with the timers, blockers and or any other part of a program that has been written to mod your 360? Yes, good chance there is!
Sometimes its the way we say things that can set off a spark! Testers are just that testers! Everytime something new happens, people run and complain. This has been going on for years! I am no newbie when it comes to the world of "testing" and have seen this go on in alot of different "testing" worlds. Black Sunday ring a bell? I think I just gave away my age there, lol.
MS can ban your Xbox live account however cant fry the box why? You own the box, not MS after its paid for! If it were me that was banned, I would buy another box and not do any mods untill it is figured out! Just my opinion, and just that an opinion.

It takes 21 days to form a habit and sometimes a lifetime to break them!

How the hell do I know there is a way to get a console unbanned.. because there is a way, but it involves the console and M$ and a few certain facts about the history of the hardware.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That statement is misleading for a start, yes it involves the console but it does not involve M$ to unban it...hence the hackers scene...

And YES.. they can detect the ixtreme firmware.. like they can detect flashed consoles which have never played a burned game on or offline as soon as they join the system.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

No they can't.

i think xbox and game modding are fun, i think modding games sometimes makes them better and more entertaining instead of just the same old thing everyday just like modding cod mw2 to where you can jump high, run really fast, and even slow. i think microsoft is stupid not all modders play pirated games, i think they should just ban the people with modded dvd drives to play backups, i have a modded xbox and the dvd drive is not modded i still got banned, the xbox is just modded to play emulators for nintendo 64 games, and other classic games. microsoft asumes the worst in everyone. my xbox is banned, and i love my xbox, but i cannot log on xbox live with my modded xbox. i had to buy a new unmodded xbox to continue to play online with my friends and they keep on supending my account for inapropriate content in my bio and motto. all i have in my bio and motto is motto: it's just a game, and in bio: it says how much i love about the xbox 360, and what are my favorite games are to play like mw2. i just cant stand microsoft any more there computers always crash and they have horrible customer support and service.
