Microsoft bans 1 million from Xbox Live?

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 11 Nov 2009 1:49 User comments (48)

Microsoft bans 1 million from Xbox Live? In what would be a stunning figure if proven true, InformationWeek is reporting today that up to 1 million gamers have been banned from Xbox Live in the past two weeks due to playing pirated games using modified consoles.
"All consumers should know that piracy is illegal and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs violates the Xbox Live terms of use, will void their warranty, and result in a ban from Xbox Live," says the Microsoft statement.

Microsoft confirmed the bans but declined to give a specific number instead saying: "We have taken action against a small percentage of consoles have been modified to play pirated game discs. In line with our commitment to combat piracy and support safer and more secure gameplay for the more than 20 million members of our Xbox Live community, we are suspending these modded consoles from Xbox Live."

Certainly 1 million can not be considered a "small percentage," but the software giant may not want the negative publicity of admitting to banning 5 percent of all their paying Xbox Live members.

It is still unclear the exact methods Microsoft uses to detect modified consoles but it appears that "stealth" patching will do you little good. If you want to play games on Xbox Live, you better be buying them.

wonder if it could have anything to do with COD moderm warfare 2, an Xbox version has been floating around torrent sites for just over a week now but it wasnt released until yesterday in stores, anyone playing online would obviously have to have been using a pirate version.

if they are stupid enough to play a game on Xbox live before its even on shelves then they deserve to lose their Xbox live subscription, driving license and right to vote lol

- There were plenty of legit copies of MW2 being bought almost a week before release date. Only speculation as to why peeps are getting banned however there were reports of freshly modded systems getting the axe without ever playing a backup.

I got this info from another site

EDIT* WRONG DAMN INFO!

Xbox360 LIVE Bans Info and iXtreme Online FW WIP
>> Here are some details about the Xbox360 LIVE bans I got directly and indirectly from GaryOPA, Commodore4eva (C4E), Iriez and others. Of course don't take any of this info as 100% confirmed, noone knows exactly based on what data MS is banning ... it's just an analysis of what they think is happening and what MS might/can be checking.

C4E thinks MS is probably detecting and banning consoles from LIVE by tracking usage of backups via timing of the challenge response (c/r) on the drive over the last few weeks or months. A modified FW will reply much faster to the the Challenges requests (stored in a table) than an original firmware (seek on drive). They probably do this test more than once and can ban you if you're above a certain average.
FuzzyLogic also found that microsoft is sometimes doing additional checks on discs: PFI/DMI (so images without these sectors (or if using an old FWs without support for PFI/DMI) can probably be detected easily), drive inquiry (reads ascii string from drive), and capacity (reports capacity of disc) are requested. Strange thing here is MS requests 0x8000 bytes for PFI and DMI, while it should normally be 0x0800 bytes. TheSpecialist pointed out that the remaining 0x7800 bytes contains the relocated SS and PFI on burned discs ... which would make it very easy to detect backups for MS. C4E however told us this would not work on TS drives as its cut off to 0800 even if more data is asked, it's unconfirmed how modified HLG FWs drives respond to this atm.
The "read capacity check" will also work as detection on HLG because, unlike the newest TS FWs, it doesn't have true 'stealth media' yet, these drives are reporting back the burned disc based size of PFI instead of the correct PFI.
Apparently there's also an issue with SS (Security Sector) extracted from Hitachi-LG, some necessary data is screwed ... which means that probably only the Toshiba-Samsung / Kreon setup has been extracting correct SS.

Another thing they are probably detecting (but probably not using yet to decide to ban or not) and log/flag is if you ever booted your Xbox360 with DVD SATA cable not connected to your Xbox360 (E64). Many people did this to power their drive when they wanted to flash it (power connected to 360, SATA to PC). So it's highly suggested to use an external power to flash next time.
It's also possible MS also bans based on stuff like bad credit card info for your country, running a NTSC machine with euro-address/credit card (or inverse), having out-of-region (arcade) games and demos on your HDD, unofficial 360 HDD, internet downloaded gamesaves etc. There's no clear view on all this yet.
For now, C4E believes Microsoft is not detecting modified FWs or detecting FW changes/updates. Using a special FW they did not detect any debug commands sent to the drive by MS (they went through the dash/kernel updates with the special FW as well and did not detect any debug commands there either). So they think either:
A/ MS is not doing any FW detection right now, and only previously (maybe on request of MS servers while playing on LIVE?), or
B/ MS is banning based only on the timings of the drive, ss/pfi/dmi checks, capacity, drive inquiry and c/r verification.

We also got information C4E is working on an "iXtreme Online" FW for Toshiba-Samsung drives, a Hitachi-LG version and maybe even BenQ version might follow later.
The new FW will have less features than the current Xtreme FWs: no single-layer (DVD5) support, no ripping of games (0800 mode), but more features to safely play from burned discs (emulate the exact speed and timings of the original games) and prevent booting from un-safe discs (without PFI and DMI or bad SS - so discs not passing the 'Stealth Check' (using Xbox Backup Creator(info) for example) are not going to boot on the new firmware), or images that aren't exact dumps of the original.
There's no official ETA (maybe this weekend though for TS drives), and of course no guarantee MS will never ban you based on new checks (that's the risk it takes if you want to be part of the modding community ) The HLG FW will take a bit longer as it'll require true 'Stealth media' etc added.

This new FW will of course be made mostly for new consoles being modded, because even if you're not banned from LIVE yet there's no way to know if MS already has info/logs on your console ID regarding timings or other stuff so even changing to this new firmware in the near future may not stop that console ID from being banned in the next wave of MS bans.
If your console is not banned yet, it's highly suggested you don't boot any burned discs, originals should be ok, even when offline (MS might be storing results of some checks in flash), until the release of the new FW.
If your console is already banned this will of course not help you ... just enjoy the offline playing on that console for now (with some games you could try using 3rd party networks like XLink Kai(info)) and maybe some day a new exploit will allow you to do more with that console.

I got popped in the mass ban a few days ago. I have a hitachi drive running ixtreme 1.5. i've been playing on XBL for well over a year. I've never played a game before the release date, i've never even burned one before the release date. I verified every game through abgx before burning and playing. I just think that MS can now detect modified firmware, plain and simple. 1 million, they had to be working on this ban for a long time. I knew the risk when i hacked my box. It's not really a big deal for me not being on xbl, i'd rather play free games anyway.

Wave 4 has little to do with these bans, geestar20. M$ found a way to either read the firmware or read it's behavior. That is how they are banning people. Some have drives flashed and played just regular games and got nailed.

No worries, though. A new patch is in the works and should be able to elude them:D

looking for the xbox to be cracked wide open now. microsoft is sticking their nose in too deep. especially modifying the system to not do certain things after the ban.

My dads 360 got banned n its stoped him from downloading games to the hard drive, lost his gamer score when he puts his gammer tag on a none flashed 360 and wont show up any copyed games or achievments hes played. Allso i went in a game shop today and the guy said theres speculation that when a new origional game like "CODMW2" is played on a flashed 360, the 360 shuts down and is a useless lump of plastick and metal just like when a phone is stolen and you phone up the operator to shut it down. I also have a flashed 360 and cant bare to plug it into a network cable to find out weather they *bleep* my 360 elite up, what needs to be done is to find some 1 who no's whats going on inside microsoft so we cant find a way around this crap. I personally am trying to dig around on the internet to find out whats gone on and hopefully find away round this :-(.

GOOD!

Playing pirate games on consoles is for losers, cheats, hacks and leeches. You wanna play jacked games? Do it on the platform that makes it practical and allows for easy software manipulation.

But seriously...........buying a console with the intent to jump through hoops of fire to play jacked games........those peeps have nothing better to do than to ride the coattails of others.

Can you say "Christmas present" or even better........."Save up and buy"??

Can you say "expensive" or "not released in my region"? Some games aren't released in certain ares. Most are priced too high and in other countries are even more expensive then in the U.S.! There are many legitimate uses for iXtreme. Go read up before you go on your Anti-Pirate-Crusade.

As geestar20 posted, the detection seems to be based on the time takes to read a code from the disk. If you are using disks from other regions, then this you shouldn't get you banned...only if you are using pirated copies or backups should this get you banned.

Personaly, I think this is less about piracy, and more about Microsoft sales. When they ban a unit, both the console and the account are banned. A new 360 costs $300, and a year of Live costs another $60...so every time they ban a loyal customer, they come back and give microsoft another $360. If this was not the case, they would simply fix the issue, rather than letting piracy continue, and banning users from time to time.

Plus, selling more systems makes them appear to have a larger market share. They never removedd the millions of RROD units that they removed from service, nor the units that failed without going back to microsoft. I'm sure they also will not remove the banned units from their official count of xbox360 consoles in use...and this number is a big help when trying to convince a publisher to make a game for a technicaly inferior console that costs more than it's competition...Sony does not have to pay developers $50,000,000 to keep their exclusives exclusive; Microsoft has to spend this much just to keep a couple of DLCs exclusive!

Anyone think M$ is monitoring these forums to see how these mods and flashes are being done? I'm just saying if they banned 1 million people, who's to say they don't have the time or resources to monitor what's being said in these forum threads. Just unplug all your modded consoles from XBL until after the holiday season. Wait the enemy out! Let's see who makes a real profit. Don't buy any games, accessories, points cards, etc and don't log on to XBL. It's like the credit industry, stop using these banks money and they will eventually collapse. From what I've read all you guys seem to be very intelligent, just have patience. We are just the little Davids fighting the conglomerate M$...

I don't play pirated games nor is my 360 modded. But this seems awful big brother to me. Sure, playing pirated games is against their copyright and MS has every right to fight it, but how is simply modding hardware any of MS's freaking business. We bought and paid for it. If I want to put live chickens in it, that's my right.

I have news for MS. This is not going to bode well for some of the legal players either.

I'm borrowing a friends flashed 360 at the mo as my xbox 360 has given up the ghost (RROD)and as i've had it since release i dont think i'll be entitled to a free fix . I dont play copies on it but am wondering can it still be banned. I just bought MW2 and am itching to take it on line. Is it just copied games taken on line thats being picked up on or is it the flashed drive itself?
I have played it in single player but have been signed into live. The game has already had an update (wondered if this was some check to see if it was a legit copy) but as of yet, no horrible message from MS banning the console.
Cheers

LissenUp ,

Do you have kids? Ever have expensive gear broken?

I just bought a few games, I play the origs, my kids play the backups on their 360, they leave the disks on the ground, they use the disks to slide around on the carpet. They ruin the disks. Why in hell would I be forced to go buy another copy of the disk when I can create use backups of my disks?

Buying another console to replace the one that got banned!
Modding it later on because someone says that they have a undetectable hack for it!

2612.11.2009 15:21

I'm curious as to how they "Ban" a console from XBL?

-Ban the MAC ID registered to said console, just as any PC has a NIC and a unique MAC ID so do these XBOX's ... if thats the case its extremely easy to spoof a MAC ID

-Ban the XBL Account (This seems like a no-brainer, sure you lose your e-peen gamerscore but you can just buy a 3mo. card at Wal-Mart)

-Somehow ban the console based on the Hardware you have in it, if this is the case can't you just buy another Xbox-DVD Drive from a 3rd party site?

I can't really find any logic as to how they're banning consoles, I could care less about how they tracked these 1 million peeps - I'd also give it a week or two until we hear about legit unmodded consoles getting banned, just like that fiasco with Vista not too long ago where the Pirates Vista(s) didn't get banned lol.

If your modded xbox was ever connected to the internet, there is a good chance that you broken xbox and gamer tag is banned. Not your friends xbox that you log onto live through. His stuff will be fine.

It's most likely based off of your Console ID # and maybe even Serial ID #. You can find both of those information on the back of your xbox and on the dashboard under "System Info". That's why you can take your HD and put it onto another xbox and not get banned and recover your gamertag on another xbox system.

Ever since the ban happened on 10/30 of this year, I've been saying that M$ probably have been watching these forums, and youtube has people showing how to mod consoles too. So they know all about this stuff, they take it back to their engineers to figure out what is being run, how to hack their own product, and how to trace this hack so they can ban us. We are to blame because we openly discuss so much about it and give information to everyone, and the person on the other end asking how to mod their console are M$ employees themselves or company they hired to track this.

I've been banned on 2 elites since 11/6, but I just bought a arcade at WM on sale for $100 bucks and now I use my elite for backups and the arcade for online. It's not a big deal for me, I can still play both.

Interesting

If they're banning off a Console ID or Serial Number then I wonder if theres any possibility of being able to spoof this in any way?

Kind of like a basic KeyGen or MAC Spoofer

3312.11.2009 22:26

i too have been banned and from what im hearing is that there is something in the works to unban them.......BUT dont you guys it would be a good idea to not to try to post it up on the internet so our good friends at micro$oft pretty much runs all of the computer industry? its like putting an ad on craigslist that you're selling weed or you're growing it. there has to be another way if that person does figure it out to share the wealth. personally right now im saying screw microsoft and xbox. i have find it pretty peculiar that the same week they have the "big ban" they also have the nice deal at walmart for buying a 360 arcade and get a $100 gift card...

3412.11.2009 22:27

Ok I can understand Microsoft's position on piracy. But they got a lot of nerve considering how many people they screwed with their first attempts at the 360. Every person I know who bought one on release had the RROD, and many of them weren't able to get reimbursed even after their "extended warranty". Thankfully I bought a PS3 instead.

3513.11.2009 08:30

If it wasn't about the money, why has M$ not fixed the RROD problem? How much do they make off this every year from people whose console's warranties have ran out and either pay to have it fixed or buy another console?

I agree 100% because if it wasn't about sales, then M$ would have WI-FI built in the new 360's!!! Instead, you have to buy a $100 dollar accessory to get WI-FI! Also, what M$ don't realize if it wasn't for the modded consoles, I, and some others that I personally know, wouldn't of bought an X-BOX in the first place!! We would of stuck with PS3, which has built in WI-FI and free online play!!! Yes, I do have backups because I have a 9,8, and 2 year old in my house!

3713.11.2009 16:18

Hmmmm, I wonder what would happen if those 20 million people never renewed their memberships...hmmmmm

3813.11.2009 17:54

Mmm Conspiracy. First off, you do not need a $300 360 to replace it, just a $200 one, move your HDD over. Second off, the whole crap about the RRoD consoles being removed? WTF. They were repaired and sent back (maybe not to the same owner, but sent back out) there was no NEW consoles sent out and if there was they wouldnt have counted towards NPD's tracking of the consoles sales. The amount of 360 sold and more then likely installed are pretty damn close. Third Sony has paid time after time for exclusives. You can keep thinking Sony is clean, but they aren't. It is the way it goes in the gaming world.

This whole thing has to do with Piracy and console modding. MS makes more on game royalties then they do on the consoles themselves. They lose too much money from pirates. People QQing that they have to pay more for a game, or that they cannot get the game in their regions.. then get a console out of your region and order the games from the web. There is no reason to pirate them. Also the ones that say the majority of people use modded boxes to play backup of games they own. Stop lying, no one believes you. If you do honestly do that, you are in the smallest of precentiles.

I am happy MS finally did something about the cheats and hackers out there. I was sick and tired of having guys cheating in games. (also the reason I do not play PC games online much)

I have 2 children and 150 retail 360 games and 50 retail PS3 games. None are damaged. You need to teach your kids how to take care of things or lose them. All you are teaching them right now is that its okay to steal and that damaging their own property doesn't have repercussions.

To the guy crying about the wireless adapter... do you really play wirelessly? Well, I have my PS3 hardlined and I wish I could hardline my Wii. Wireless tech is still meh for gaming.. it works, but hardline is a better way to go. having kids in your house is no reason legally or otherwise to pirate. try and justify it all you want, its wrong and takes money from the poor bastards who make the games for us.

As for people not getting their 360's fixed or reimbursed for repair of the RRoD... thats a load crap, all you had to do was call and you were taken care of.. unless of course they had cracked their 360's then their warranty was void regardless.

1.) I've got a handful of 360 games that I keep in their cases at all times *gasp what a concept* and while I can understand the whole "I need to backup because the game might break arguement" I still can't understand why people think if bothering to say it on a forum will change anything.

2.) You can do whatever the hell you want with your Xbox, you do however have to follow the rules of their online services. Just as Blizzard was the company you bought Warcraft 3 on they too owned Battle.net - Hence, if you were caught hacking they banned your CD Key forcing you to buy another one and if you pirated the game, the Key you got from a Keygen was auto-rejected from their servers

3.) How come no one's managed to find a fix past this? We've pretty much narrowed it down that they're either banning based on MAC ID/Xbox Serial ID/Something based on the DVD Drive...lets get to it people!

Why aren't you the parent of the century!!! Not everyone believes in beating their kids to teach them how to take care the games!!! And furthermore, not every kid might be their own in the household!! The kids might just be of their significant other and don't feel right punishing them out of respect of their parent and their loved one!!! Because most kids, if they aren't yours, you might as well yell at the wall than correct them!!

Also, if M$ was really worried about piracy, either put key codes that could only be used with the originals, or go blue ray where it cost the same for 2 blank disc as it does for 20 blank dvd dl!!!

I can't really find any logic as to how they're banning consoles, I could care less about how they tracked these 1 million peeps - I'd also give it a week or two until we hear about legit unmodded consoles getting banned, just like that fiasco with Vista not too long ago where the Pirates Vista(s) didn't get banned lol.
lol i always watch these forums and stuff its always interesting seeing people running around wondering how this works etc its even more interesting and fun when u know the answer

so im giving a answer to a question as its a rare question and one most people can never answer

how they ban a xbox

in your xbox is a motherboard as we know with bios and chipsets and cpu and gpu etc on it
in there is a code
a code separating xboxs alike
its the XBL (xbox live) code
cant be changed believe me ive been trying
when u see it
thats what its called
xbox live code #xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
something like that except not so many x's lol
ur xbl code is one of a kind
idk how they set it or where it lives exactly on the motherboard but i do know its there
and as u said serial numbers etc
but i do know how to change those
because i know were they are

and now to answer other questions while im at it

if u read the agreements to your xbox you will find its "illegal" to modify it...true
u agree to these terms when u use the xbox...true
when u purchase em you agree to terms to
such as i will not illegally modify the xbox...also true
so by modding the firmware in your dvd drive thats a illegal modification...true
hot wiring the motherboard to not check the discs originality...also illegal modification
chipping the dvd drive to not check also illegal

but doing that u break the terms of use
something every company does have...terms of use
yes u do buy it and own

but they created it to be used in a specific way
they don't want idiots messing with it

if you created something amazing lets say a xspxz 3000 gaming console
u wouldn't want people modding it they are ruining your hard work...yes ?

i know i wouldn't want idiots messing with it
terms of use they are there for a reason

now just in-case i get asked
how can they tell if its modded
as far as i can tell they just must basically run a hash check against the original dvd firmware against the current

thats just a educated guess idk for true but it would have to be something along those lines to be simple and possible while the xbox works so it aint noticed

what the hell?! Do you run the accounting dept for Bungie or somethin?
Games on PC have always and still do allow for multiple application to different systems. So your gettin on this dudes ass is uncalled for. Once again the only thing that matters is the legal definition of piracy. If you own a real copy and you arent selling your backups it isnt piracy. Period. So go pound that sand up someone else's ass...namely yours.

As for him saying that systems and accounts are banned did u stop to consider that maybe... JUST maybe that was what he experienced. And yes it would be his fault. My point is you obviously just like to stir shit up. Your like those kids i wised up to in school. Intsead of fighting the one i was mad at i ended up turning on those egging it on.
Dont instigate. It pisses everyone off. Maybe you could go and spend that money you normally spend increasing your massively exaggerated 200 plus game collection on some education into the topic of law or better yet some Miss Manners classes. I kid of course knowing full well that you obviously have the money to do whatever you want and then pay someone to fix your mistakes. You're probably the same one crying like a little girl when you get yourself into a tough situation begging for someone to help you even though you pushed the situation to that point. Grow up.

I have a modded xbox 360 that i dont want to get banned from and a normal xbox 360 that is connected to live and i was wondering since there is an option on the modded xbox to save an actual legit game to the hard drive and play it from there, can you save a game on to a hard drive from a modded xbox then transfer the hard drive to an unmodded xbox and play that game? if so would xbox live work?
